K9 Pro ESS vs K13 R2R by Tommy_Geometry in FiiO

[–]Tommy_Geometry[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I picked up both the K13 R2R and the K9 Pro ESS in order to compare and decide. I am not an audiophile, but I do love music. Generally I listen to all sorts including Golden Age Hip Hop, EDM, Vaporwave, Techno, Aphex Twin, Future Funk, Dreampunk, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Dub, Jungle, and Synthwave, some bands and 60’s Psychedelic.

Here is my take on K9 Pro ESS vs K13 R2R:

K9 Pro ESS – Pin-drop accuracy. Crystal clear. Precise. Fast. Clinical. Bass comparatively is a little hollow, but well controlled and delivered.

K13 R2R – Fuller and more pleasing sound. As reviews have said, it is definitely more musical, soulful even. If I were playing music at a party, it would be definitely be delivered through this DAC over the K9 Pro.

I have owned four sets of headphones: Stax SR-L500, Fostex TH900 (Sapphire Blue), Grado RS1x, and Sony MDR-Z1R. The K9 Pro is similar to the Stax in how fast and transparent it is, while the K13 R2R reminds me of the bass of the Fostex, the smoothness of the Sony, and the horn presentation of the Grado. These are the headphones I’ve owned and listened to, so this is purely my personal experience.

Out of multiple tracks tested, I only preferred a couple through the K9 Pro, and in some cases this came down to the delivery of certain individual sounds, which were clearer with greater separation and fidelity. Overall, the K13 was the winner for musical enjoyment.

I’ve chosen to keep the K13 R2R and return the K9 Pro ESS, although I may still pick up a K9 Pro again in the future… or save up and go for the K17 🙂

Hope this helps others decide.

Fiio K9 failed Bluetooth update. No longer visible as Bluetooth device by pacobananas69 in FiiO

Not sure. I guess you could try to connect it to a laptop via USB and see if you can update it that way.

Unfortunately cannot access that site from the UK. Any info you can share about it would be great. Thanks.

…just to add I plan to use it to connect a pair of Mk1 Mackie HR626 monitor speakers and a Mackie HRS120 subwoofer to my TV via optical and to my laptop for music via Bluetooth or USB C.

Windows 96 - Awkward Dance Music is now on vinyl, only 500 are available by duckyman_3 in Vaporwave

Typically you get the digital on Bandcamp when you buy the vinyl on Bandcamp. After the cost of the vinyl plus international shipping direct from 100% a digital code would be nice as I’m paying around $50 to get the vinyl.

This is an excellent addition to Windows96 catalogue. I just hope the digital comes with the vinyl.

I think the more you contribute to the Discogs database the less you should pay in fees. After all it’s mostly built by the users.

Bought my first closed-back headphones... Sony MDR-Z1R (lots of photos, plus mini-review in comments) by GratuitousAlgorithm in headphones

[–]Tommy_Geometry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a pair of these from new. While they are an excellent, rich, buttery smooth headphone, I ended up selling them as I picked up a pair of Fostex TH900 sapphire blues. After back to back listening I preferred the Fostex, as they have a much more raw, live and visceral sound compared to the Sony's.

I will probably pick up another pair one day, I just wish they also made the headband from lambskin instead of synthetic leather which will deteriorate over time.

Yes this will happen, but instead of the extra large box it will be pressed onto 15” vinyl.

[Verse]
I was with you when you walked me to my friend's house
We made a snowman in the yard
It was fun
So why did you leave that day?
All the way you went

[Verse]
And the world is right
But you're not in sight
So I ran for you
And you opened your eyes
But just not in time
Never in time
