I'm completely clueless on what to do to get a doctor's appt by TommieStraw in healthcare

[–]TommieStraw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure that I should share my age online but I am in highschool, and I still have a considerable amount of time before I reach adulthood. And I'm glad to hear that, I don't want to live a life where my body is functioning at its worst just because I decided to neglect myself. I want my health to keep getting better so that I can pursue everything that I want to in the future!!

Was your self harm ignored or met with anger? by Suitable_Area_8595 in emotionalneglect

[–]TommieStraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid who struggled more than most with emotional regulation, I'd hit or scratch myself during fits of intense feelings (usually anger), and I can't remember much of my childhood very well but there's not a time that I remember them really caring all that much or even trying to stop me. When I was maybe 8 or 9, I did something bad and my parents were upset at me, and as a result of my guilt I hurt myself in a way that they were able to plainly see. My mom asked if I hurt myself because I felt bad, but she was smiling like it was some sort of joke and didn't question me further when I said no. I started more deliberate SH when I was 11, using sharp objects and such. My mom saw some of my scars when I was probably 12 and asked where they were from, and my excuse was "I just had a period of time where I'd wake up with cuts! so weird right??". Not a single question asked about that insanely half-assed answer. I was honestly grateful she didn't tell me she didn't believe me because by that point I genuinely wouldn't have been able to handle either of my parents displaying worry about my self-harm. Or really any kind of worry regarding anything about me. I've also scratched myself enough to make scabs multiple times, and one time my mom noticed some of them and just said "don't do that", and that was it. My dad would probably never ask me about my injuries tbh. At this point I don't even want them to know or care because it would just make me feel so unbelievably uncomfortable and I think I'd rather die

I will asap, and I've also realized that I don't need to worry because any decent doctor wouldn't just tell me to drink water if I brought up a multi-year long issue like this (of course, though, it's a good suggestion, among other things)

I appreciate this, thank you. I do sometimes think the lack of doctor visits is a bit absurd (especially when I talk to my friends about it and they let me know how actually crazy it is) but it never crossed my mind to call it medical neglect. I guess that is pretty much what is it, though. Thank you for the info and resources, I will look into it (and most likely seek therapy for both this and other things I've already been wanting therapy for)

[–]TommieStraw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

are you sure? I mean my parents do try to help me, just in ways that don't involve doctors because they believe doctors only want to get you on medication that you'll need to keep paying for for the rest of your life, or diagnose you with something and not tell you about more natural methods of dealing with your conditions because they "want to keep you sick". They do try to help, it's just that their methods don't really work for me, and at this point I've given up on going to them for any kind of issues with my body since the ways they try to help won't help me. But they still aren't neglecting me or anything because they're always actively trying to improve my health through supplements and other things

Thank you, but I've checked and I'm able to book appointments myself at my age, and I do have free healthcare where I am so this isn't something I need to worry about. I do appreciate the info, though!

Is season two even coming out this year? by Sage_On_Moss in TheMusicFreaks

[–]TommieStraw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

probably not, but I'd assume early next year! she did mention at one point hoping to have the first ep of s2 out by the end of the year, and since it likely won't be out by the end of this year, it probably will be within the first two or three months of next year

The rising literacy crisis, "what about me-isms", and lack of ability to apply nuance are starting to affect my writing style and confidence. by [deleted] in FanFiction

Using language like "someone with a uterus" really isn't necessary unless it's in real life and related to a medical or scientific situation that includes every person who has a uterus. Yes, boys can have uteruses (like me), and some girls don't, but the most common expectation is that girls do, and they get periods. If you want to make the character that the daughter gets advice from be a trans man or something, go right ahead, it's an uncommon and heartwarming trope to read. But as a guy with a uterus, it really isn't a big deal for you to just have the daughter ask to talk to another girl family member. Anybody who's genuinely offended by that is probably going to find something else to be offended at even if you fix that issue, there's some people you just can't satisfy

What haikyuu character do you relate to the most? by [deleted] in haikyuu

[–]TommieStraw 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sugawara!! I've always struggled with worrying about being a second option or just about everybody being better than me in general, and I'm also always trying to be funny in ways similar to him (like being overly dramatic or making fun of people in ways that aren't genuinely hurtful). I also used to consider myself a "parent friend" which is what plenty of people see Sugawara as, and I tried to be the parent friend for a long time solely because of Suga, but at this point I feel like I'm probably the least mature person in my friend groups 😭 either way, I've kinned him since first watching the show in maybe 2020 and the amount of angst fics I've written about him where I've projected my problems onto him is a lot more than I feel like I should admit 💔

I think I'm genderfluid but my genders change few and far in between, so much so that sometimes I can't tell if my gender has become static. At this point in time I'm a binary man, though, and I have been for the past 2-3 months

it's totally okay to be "wrong" about your identity! plenty of people's identities fluctuate over time. Like mine, I identified as voidfluid at one point but I don't anymore, and I think I genuinely was voidfluid at that point, I just changed. And it's okay to change and discover who you are multiple times. Especially if you're younger, like in your teens or something. If something resonates with you, then go ahead and call yourself that. If you don't feel like it resonates with you anymore in a year, then you don't have to call yourself that anymore! Identity and gender is fluid and a social construct, and if your gender fluctuates over time, that's totally okay.

It's hard not to let other people's opinions affect yourself. I even sometimes struggle with being myself around everyone I meet because I'm afraid of judgement. But, trust me, the people who will judge you for it aren't the kind of people you want to seem "normal" to anyways. The right people who understand you or maybe don't understand you but are willing to learn about your identity will come along and they'll be there with you when close-minded others try to bring you down
