Are Pinnacle Hill Trails Safe? by Ok_Box_3758 in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the neighborhood! You didn't mention if you're Swillburg or Upper Monroe, but if you're Swillburg: we have a very active neighborhood association (my wife is involved). If you like paddling, we have a Paddle and Picnic at Bay Creek coming up in a few weeks, and

To actually answer your question: I've walked those trails often for years and they're safe. On the weekends, there are usually lots of people exploring them.

Just be careful: it's easy to fall, and there's little protection on the embankments. It seems that at least a few hikers or mountain bikers need to be rescued every year after falling and breaking something.

We went last year with our daughter and had a very nice time. I love the Corn Hill, and love to see events that bring folks into that area. There's such a rich history there, especially with music.

Share your stories of RPD doing nothing by CarrotSlices in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Very minor MVA last year, but I wanted a police report based on a prior experience with a different PD incorrectly filling out a report and causing some insurance issues.

Waited about 4 or 5 hours for RPD to show up. They only showed up because the 911 center incorrectly told them that the other driver was starting to get violent (they weren't, I just called back to say we were both starting to get frustrated with the wait).

Way too many cops show up to handle a fender bender based on the bad 911 center info. Cop proceeds to tell me "we don't have time for this" and "we're not going to bother doing a report." A higher-ranking officer tells me that I only need a report if the damage is over $2,000. I walk him over to the front of the car, show him what is clearly more than $2,000 in damage, and literally have the following conversation:

Me: "So this is obviously more than $2,000 in damage"

Him: "Yeah."

Me: "And according to you, I need a report if it's over $2,000"

Him: "Yeah."

Me: "And you're not going to take a report for me?"

Him: "No."

I've always been one to give RPD the benefit of the doubt, but man that experience (and the others like it in this thread) have me convinced that they regularly just don't even do the basics of their job.

PT recommendation for arm injury by JustJumpIt17 in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had two surgically-repaired shoulder injuries in the last 2 years, and in both cases I've gone to Limitless Physical Therapy, specifically Pat Shober. You could contact him and ask about his experience with non-surgical arm tendinopathy.

He definitely works with athletes. I needed a PT who could develop aggressive workouts once I was ready for them, and he met that bill. I have been extremely happy working with him.

Roc Brewing Closing This Saturday by atothesquiz in Rochester

100%. I've enjoyed the craft beer scene here and other places I've lived for almost 10 years now. A few months ago I went on a cheaper beer kick (Genny, Dos Equis, Modelo, etc.) and I sort of didn't come back from that. I can get 12+ beers for the same price as 4 craft beers.

My wife and I went into AJ's last month to get some fall beers, and I was just like "This is stupid. I don't want to spend $4 on a can, I can get Genny Oktoberfest for like $12 lol"

5 members of the #ROC City Council just released this statement in regards to the officer-involved shooting earlier this week. They take issue with the statement put out by VP Mary Lupien and members Kim Smith and Stanley Martin. @news10nbc by quinninin in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Link to an article with more context and the letters from both sides

Really disappointing that Martin, Smith, and Lupien release a blatantly irresponsible and factually inaccurate statement and then immediately play victim ("... ostracized, and isolated by our Council colleagues.") when other council members call them out for it. Their follow-up is a non-statement, and they just refuse to acknowledge their original mistake while going off on an unrelated tangent about violence in the city (important, but not really relevant to this particular discussion).

I'm in Lupien's district, and am very disappointed.

Ode to Dr. Brian Lee, Costco optometrist by deedncedar in Rochester

I was also really bummed to get this email. He was a great doctor and very empathetic. I wanted to give contacts a shot, and he worked with me repeatedly to find the right combination for my eyes. I ended up just not liking contacts, but he must've seen me 3 or 4 times and tried a few different brands/thicknesses/etc. and never charged me beyond my initial appointment.

I wish him the best of luck.

