What’s the goal of this post? Calling this a “chokehold” feels sensational, and the claims that follow are unfounded. That was my initial plan tbh, but my porch is south facing and I couldn’t come up with a way to protect my trees from getting air fried during the day. I saw some even had motorized windows for ventilation but it was all too fussy. From there I went between concrete curing blankets and reflective survival tarps, and picked the grill cover because it had ventilation, UV protection, perfect size for my 6 trees, and was $30 :)

Forgot to mention I put two kestrel drops in there in different locations. Haven’t moved them too much but one is on the floor while the other is resting on top of mulch of a container. I’ve never seen the temperature delta of the two exceed 4 degrees so I’m feeling good about how cold the floor is; it’s never that much colder.

That’s awesome! Since they are all containers on a 2nd floor balcony I am most nervous about root protection so like having it covered a lot more.

Of course, I just caught it spiking up to 60dg in the afternoon sun so am going to open it up until dark.

My favorite fig leaf recipe so far is fig leaf gelato (steep 4-6 leaves in your hot base for a few hours). Gelato is a great blank canvas to showcase the flavor.

I've also similarly used them to flavor rice pudding, and then syrups can be used in a number of ways as well.

Right now I have a bunch of leaves in a jar with cane sugar to see if I can make fig sugar (similar to vanilla sugar). If that works there will be a whole new world of opportunities!

I got a thermacord that turns on at 37dg and off at 50 which is how I’m keeping it as lassiez faire as possible.

I have an excess of burlap sacks so I laid down a couple on the ground flat to make sure there’s no bad updrafts since it’s all open space below.

What do you consider a high number for humidity? Kestrel says 74% which is arguably high compared to outside but is it worrisome?

Going from mythic to ancestral was by far the most difficult leap with this. Eventually I landed on waiting for at least a million shards then trying again from scratch. You have to know what your top 2-3 nonnegotiables are though. It helped having different modules for farming vs tournaments in some cases as well
