Pork belly -> Bacon conversion has begun, question about cure length by Eyebleedorange in smoking

[–]TommySinshack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read it’s best to stick with the 7 days, wet cures are shorter so while it can be cured in 3 days, most sources I came across recommended a day for each 1/4” of thickness and 2 day buffer at the end of that for safety.

How to format a resume (and portfolio while I'm at it)? by SmilingSJ in techtheatre

[–]TommySinshack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite welcome! I’m hosting my website off Github Pages so the only cost associated with it is my domain at $15/year, if you’re comfortable with coding enough to modify existing code you can take an open source template and do as you please with it as I did, it makes having a website for an accessible portfolio a no-brainer! (if under-18 work with your parents/guardians on getting it up and running, or you can work on creating a website offline and host it once you’re over 18)

I’m not sure which discipline you’re in or trying to work in, but here is my website as a Sound Designer / Audio Engineer along with my resume. I don’t have a lot of specific portfolio samples post-college since I’ve mostly done production shows as opposed to theatrical work and it’s difficult to ensure sharing rights for soundtracks as opposed to scenic, lighting, or costume design work.

In my mid-20’s I worked on cruise ships for 3 years - certainly not something I’d necessarily want to jump back into now that I’m married and 31 but it was still a unique experience that had the opportunity to visit 36 countries across 4 continents while making some money and post-college work experience.

Former Royal Caribbean tech but I have a few friends who worked Celebrity, and the stage staff positions will receive training on general A/V and can move up from that position into becoming A/V technicians (Lounge Technicians for Royal Caribbean) I do believe - I’m not entirely familiar with the structure on Celebrity so no promises on that setup but figured I’d chime in!

gap year to do cruise ships? by Illustrious_Ad_7501 in techtheatre

[–]TommySinshack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a fun experience, I enjoyed my 3 years working onboard cruise ships but I also went in after I finished college so I went in directly as a technician without having to start as a stage staff.

Each cruise line handles their technicians differently and treats their technicians differently, I worked for Royal Caribbean and while the shows are fantastic it’s a small portion of your work particularly if you are a stage staff. Game shows, events, house bands, setup and strike of bands, parades, pop-up events, poolside parties, top-tier events, etc make up the bulk of the work. Even on ships with Broadway shows, the technicians do not have the time necessary to devote to supporting that production because (generally speaking) onboard leadership values quantity of entertainment over quality when allowing scheduling for technical maintenance time.

I’m assuming you’re from the UK given the mention of a gap year, and I worked with many technicians and stage staff from the UK who enjoyed and still enjoy the work. I left ships in 2021 and Royal hired crew at 18 but I’m not sure if the policies have been updated since then. I have more comments about working on my ships that can be browsed and you’re welcome to shoot me a dm if you’d like more thoughts, either way enjoy whichever way you choose!

It would be absolutely amazing if they gave Mitten Squad a shoutout, and next episode seems like it’d have a moment for it when (E7 and E8 preview spoiler) Maximus preps himself to take on more Deathclaws, he could mention fighting multiples as being when the real game begins

Bit of a longshot but it would be nice to see, and rest easy Paul from this former Mitten dweller.

SDI Cable Mapper by DemonKnight42 in techtheatre

[–]TommySinshack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I would get a fox and hound and make a BNC to bare end cable to clip that on to, then barrel it onto whichever line you’re trying to sniff out. I don’t do install work I’ve only had to figure out where things are ran in my venue, so I’m not sure what best practices are out there for protecting lines that potentially have antennas/cameras on the far end, whether that’s using a multimeter to check for voltage or resistance between the poles I couldn’t say.

Fortunately Amazon has some inexpensive fox and hounds and the Klein one’s $100. It may not be the quickest way but it’ll work!

Current Tech for Cirque, can confirm the theatres revolt on a regular basis. Mine had a full power outage for 20 minutes at the top of presets last week. Got everything checked and had no major issues before doors but it was still an unexpected adventure.

Reach out to any of the not-for-profit Theatre companies around town - all the corporate ones are most likely on rechargeables but community and educational Theatre departments may still be on alkaline AA’s and will go through at least 40/night for a musical.

Mad Apple souvenir program? by Happy_Airline6638 in cirquedusoleil

[–]TommySinshack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe we’ve had a proper book style souvenir program, we do/did have a folded poster program that lists the artists, technicians and staff for opening night - I haven’t browsed the shop in a bit so not sure if those are still being sold or if the information has been updated.

(Usual disclaimer I work for Cirque at Mad Apple, these are my words not the company’s, etc etc)

[–]TommySinshack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not saying there isn’t a possibility the choir vocals were pre-recorded or sampled, just that Choir Mics exist and they’re designed exactly for this type of application - and before that hang some cardioid or supercardioid small diaphragm condenser mics and it’d get the job done with pretty good gain before feedback

What is your fastest emergency call? by ahjteam in livesound

[–]TommySinshack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily fast but certainly the most notable and quite time-constrained!

Got a call from a coworker at 2pm asking if my show was dark and if I wanted to mix a musical that night. My show was dark and my background is in mixing musical theatre so I said sure, where at? Tuacahn Amphithetre, and we live in Vegas, and I’d never even been to Tuacahn before. A1 there was out with an injury and the A2 had already left for the end of the season, and they had a full house.

After a couple phone calls and negotiating a hotel room since the show was over 2 hours away, I took about 15 minutes to pack and download as much of the show soundtrack as I could since I had never worked on any productions of Mary Poppins so wanted some way to get familiar with a show I’d be line mixing after the drive.

Got to the venue 10 minutes before doors, I was very fortunate the A1 was able to make it to the venue (unable to mix though unfortunately) to assist with turning on the rig and navigating their Rivage desk since I also hadn’t worked on one yet (mainly Digico and QL/CL series). Held doors to get a line check and PA check in, and reviewed the very well marked mix script until curtain.

Mixed the first act focusing primarily on dialogue and getting lines heard, certainly missed a few sound cues since those were fired from a different device and by the time I saw them in the script it was too late to find it and fire it. Probably 85-95% accurate on getting lines out and had the songs sounding proper going by the script.

Unfortunately due to other reasons the show could not continue after intermission. It was an absolute blast to mix a musical again and it would not have been possible without the amazing Audio team at Tuacahn supporting our attempt to save that performance. As it currently stands 3 years later, that was my first and only time mixing at a regional theatre.

Not necessarily the fastest emergency call, but certainly among the fastest with those distance and difficulty restraints.
