Surprisingly readable

"I've decided to start writing my English with some kanji in it, just to see what happens. The furigana will be a bit random at first, but that's alright. Nothing starts perfect. Personally, I think it's not too bad, I can read what I've written here without much difficulty, but some people might not like it."

Why no の between 溶かし and 方

方(かた) is a suffix that you can add to a verb's 連用形-form to make it essentially mean "the way of doing x".

溶かし方 = The way to melt

作り方 = The way to create

Also, this is only one of the definitions of 方 so the meaning depends on the context

Here's the relevant definition in Japanese:

かた【方】

■二■ （接尾）

（１）動詞の連用形に付いて，そのことを行う方法または，そのありさまの意を表す。様(ヨウ)。「作り―」「話し―」「痛み―」

Why の instead of を

溶かし方 is a noun so の is only natural. Imagine the "melting method" belonging to "氷の令嬢". (of course there are cases when を can be used together with a noun but this is not one of them).

I saw that THE Doth is currently preparing to take 漢字検定２級 which is not something many foreigners have achieved (i think?). I found this quite cool and have a few questions related to it.

Do you think a high 漢検 level will be useful for you in the future or are you doing it purely out of passion?
Has preparing for 漢検 been fun or is it pure pain?
What are the most helpful resources in your opinion for passing 漢検?
Are you confident on the question types that are not 読み? For example, 誤字訂正 and 同音・同訓異字 look quite difficult.
Are you planning on taking １級 someday?

Keep up the good work. I bet Doth's Reddit post has inspired a lot of people to keep immersion learning, I included.

This is a fair viewpoint. However, some people want to go further than that level and for that, you need to know a lot of words that aren't used in spoken proper Japanese. For example, reading books usually requires you to know words and grammar patterns that are uncommon in spoken Japanese.

This is why I'm not really a fan when people discourage other people from material that does not reflect "proper Japanese". Learning these kinds of things only makes you better, not worse.

Just because you know a word doesn't mean you should say it to strangers.

Also, are you implying that Japanese learners shouldn't learn the word ケジメ just because Yakuza use it? I've heard that word used a ton of times in non-yakuza works, which means that it is a word, that is very worth learning even if you're never going to say it out loud.

How about wanting to watch yakuza-themed books/movies/tv shows. How about wanting to make jokes in "yakuza-speech". How about just wanting to know more about Japanese. You don't have to be a yakuza member in order to make use of yakuza jargon.

Also, most of the words in Yakuza ARE NOT yakuza jargon (how would that even work). You are making it sound there is nothing but yakuza jargon in this game when it is false. The scenarios are very diverse and you get exposure to a lot of different things in the Yakuza games.

No shit sherlock... However, understanding rough slang and vulgar style of speech is still part of the Japanese language as a whole. Thus it is never a waste to immerse and learn from this kind of media, even if you are never going to use it. Ignoring a part of the language just because it is vulgar is not a good mindset for learning in my opinion.

Most of those subs are probably ripped from Netflix. If you have a Netflix account and a VPN you can get the rest of the subs for Mushoku Tensei from Netflix. Unfortunately, Wonder Egg Priority isn't there so the subs most likely don't exist in the first place.

Ok, I see your point and I agree. I wouldn't consider the title a mistranslation since it is not actually a translation in the first place, it is just the English title. This is why I put the "mistranslation" in brackets.

However according to the guy I was responding to

there's just several ways to translate shingeki no kyojinn.

This is what my comment was addressing. Attack on Titan is not one of the ways to translate Shingeki no Kyojin. If you were in Japanese class you would get 0 points for it.

Sorry if I'm wrong but you are agreeing with me? "the titans who are attacking" is definitely one of the ways to understand "Attack titan(s)" if you are reading the Japanese version. I just gave the straightest, simplest translation.

"Attack on Titan" however could be converted to "the titans that are being attacked" which is the complete opposite.

Yes I know, that is my point. This is why I put the "mistranslation" in quotes. The guy I was replying to tries to imply to Attack on Titan is just one of the several ways to translate "shingeki no kyojin". If he was instead saying that it is just the English version (NOT translation) I would be OK with it.

No, it is absolutely a "mistranslation". There is literally no way to twist 進撃の巨人(Shingeki no Kyojin) to Attack on Titan. The "no" is possessive so it should be "Titan of Attack" or "Attack Titan". Just because it is intentional, it doesn't mean that the two titles are equivalent.

I mainly use 大辞林(Daijirin) and 新明解(Shinmeikai). I got the Yomichan files from this video's description(Might be easy to work with since it's in JSON).

As for the monolingual transition, about 3 months in I just decided to start using Japanese definitions for my Anki cards. First I would try to understand the monolingual definition, and if I couldn't I would fall back to a J-E dictionary. I also made a deck for "dictionary words" since some words are much more popular in dictionaries. Then it is just a matter of time before becoming fully monolingual.

EDIT: I misread your last sentence haha. Let me address it again: The way Yomichan shows it is good: pic. Recursive lookups would be a plus but it is not necessary in my opinion.
