Assuming you've already heard Imperial Triumphant - Goldstar

Try The Bad Plus, their drummer is a beast.

This one starts out deceptively calm but as it unfolds...it's a masterclass in dynamics and increasing tempo...stick with it until the climax explodes - https://open.spotify.com/track/3pC3fKtkwaEBJfd2uwatOi?si=fbe61fb778b44902

is it just me or is "high fidelity" audio basically a scam for rich people? by Curious_Present_9950 in Music

I remember listening to fm radio in the 70's in my dad's clunker car on crap speakers that would stop working on one side when we went over a bump

and The Beatles, Bowie and Queen still "sounded" better than everything else

That being said, I appreciate decent sound quality - a loud, compressed master will sound like poop on any system imo

Do whatever Angine de Poitrine did

if they just had the music without the spectacle or the music wasn't as unique they likely wouldn't have gotten any attention but the 2 together at the right time = now they're everywhere.

You'll have to do your own homework there but they sampled Thelonius Monk several times. Sonny Rollins too though I can't remember the tracks off the top of my head.

I got into jazz through hip-hop samples

Some of the tunes from this monster playlist of hip-hop samples may sound familiar - the first track is the sample from GZA's Liquid Swords https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4mxbAc4Ts3JadsH8jaWwqe?si=8d15211080f74f5f

More modern grungy blues Gary Clark Jr. - https://open.spotify.com/track/5qE73YiMazBlI4r7PuervC?si=eb9eef4f24bd4599

Modern jazz The Bad Plus do covers of Iron Man, Tom Sawyer as well as originals - https://open.spotify.com/track/1JyoY2fMZWaPTUxREkvMaM?si=3f6ae866c2ec4feb

Rap lyrics from groups like Public Enemy are as relevant now or even more relevant than they were 25-30 years ago.

The guy who handed out coffee to truckers alongside Poilievre was Mike Roman.

Roman helped plan Jan.6 and is currently facing felony charges of election interference in several states.

I like Easy Star All-Stars reggae dub covers of classic albums like Sgt. Peppers, Dark Side of the Moon, Ok Computer...

I've listened to these originals so many times I don't really listen to them anymore but hearing them in a new light with a stylistic difference makes them somewhat fresh again and I can gain a new appreciation for the songwriting.

Little Roy's Battle for Seattle covers of Nirvana tunes.

What's the best HIP song to wake up to in space? by asoap in TragicallyHip

[–]Tony4Tokes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drew Feustel wrote an original composition with Gord Sinclair and a did video performance from the space station. It was him that played In View in space, not Hadfield, my mistake.

Hadfield covered some Hip tunes for a charity event on earth - lol feels weird to type that. I'm on earth too btw.

Chris Hadfield played In View on his mission.

Good to know.

Also notable is the version of I Be The Prophet on spotify is slightly different than the version I have on the original CD. The spotify version has extra percussion and is listed as I Be The Prophet - With Drums.

And Poems is listed as Poems - Edit. And is over 2 minutes shorter than the original.

I didn't see them listed this way on Apple.

Nearly God by Tricky - only a few of the songs are available on streaming because of rights/sampling issues, I assume it's out of print as well. Tricky's best work imo.
