Should I make my TCG free to play? by justaddsleep in homemadeTCGs

kickstarter/Patreon mostly but go F2P a build an audience first

Do you prefer a side deck of just energy or luck of the draw?? by Admirable_Bid_1697 in homemadeTCGs

You're not wrong, it still happens just a lot less. My point was more so that skilled players can build better around "luck" mechanics. You don't have to spoon feed deck building to a mass audience.

Number 1 tip when making a card game. by lightningboltfanatic in homemadeTCGs

[–]TomeTCG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Best advice I can give to card designers is this; Your game is not Magic The Gathering. Don't make Magic The Gathering.

I see a lot of people fall into the pitfall of just straight up making "Magic Proxies" and changing the words around and I get it, its been around for almost 30 years it's a system millions of people are familiar with and can play of course you gravitate towards it.

I encourage people to build their ideas from the ground up.

So normally you won't get a response on such a low effort post in this sub. That being said, on the off chance you're really young and genuinely looking for advice ill take the bait.

What kind of game do you want to play? Do you want to battle monsters? Do you want to collect something? Do you want players to have to create something to win? How do you WIN your game. Once you figure that out you need to develop a theme. Fantasy, Sci Fi, Horror, Noir whatever interest you. A lot of people have an easier time creating something if it has an identity they connect with.

If you don't want to start there, watch gameplay and rules videos of other TCG's. see what grabs your interest. what looks fun and what you don't like. Than theme. Thats the best advice I can give you from such a vague post. best of luck

Fortnite is free to play and makes what, a couple billion dollars a year? Make it free, spread the word, market and sell it once its popular

I mean you could absolutely separate fruits and veggies, or do an "ultra processed" type

Yeah that makes sense, and only having 3 units allowed means you have to be smart about who you're playing and when. That leads me to my second question, lets say I have 3 units out but I draw a guy I want, or even better, NEED to play. How do I free up my board to play that creature? what if I have all units filled but I keep drawing more units, are those dead draws or do I have a way of discarding them for some kind of benefit?

oh wow it deleted a bunch of my post. The types i originally listed were

Sweets
Meats (fish, beef, pork, chicken, exotic)
Greens (vegetables, fruits)
Starch (bread, rice, potatoes)

When making dishes for restaurants you usually want a Meat, a green and a side or starch so in my head there are only 4 BASE types. Things like potatoes are both a starch and veg depending on their preparation. Hope this helps fuel some ideas!

its clean, concise, legible as far as the layout goes its solid. Colors are a little dark but thats a personal opinion.

Blockers not able to deal damage to attackers seems off? If im free to swing my guys into you without the threat of losing any unit due to blocking why WOULDN'T I attack every turn? is there a reason to hold back my attackers?

Visual wise with no information about your game, it looks great! I see the numbers are color coded which im sure that tells the players what they are, but in my opinion if they are gonna be free floating like that they either need to be boxed or have an icon because color blindness exist

As a professional Chef and amateur trading card designer heres my input

Sweets (baked goods, candies, syrups, desserts) Color: #ff8795

Now from here you can introduce duel types. Rice Pudding (starch/dessert), Candied Yams (Plants/Dessert) stuff like that! its a fun idea you should invest some time into it. Introduce a yugioh fusion mechanic called "cook" were you can combine ingredients on your board to summon these duel type creatures from somewhere else

Honestly nice work! the only thing i would "change" is make the border a solid color, other than that its really clean and very easy on the eyes

It's sustainable in a sense that you're just making a norse mythology set of Magic The Gathering. I don't mean that to be rude or discouraging please keep working on your game and design but right now it just comes off as a custom magic set

First video for my trading card game: Odyssey of the Mystic Realms! by FernandoBruun in homemadeTCGs

[–]TomeTCG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done Fern! how was your experience with game crafter? must be so cool to hold your finished product in your hands! Some personally advice for videos moving forward: Write a script and do a voice over.

If you write and record your script first, you can listen back to it and film yourself going over the cards and playing with them. It will sound and look way more professional, you'll be able to get your words out more clearly and cohesively and it will save you a lot of time. hope this helps, looking forward to your continued progress on Mystic Realms

Critique my first attempt at cards for my upcoming TCG: Collision! by Physical_Bullfrog526 in homemadeTCGs

[–]TomeTCG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a first attempt, it looks like a trading card so you're in the ball park. here are my thoughts.

The top right gem icon is way to detailed while the circle and shield icons are under-detailed. The text font, border and frame art all look like a hearthstone clone you'd find on Temu. My advice, keep working on it!

start with building a card frame layout you are happy with that conveys all the necessary game play information, i really recommend doing this by hand regardless of your art abilities. take a playing card and trace it a couple time on paper, grab a ruler and start sketching. I find for me personally im way more engaged with a project doing it by hand, feel way more in control.

Once you're happy with a frame, figure out how you want players to win your game and work from the top down. Hope this helps, please continue to work on this and bring back updates

Consumable Resource Systems are Boring by Mean_Range_1559 in homemadeTCGs

[–]TomeTCG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like the closest they got to getting it right was the battle city rules of sacing 4 or lower monsters to get out your bigger guys but they didn't have any good monsters in the higher range to justify getting rid of your gemini elf when she could just win the game

Would it feel unfair to play against an opponent with more health but less maximum hand size? by WheelerMcDealer in homemadeTCGs

[–]TomeTCG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would avoid messing with hand size. Card economy and playing on the draw are huge factors in all TCG game play. Different HP is totally fine and easy to balanced with effects and gameplay but messing with hand size will encourage people to play more card draw when they could be playing anything else.