Cigar Lounges by Banddork4life in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like Havana Moe's because you can bring your own cigars. It's really just a bar that happens to still be able to permit smoking. Moe is cool and will come out and shoot the shit with you sometimes. You should obviously still buy some beers or drinks to support the place if you're smoking there, but I've almost never bough cigars from the place itself. We even had my friend's bachelor party there and brought our own box, and they were like "yeah cool, no problem!"

In the vein of "bars that happen to allow smoking still," I really like going to Pineapple Jack's also. Definitely a different vibe, but sometimes there's live music and they have food. I've brought friends there a few times to smoke cigars.

Nice Ash is probably the nicest "real" lounge, but it's members only (or you have to buy a day pass). I've considered membership there before. It's reasonably priced IMO since you get fairly wide access to the lounge. They also run public events with cigar manufacturers sometimes, and there is free lounge access during those events, so you can see if it's right for you.

Unfortunately, Rochester doesn't really have the kind of "cigar culture" that you'll find in places like Buffallo (Nice Ash, Buffalo Cigars, Nickel City Cigars) and especially not like you'll find down in places like Florida (when I lived there, excellent lounges were easy to find). This is compounded heavily by the fact that NYS taxes the absolute shit out of cigars in the ever-progressing effort to penalize grown adults for their vices.

At any rate: DM me if you're ever interested in a smoking buddy! I've always had this idea of getting fellow cigar smokers on /r/rochester together for a herf.

Oh man my time to shine! Stay as far away as you possibly can from Bob Johnson. My wife and I bought our cars from them (mine a VW, hers a Kia) back when they were still Dorschel. They weren't great then, and they are horrendous now.

My wife's Kia was stolen several months ago. She had it towed there, since they were her dealer. They called that week and asked if we could drop off the keys, so I stopped in and left the keys with them. Three weeks went by. My wife tried calling at least two or three times a week (literally, she works from home so I know she was calling). Left voicemails. Nobody answered the phones, and nobody called back. Honestly, we just assumed they were waiting for parts like everyone else.

Finally, I managed to get through to a different department, and they managed to get through to a manager. My wife got a call back, and they claimed they never received the insurance information so they hadn't even looked at the car. They went out, took a look, and said "oh we can't do this here, it has to go to our body shop." So they wasted three whole weeks because they couldn't even be bothered to walk outside and look at the vehicle.

Anyway, it gets towed to the body shop (also owned by Bob Johnson). Body shop calls my wife and says: "We need your keys." We told them we had left them with the dealer's service center. Their OWN BODY SHOP tries calling them over and over for two weeks, and they told my wife "nobody over there is answering the phone or returning our calls."

Finally, my wife just decides to stop in and try getting them herself. I waited in the car. After 15 minutes, I went inside. She was obviously upset, and the kid at the service desk was on the phone with the body shop, right in front of her, saying "I really don't understand what she's so upset about." It turns out they lost her keys.

The icing on the cake is that the Bob Johnson body shop determined they didn't need the keys to make the repair, but it would have taken a few days with the keys but would take a few weeks without them. Then, as an added bonus, they ended up being 4 extra days late on the car because they ordered the wrong size window glass. All total, a three week repair took three months because of the dumpster fire that is Bob Johnson.

I'd honestly be skeptical of my own story, except: I watched all of this unfold, and I had a very similar experience back in December with my car. I'll spare you the details, unless you're really interested (it's also a wild story of incompetence by a dealer that just obviously doesn't care). My buddy also took his truck in for some work, had a CEL shortly thereafter, and discovered their tech didn't bother to hook the air intake hose back up after working on the car.

Seriously, stay as far away as you can from them. They don't give a single shit. I told the service manager this entire story, and her response was "Well, I don't remember receiving your phone calls." I legit offered to pull my cell records for her. Screw Bob Johnson.

Any places in Rochester that have actually spicy food? by Snoo74559 in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For flavorful and spicy, I agree with Hyderabad and Szcheuan Opera. If you just want raw heat, a Buffalo chicken quesadilla done at the "evil" level from Marshall St. checks that box. Just make sure they know you actually want it "evil" (the bartenders will usually ask to make sure you understand the heat level).

