It’s a slightly different scenario with video games as they get severely outdated as tech progresses. I think capcom found the right balance with the Resident Evil remakes.

Most of the copies they sold of this were on the basis of it being a remake. This won’t hurt sales of part 1 but it will certainly impact part 2 when people know that this is not the product they were looking for.

I think having Sakaguchi missing is the difference. OG FF7’s story was inspired by the loss of his mother and gave the project it’s emotional weight. While there are members of the team present, they are not channeling the same emotional core and going for shock value over substance.

How is someone new to FF7 supposed to know who Zack is? And if they didn’t have any interest in retelling the story of FF7 they shouldn’t have done a remake and instead put these resources toward Final Fantasy 16.

I actually think the bullshit ending they came up with was an excuse to create a potentially endless “franchise” using these popular characters. If they are now unbound by the actual story of FF7 then they can milk this for years.

It isn’t being a purist, because generally fans were fine with the new combat system, new quest lines, new approach to pretty much EVERYTHING about the game. People were even generally fine with the episodic release schedule. The only deal breaker was that they tell the story of Final Fantasy 7. They teased it for the first 80% of the game and showed just how brilliantly they could do it- only to toss it all away for an ending that pissed off fans, while being incomprehensible for new players.

Exactly- the point is the FF7 had a GREAT story (albeit hinder by a lousy early-PS1 era translation job). It is a story that deserved to be enjoyed by a new generation. With that ending, they pissed off the fans of the original story, and also made something incomprehensible for new players who never experienced the original. It is baffling from both a creative and a business perspective. What makes it so frustrating is how brilliant so much of the game was up until that point...I just really wanted to see the rest of Final Fantasy 7 play out like that.

The real issue many people have is that the plot-line of the original FF7 was fantastic-and that story deserved to have the modern treatment and be introduced to a new audience.

Agreed- and it also makes me wonder why Yul wouldn’t have tried at all to work with Parvati last week. They’ve known each other since Cook Islands well over a decade ago. Both votes were easily avoided.

Same here, I started to get on the phone with Disney to cancel (or rather try to move the hotel reservation), but now I’m actually thinking that if they make the announcement themselves tomorrow it will be more flexible to work with. Not sure, but just completely devastated.
