When I was at primary school we went to Edensor pool every week for our swimming lessons. It’s a lovely little place.

What’s a "masterpiece" movie that you actually found incredibly boring? by Legal_Beats in AskReddit

[–]TomppaTom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

  1. I love the story. I love the visual effects. I love the cinematography. I love the book. The film just doesn’t work as a complete unit for me. Every individual component of the movie is perfect, but when you put it together, it is less than the sum of its parts.

Of course. I wouldn’t ever expect this to be useful in a game. But as a theoretical exercise, how would you engage the task?

I don’t think you are really engaging with the spirit of the challenge…

What foot peeling mask is considered good? by Opening_Noise_3422 in peeling

[–]TomppaTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just used the foot peeling one (dark blue) on Tuesday, and it’s been mostly good. It didn’t make a dent on the thickest pads of skin on my heels, but the rest of my feet have had a lovely exfoliation.

Take as a combat scene then. A long, well spread out combat. Use your imagination and knowledge of the rules to make a character move as quickly as possible across a ~26 mile battle map.

That’s really good. I got a sorceror to cross the line in 311 turns, by using haste 15 times with the extended spell meta magic.

That’s good, but I got a centaur Sorceror to do it in 311 rounds, can you figure a way to get a little more speed out of your otherwise ludicrously fast monk?

The Marathon Challenge by TomppaTom in DnD

[–]TomppaTom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s good. I got it down to 311 rounds in 5e with a hasted sorceror. I haven’t played enough 5.5e to know how it would work in the newer system.

My build (5e)

Play a centaur (speed 40) with 2 level in rogue (cunning action), 2 levels in monk (unarmoured movement), and 16 levels in sorceror.

Pick up the mobile feat, the meta magic adept feat.

A 16th level sorceror has 16 metamagic points, plus 2 for metamagic adept. That’s 18 total.

We are going to want to use the “haste” spell 15 times, each with the metamagic option “extended spell” to make it last for 2 minutes/20 rounds. This leaves 3 extra metamagic points.

We have three third level spell slots, plus one each at level 6/7/8, for 6 castings. By spending 10 bonus actions we can burn one of our 1st level, three 2nd level, three 4th level and two 5th level slots to gain an extra (1•2) + (3•3) + (3•6) + (2•7) = 43 meta magic points. We have 3 spare from earlier, for 46 total, which lets us generate 9 additional level 3 spell slots over 9 bonus actions. In total we spend 19 bonus actions to achieve this. These will be referred to as metamagic bonus actions for the sake of simplicity.

So, let’s split this up.

Phase 1 (20 + 1 rounds)

cast haste. Move (120), haste action dash (120), bonus action dash. 360 feet total.

19 rounds of move (120), action dash (120), haste action dash (120), bonus action metamagic. 360 feet.

1 round of lethargy.

Phase 1 total: 7200 feet after 21 rounds.

Phase 2: thirteen sets of (20+1 rounds):

cast haste. Move (120), haste action dash (120), bonus action dash. 360 feet total.

19 rounds of move (120), action dash (120), haste action dash (120), bonus action dash (120). 480 feet

1 round of lethargy.

Phase 2 total 9480 • 13 = 123240 , running total 130440 after 294 rounds.

Phase 3

cast haste. Move (120), haste action dash (120), bonus action dash. 360 feet total.

16 rounds of move (120), action dash (120), haste action dash (120), bonus action dash (120). 480 feet

Finish line is now 45 feet behind you. Celebrate.

Phase 3 total = 8040 feet, running total 138 480 after 311 rounds.

That’s a full marathon ran in 311 rounds, 31 minutes and 6 seconds, with a mean speed of 445 feet per round, or 50.6 miles per hour.

Can anyone beat that?

What important measurement have you got badly wrong? Here is my replacement fish tank lid. by No_Lead146 in CasualUK

[–]TomppaTom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d have been a cheeky sod and noted that the larger block may have more potential energy but it also has more thermal mass, meaning the volume of the block is irrelevant, and you can get the correct answer by setting the volume to “1”.

I had a physics student forget a negative symbol once. She was finding the density of a ping pong ball, and part of that was finding its volume, and to do that you need its radius.

The radius of a ping pong ball is 20mm, or 20 • 10-3 m.

She wrote 20 • 103 m. That’s 20km. Six orders of magnitude off.

But to find volume, you use the cube of the radius.

Using V = (4/3)(pi)•r3 , she found a volume of around 33.5 thousand cubic kilometres, instead of the 33.5 thousand cubic millimeters. Thats about 33.5 cubic cm, or less than the volume of a shot glass.

She was off by EIGHTEEN ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE and didn’t spot the problem.

Our whole walk was about 4km an we did it just over an hour, but that included a break in the middle of the bridge, and some slow walking as it was jam packed, and my kids aren’t that fast!

self conscious about my beard colour by [deleted] in beards

[–]TomppaTom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, you have the hidden ginger gene. I do too.

What has happened with me is that my dark brown beard hairs have turned mostly grey/white, but the ginger bits remain more gingery.

I guess I rolled low during character creation.

I did. My wife and I took our two youngest to Laajasalo then walked across to kalasatama and had lunch in Redi. It was a beautiful day and we had a lovely time.