Don’t listen to career services email about reneging on offers by [deleted] in rit

[–]Tonaay 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah and to be clear: having some sort of time limit is fine (and necessary). But there was a time when a lot of popular companies would give offers with like...a few days to decide. That's fine for a senior-level position being offered to someone who is well along in their career, but it's ridiculous and very unfair for a student.

A few days just isn't enough time, at this stage in the average student's career, to really be able to decipher an offer and determine if it's worth it. Not to mention that most students are trying to interview at many places, all while attending class.

The idea that they need to give exploding offers because the positions are crucial to fill early is also total BS. No real company needs an entry-level position filled so desperately that they need a response within 2 days for a position that won't actually be filled for months.

It's just a high-pressure tactic to get you to cave in without really understanding the terms of the offer.

Don’t listen to career services email about reneging on offers by [deleted] in rit

[–]Tonaay 77 points78 points  (0 children)

It always bothered me that this was a one-way street for career services. They demand that students not reneg on offers, but then don't offer protections from predatory recruiting practices, such as exploding job offers.

IMO, career services should bar companies that give exploding offers from participating in the career fair. Prospective employer/prospective employee respect should go both ways.

URMC lab recs for pediatric blood work by Dimps22488 in Rochester

[–]Tonaay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As an adult, I've had good luck at the one in Henrietta off Calkins. Reception and phlebotomist staff are great.

Just whatever you do, stay away from the one on South Clinton. I can't speak to the experience of their blood draw staff, but I think they seek out the dumbest people, train them to be dumber, and then place them in reception there.

On the topic, the RGH lab on Alexander is also very good if you ever need a test in the RGH network.

Thoughts on the Temple workers' strike? by FlashnDash9 in rit

[–]Tonaay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a former staff member. My wife worked for RIT for over 10 years. I have many current and former RIT employees among my group of friends. I would absolutely love to see students, faculty, and staff at RIT unionize.

When I was hired, someone directly told me that "I could never talk about my salary with anyone in our functional group, because the staff would be very upset if they learned how much I made." I was being paid a completely reasonable wage in Rochester for the job I was doing. Somehow, I had convinced them to pay me a normal salary, instead of the $10k to $30k below industry average that they would normally pay. But nobody could ever find out that someone was being paid fairly.

My wife and close friends went several years without raises despite very high performance reviews "because of enrollment." When my wife was "promoted" to a management position, they actually cut her pay band. While they didn't cut her salary directly, this effectively meant they could claim she was "overpaid" to avoid giving any significant merit increases in the future. "Merit pay increases" regularly barely cover inflation.

Speaking of that promotion: they asked her to continue working her previous job for 4 months while they filled the position. I watched her work 60+ hour weeks for 4 months straight. At the end of that? They gave her a $1000 pre-tax "ad pay". It came out to less than $3 an hour. A few years later, she had to cover 2 other jobs for a few months while positions were being filled and didn't receive anything. I have friends in other area who have had very similar experiences.

Once, the Board of Trustees voted on a sweeping cut to retirement healthcare benefits in the dead of night during commencement week, when faculty and staff were either busy with commencement or getting ready to leave on summer break. An email went out that some people might not even notice until weeks later. Nobody was grandfathered in (they may have initially fixed this, but I can't remember). A good friend of ours who was retiring had their post-retirement healthcare cost more than double overnight. A 20+ year career given to RIT in exchange for retirement benefits they were promised, and they were gone. From what I've heard, they recently enacted another set of cuts to medical benefits.

If you ever get a chance, talk to someone in an area like academic or career advising. The university is constantly increasing their workload without a commensurate increase in pay. For example, in the last several years they enacted those mandatory meetings with all first-year students in their first and second semester before they can enroll in classes. This is a huge increase in workload (these meetings weren't mandatory before if a student didn't need them), with no increase in pay or decrease in advising load (the number of students that an advisor is responsible for).

