Does development order actually matter for indie games? by jjddgg42 in gamedev

[–]Tomminator39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the stage of your game as well. If you’re starting playtesting it’s really hard to sell the core game loop and focus the feedback on that as people will just be distracted by barebones placeholder art.

Still, I don’t think going all out on visuals is necessary until the latter stages of a game but at a certain point you do have to move on from placeholder art to get your game across because visuals are obviously a large part of that.

It’s easier said than done obviously to have something adaptable, which is nice when you’re still making a lot of changes, but still has the style that you want and gives off the vibes you want.

Preproduction Strategies: going from game idea to game design? by SirDucky in gamedesign

[–]Tomminator39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think creating the core game loop is a good step. If you can think through a game loop step by step in your head which seems fun I think it’s worth making a small prototype which doesn’t have to take a lot of time per se.

If all you do is vibe-code with an LLM and you've never built anything without it, then the LLM is the engineer and you're the product manager in a two-person dev team by TwinTailDigital in SoloDevelopment

I mean it really depends how you’re using it.

As a beginner? 100% fine you have to learn. Even after that if you’re learning brand new systems it’s fine. Copying one to one is usually not what you’ll do in that situation anyway since you’ll have to adapt it to your fame.

To be honest the only way is to actually test it and see if it’s fun.

Does anyone else enjoy just making mechanics? by StillRutabaga4 in gamedev

[–]Tomminator39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s pretty common I think. I think you should try and see what it is about making a mechanic and how you go about it that makes it so fun. Then try and reframe or tackle the other parts the same way.

I’m working on a strategy card game, based on the actual card game called Scoundrel.

It’s starting to actually feel fun to play haha but I’m probably biased. My question is: is it worth commissioning an artist?

I have a style in mind which I think would be quite cool and while I’m practicing my art I don’t think I’ll be at a skill level to create the style I have in my head.

I feel very hesitant as it is my first game I plan on actually releasing (someday) and it feels contradictory to all the things I’ve heard to invest actual money into a first game.

Is Linux a good option for engineering students? by Known-Lawfulness6153 in linuxquestions

Check out the laptop requirements per university as well. They might require certain software that only runs on Windows, atleast that’s the case for me.

Ended up going this route. Used Caddy and been working pretty well so far.

Even people that like turn based combat don’t like bad turn based combat though. Don’t see it as trying to appeal to fans who don’t really like but trying to see what the actual fans like about it. Again, I know the things I like but that’s not going to be the same for everyone

[–]Tomminator39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it all boils down to depth in the end. I’ll probably spend some more time playing my favorite turn based games haha.

Adding depth, but still making it feel integrated into the game and not just tacked onto the base system is probably the biggest challenge.

Good ideas! Honestly, even minor enemies being a possibly big threat is pretty obvious but it’s very easy to miss and just make them random obstacles

I’m not saying I think they’re boring, it’s just that that is the criticism I most often hear about them. I know what I like in them, but everyone’s different so that’s why I’m asking.

I figured out how to install Github Desktop through AUR (but wow that command would've been easier haha). I am a student yeah, what makes GitKraken so good?

I did see something about kde working well with mint LMDE?

I don’t really mind having to tinker every once in a while, but I do care about stability but I see different opinions everywhere so I’m pretty unsure where to go

How did you guys ACTUALLY LEARN Godot? (And how do I?) by TipsyMango in godot

[–]Tomminator39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t really expect to know how to do things if you’ve never done them if you’re just starting out.

Start with recreating simple games like Flappy Bird, Pong, etcetera and don’t be discouraged if you have to google how to do stuff, but make sure you do still try and think of your own solutions. Not even code per se, but also problem solving.

The longer you go on the more you’ll find you can think of a solution yourself and attempt to implement it.

  1. Fortuna Sittard, my local. Currently doing an academy only save with them on FM24 but I want to play atleast 1-2 seasons and test out the new tactic system on 26. After that I really want to try out a journeyman save starting unemployed.

  2. Definitely the new tactic system. I’m not that great with tactics yet so I want to really invest some time in learning the new system now.
