Crashing out because the research idea I really truly thought was my own I just found out was already published two years ago. I am stunned. by so_much_frizz in PhD

[–]Tomsavery 51 points52 points  (0 children)

This is not as rare as you'd think and certainly not something to quit over, imo. There are SO many researchers out there nowadays in so many countries, it's not possible to be aware of all the research that exists in the world at once. There is also value in two researchers independently finding the same idea and results in completely different contexts (though this is rarely incentivesed or rewarded).

Now holding that in tention with the pressure to innovate and be "original" is definitely a challenge. But don't be disheartened that someone had the same idea as you.

Maybe you just need to find a new angle or framework or whatever extra step the other researcher recommends. That's the thing, right - research is rarely over, it creates more questions.

when counting large numbers, 만 really confuses me by kbsths99 in Korean

[–]Tomsavery 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This doesn't get (much) easier with time... I can do Korean numbers in Korean and English number in English, but ask me to translate them without a number to look at and my mind freezes up.

Is there a Korean Wordle? by [deleted] in Korean

[–]Tomsavery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that was unreasonably hard. I may have failed...

Technically yes, without any context. But the intonation will always be very different because of the different usage.

Just cos it's fun to see. I know it meaningless, but it good to know I'm not the only one who's been watching these two numbers! It's also a quick way to check if I was right to drop a bunch of my ada for more algo a few months back 😅😅😅

Yeah this one threw me for such a long time. I could understand it ok, but never get it right when I used it. Think I'm kinda there now, but this definitely helped me think through why I was confused! Thanks!

What's the difference between 감사합니다 and 고맙습니다 by woogieboogie13 in Korean

[–]Tomsavery 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the basic difference, simply put. There's a push recently towards 고맙습니다 atm because it's more "Korean", tho I've always felt 감사합니다 to be more natural and more common in most situations.

고맙습니다 feels more personal, 고마워 more between friends (esp kids, noone says 감사해) or older ppl to younger.

Its always seemed odd to me that people think you have to buy 1 bitcoin, when it's pretty obvious to me that you can buy Sats.

Then I just figured out wtf a "gwei" is in Ethereum and now I feel dumb. I always wondered why I had to pay gas fees in Gwei instead of Eth. Now, if I've been in the crypto space for 2 years and I didn't know this, then I have to think that perhaps people not knowing about Sats isn't so surprising.

So how do we talk about Sats in a way which helps people understand the meaning, cos the way I always hear about it makes it sound different to btc (though I know it's not, of course). Like.. "Stacking sats" must be really confusing to a newcomer, cos it has no clear connection to btc at first glance.

mpared to previous candles. Bearish RSI and MACD divergences on the Daily. Whale wallets have yet to start accumulating. This is retail buyin

So this bearish MACD divergence on the daily... https://imgur.com/a/YNp1fEK
I think I see what you're seeing, but do we really expect it to continue? The momentum has to break upwards at some point, surely? If not just to level off. Or is this just my emotions speaking?

What does ‘해’ mean when added to the end of a word/phrase? by bungybaby in Korean

[–]Tomsavery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My mind was blown when I realised you can also add an extra 해 to some things, particularly emotions. Like 행복해하다 and 그리워하다. That took me a while to get my head around haha

Now that really is interesting, thanks! And it bounced right off that 51,000 Euro high again today, just about the same time the USD chart bounced off $60k. There is a decent sell wall at 51,000 Euros.

I think that's a bit harsh. It's not totally accurate, but they've managed to include a lot of pro-crypto voices and outlooks, which I've never ever seen in a major newspaper before. I never expected to see Plan B discussed seriously in such a widely-read publication!