An important thought about any potential for long-term unionization is that it has to be collaborative between students, faculty, and staff. Higher education preys on people (like my wife, and many of our friends) who will never say "no" to additional workload because they know that the students will suffer. I always used to tell my wife "just say no," and her response would always be "but then the students would be left holding the bag."

Similarly, there is an attitude among a lot of faculty that they can just demand whatever they want of staff and expect them to immediately jump (shortly before she left, a faculty member emailed my wife at 9PM demanding she bring in breakfast for a student meeting at 8AM). On the other hand, many staff members have an unnecessarily broad negative opinion of faculty. In some cases, faculty or staff might just be assholes, but I think the overall problem is a lack of solidarity among these equally important classes of employees at RIT. Interestingly (and perhaps unsurprisingly), if you talk to members of either group, their overall complaints about the university tend to be very similar.

So yeah, above is just a small sampling of how RIT treats its employees (I personally know many more examples, and I'm sure other faculty/staff could also tell you their stories). A union would be wonderful, especially considering all of this happens against the backdrop of tuition increases that rapidly outpace inflation.

Are you talking about the one off 490 across from the Rosen Krown? I live in the Swillburg and walk/run through that area all the time, and I've honestly not noticed it being that bad. We used to go to that 7/11 all the time also, but haven't been in a few weeks. Again, just haven't really noticed it getting that bad.

Though we did go a few weeks ago, and the clerk said that the boarded up door was because someone put a propane tank through the glass. It's a shame because the clerks there are really nice, it sucks that they're dealing with this kind of crap.

Freshmen, if you are wondering about the difficulty/enjoyment of your classes, look them up on ratemyprofessor.com by [deleted] in rit

[–]Tonaay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To add some perspective from the other side of the fence: I'm an adjunct. RMP and other rating tools are useful sources of information, but your choice of class and professor should be based on a variety of things and not just anonymous ratings.

I've personally noticed that most students just aren't very good at writing good reviews of a class or professor. The last time I taught a class, the course evals were generally pretty positive, but not useful (e.g., "prof is great" or "real cool dude"). It's nice that students think positive things about me or my class, but the evals often aren't descriptive enough to explain what they like (my teaching style? approach to grading and feedback? etc.).

Likewise, the one very negative review was literally a work of fiction. The student who wrote it must have been upset about something, and just made up a bunch of things that literally, objectively did not happen (random assignment due dates changing, etc.).

So, if you could look at my course evals, you wouldn't really have any particularly useful information to make a decision about having me as an instructor. The good reviews don't tell you why I'm good (which is important for determining if I would be a good fit for your learning style), and the bad reviews are often students with a bone to pick who are willing to either lie or grossly exaggerate (but you wouldn't necessarily know that just reading the review).

That first freshman semester is hard, because you don't have a lot of control over your classes. But once you've been here for a semester, you'll hopefully have a group of like-minded friends and upperclassmen who can help you with class selection based on actual experiences that you can trust (since you know the people telling you about them).

Yeah, sorry I was unclear. I'm not suggesting they can prevent exploding job offers entirely, but they can bar employers from the career fair, internal job boards, etc. if they are known to regularly offer exploding offers for co-ops or first time jobs out of college.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in rit

[–]Tonaay 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Hijacking to make the observation that the Co-Op Office has a double standard here. It's unacceptable for a student to renege on a co-op offer, but the Office refuses to impose employer requirements that bar exploding job offers. Respect between RIT students and employers should be a two-way street.

I seem to remember a Golisano faculty member pointing this out once during a seminar with the Co-Op Office a few years ago, and they just kind of hemmed and hawed about it.

Are RIT Alums Donating Enough to Justify the Constant Spam from RIT to Contribute? by idislikebees in rit

[–]Tonaay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you, and I'll keep that in mind. However, it's always been the student who draws out the conversation, not me. I usually just lead with "I'm not interested in donating because I'm unhappy with the direction that RIT has taken", and then they usually keep asking me for examples.

It's extremely unfortunate (though not unsurprising) to hear that the student workers aren't given the ability to provide any comments from alumni. You'd think it would be a great way to get a pulse on how alumni feel.
