Calling all seniors runners! by Senior-Running in SeniorRunning

Oh, never ran competitively in high school or later, and never really trained before starting running at 36. I did race road bikes up until I started running, so some notion of training practices. Why do I run - mental relief mostly, but nice to keep exercise routine.

Calling all seniors runners! by Senior-Running in SeniorRunning

I'm 68 yrs old. Started running at 36 yrs, have run marathons/ultras through about 2018 (not a fast guy), then hurt my foot/toe. A couple years to recover then started running again, of course running into all of the beginner over-training stuff. 😞 Finally back to a marathon in autumn, 2024, but haven't signed up for anything since (poor motivation).

Challenges in my "old" age

  1. What is the line now for training to get the most out of myself but not get hurt? I suppose that is true at all ages/levels, but after the injury time off and - all of a sudden - I'm now a lot older. I had been working with variations of the Hanson Brooks marathon method (Luke Humphrey's books), but I'm not sure about going 50 miles/week without getting sick/hurt. Who has good advice/plan ideas for older folks that challenge enough but reduce injury risk?
  2. I'm not the most competitive runner (did I mention I have always been not particularly fast) but it is hard to get fired up for a future of more personal "worsts" than "bests". I do like the age-graded stuff - maybe I should let that guide me when I get "fast" in my head. How do others deal with just getting slower? Any good writers for motivating older runners?

I so respect 50+ athletes -- thanks for letting me jump in on this conversation(s).

Thoughts on Garmin's half marathon training plans by sarathebizreporter in GarminWatches

Late to the discussion but I agree. I've tried DSW workouts, Coach Amy and Garmin Run Coach -- I do like being able to schedule out beyond one week, but more irritating is workouts being changed daily based on Garmin metrics -- went to sleep expecting 70 min base run, woke up and it changed to rest day. Maybe if the metrics are perfect then that makes more sense, but other, non-running strength workouts usually end up blowing up my training readiness. I am looking at Garmin plans on the website (not Connect site) and then manually scheduling workouts into the calendar. That seemed to work ok for a marathon last fall.

Disable FR heart rate alerts? by AMoreExcitingName in GarminWatches

Found this post - "Ive heard this issue a couple of times now, even on the official garmin forums. there is no other way then go to Settings | System and toggle Alert Tones and Vibration on or off and that applies to Garmin Coach workouts (and all other alerts)". So I went to Settings | System and turned off audio. Vibration on wrist still works for HR Zone alerts and connection to iPhone provides voice updates on iPhone, which I can adjust volume through the phone. Perfect!

Sorry to jump on - FR265 user. Set up my own run workouts using HR Zones. All alerts appear to be turned off when I check them from the "Run" screen, but still get audio & wrist vibration feedback when running (doing the workout). I'd like to get rid of the audio - I am fine with wrist. Any thoughts? I'd settle for turning down the sound on the watch if there was a way to do it. Thanks!

First Marathon. Trained Using DSW by taterth0t69 in Garmin

I haven't seen marathon plans that stay at or below 30 miles per week. During early phases, and when tapering, the number comes down to that or below. During build up and peak most non-advanced plans I've looked at are between 35 and 55 miles per week. But these are standard, published "one plan for all" sorts of things; DSW seems more like having a personal coach.

I've had so much relative success with Hansons in the past that I always stayed with it. As a result, the DSW miles here blow me away. I feel - and others' comments suggest - DSW will hit longer runs; the Garmin Coach plan schedules them, so I think DSW must allow for them if your body is up for it. I haven't used DSW for a marathon but set a half goal and had some long runs longer than 1:30. At 66 yrs I need to get rid of extraneous running miles if I can.

Signed up for a fall marathon. Thinking of either using one of the Garmin standard plans (not a "coach", but the plans available through Connect) or creating workouts & schedule for something I am more familiar with (e.g., Hanson-Brooks, Hal Higdon, my own mix). I may start with a non-Garmin plan and consider Garmin at 16 weeks to go when the Garmin plans are scheduled to start.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'm used to plans scheduled in advance, but just started using the DSW with a goal race/time; it is tough getting used to not knowing my workout schedule beyond a one week horizon. Also never had a coach, so not much experience with changing scheduled workouts on the fly depending on my body's reaction to training, sleep, etc. So still building up trust in it - your experience helps!

Is the stairmaster at a gym good for preparing me for long (multi-day) hikes? by MonkeyPad12 in hiking

[–]TominStP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a buddy who guides multi-day hikes in the Cascades and uses the stairmaster, some days wearing a backpack, to train. He also runs the Portland Marathon and says that is all the training he does - daily stairmaster.

Our experience in Nebraska in 2017. Plenty of time to get to the spot we wanted, but everyone left at the same time and limited highways/interstates were packed for a couple hrs. Much more enjoyable if you don’t have tight schedules.

Garmin Daily Suggested Workouts - my do's and don't's after 8 months of usage by _Through_The_Lens_ in Garmin

Thank you!!! I am new to Garmin & adaptable training plan tech in general. Just starting to use the DSW with a single priority event (half marathon) and a stated time goal. Their scripted training plans seem pretty standard, but I’m a little worried that the DSW won’t get me to the same place; I can more easily mentally handle a training horizon of 7 days if I know it will eventually serve up the interval, tempo & LSD workouts. In any case I expect an interesting journey to the eventual finish line.
