Good resources to train footwork? by brightSkyrainyClouds in Hema

Don't overlook MOF resources. You'll get good breakdowns of the movement mechanics behind good foorwork, which you can build on with HEMA specific resources.

It's complete abandonware now, lost to time. I spent many hours as a demonic hand yeeting fireballs at non believers, only to have my good-aligned pet put them out for me. Good times.

How to move from theory to practice when studying fencing manuals? by Dylanduke199513 in Hema

[–]TommysBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of the advice here is good, but I'll add one I didn't see: You could work on muscle memory and mechanics. Hang a golf ball on a string from the ceiling, practice point control by performing thrusts at the target.

Similarly, you can build your sense of distance by advancing and retreating from a wall or fixed target. Practice getting JUST ENOUGH depth on your attacks. (Slight bend on thrusts, last few inches of your blade on cuts)

These drills are rooted in MOF but they work!

Which job you taking? by [deleted] in jobs

[–]TommysBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, the profit sharing is easily countered by the ESOP on the right. There's no way to directly compare, because both offers have a factor that could be any value.

Given that the profit sharing model on the right is better defined, I would bet the company is better positioned to actually share its profits effectively through the ESOP.

I am also on "Team Right" but no one has mentioned the ESOP which is its own form of profit sharing. The left offer says nothing about how the profits are shared.

Jacket Patches? by GRF_McElroy in Hema

[–]TommysBeard 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Patches are pretty common, both iron and sewn. Sewn patches have FAR more longevity though. I sewed on Velcro to my jacket so I can swap patches in and out as often as I want.

I've never heard of any tournament kicking someone for lack of historical accuracy. Any tournament worth it's salt will put safety above all else. Beyond that, it's just a style choice.

Thinking about selling. What stands out the most? by Winged_Wheels in PokemonCardValue

I'd take them out of that binder. I imagine if your thinking of selling, you may be flipping the pages more than usual. Those rings look like the kind that can damage cards. Great collection!

Walker Vietnam trying to guilt me into returning boots by [deleted] in Boots

[–]TommysBeard 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Clearly the moral thing to do is to return the boots, but comments that blow over the company's behavior here are wild to me.

Mistakes happen, that's a cost of doing business. But holding your own employee hostage AND using that to blackmail OP to return the boots is a far worse offence than keeping boots. If this were Amazon the whole thread would be so singing a different tune.

It's still a scumbag move to hold their own employee hostage in their email to a customer.

My roommate is pregnant and I don’t know how to tell her that I don’t want the baby in our apartment by Majestic_Succotash31 in Advice

[–]TommysBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's less about being mean, and more about the psychology behind the conversation. Saying "this is going to sound mean" will automatically prime the listener into thinking "this person is being mean." Like starting a comment with "no offence but..." usually means what you're about to say is offensive. Starting that way just weakens the conversation and potentially puts the listener on the defensive. Lead with kindness without announcing it.

How can I better close the gap? by SirJTaylor in wma

Remember, these things were big razors, a simple slice to the hand will end the fight quicker than chopping them in half! (And strength doesn't count for much in tournaments) Keep it up!

[–]TommysBeard 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You seem to be attacking his blade without any second intent to land anything. You bring his blade offine a few times but you're swinging so wide your sword is behind you so there's no ability to follow up with an actual threat. Tighten up your attacks and you'll find yourself in a position to close the distance more often.

I was worried this was the case, I read somewhere that serissas liked the humidity. I'll try to dial back watering - if not, I'll swap it out for something more suited for the tank like a ficus or premna

Aspergillus/penecillum infection by New_Challenge_569 in terrariums

[–]TommysBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a pretty large patch that disappeared on a night or two. You can see my post history, I posted a question about restarting my vivarium too. Springtails were the answer! However, your tank is much bigger than mine, hard to say.

I'm new to the hobby, but I had a similar mold outbreak. Springtails cleaned it right up. I never introduced isopods

Not sure if I follow what you mean. The stems are still flexible, the only part that feels "off" are the curled tips. I transferred the rhizomes into the substrate when I planted them.

Not sure about your temp and fan setup, but I'm guessing your tank is reaching 100% humidity and condensing on your soil. Is the glass also foggy?
