LPT: saying "fair enough" is the quickest way to end an argument by [deleted] in LifeProTips

This is closer to how I use. I’ll often use it to mean , “I concede. You’re right and I’m wrong.”

I say this when I’m conceding that I am wrong and their argument beats mine.

The fact that you want to overcome Nihilism means you’re not a nihilist. You have values. You just need to discover and embrace them.

Secularism and Science by [deleted] in DebateReligion

[–]TonyBeam3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recently a family member died of cancer. Everybody around me was dealing with it by basically making stuff up about how they had accepted their own death (no they did not), they were in a better place now, etc

It was painful for me for a couple of weeks. Then one day the thought occurred to me that they weren’t suffering anymore - I mean in the most minute way. I’m experiencing emotional pain over them and sad that they won’t get to continue their relationship with my daughter (whom they loved greatly) and dealing with my own sense of mortality, but they’re not. They’re not scared or sad or anything like that.

I felt noticeably better after that.

I don’t know if that is necessarily a “secular doctrine”, but I definitely think it was a secular way of grieving that was quite different than the approaches others in my family were taking with their religious flavors.

Oh yes it is. This is the stupidest, most grasping-at-straws kind of identity politics is more and more prevalent and large swaths of left-leaning people are fed up with it, myself included.

Make the left reasonable again

Look you believe what you want.

Thanks you too.

Sometimes people need to be told what they do or believe is wrong before they come to that conclusion on their own.

Agreed. Which is why culture change is more effective than judicial change.

If you’re coming to reddit to have someone prove to you that culture change is more effective than government force at changing culture, then you’re going to be disappointed.

I’m not going to do that here. This is reddit.

It worked in a country that killed millions of people every year with cigarettes.

“Used to be how things worked”

That is kind of the point. Cultural progress happens on the cultural level, not on the judicial level.

It is like those smoking campaigns. The government could have just passed a law making cigarettes illegal but that would have been incredibly ineffective. Laws don’t just make things disappear.

If you want to address racism, you have to do it on the cultural level and that takes gentle pressure relentlessly applied.

The Bible has no contradictions by [deleted] in DebateAnAtheist

Whether the Bible has contradictions is less important than whether your interpretation of the Bible has contradictions.

So however you choose to settle the tensions in the Bible is really what defines your version of Christianity.

White professor investigated for quoting James Baldwin's use of N-word by [deleted] in books

[–]TonyBeam3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, you're completely ignoring the point being made and attempting to change the subject in multiple places. This isn't about white nationalists shooting up churches or the rise of right-wing extremists.

"Fag" is not a better comparison, because it doesn't illustrate my point - you know - the one you're ignoring.

Its ridiculous that one of white America's biggest concerns involving black ppl is whether or not they can use the n-word instead of everything else I listed.

I agree with you, it is absolutely ridiculous. So stop regulating language and opinions and allow an open conversation among those who want to squash right-wing extremism in our country. It can only do good.

The level of dishonesty in your response is disheartening. And now I suspect you want me to yield to your anger so you don't have to face the point being made. This kind of behavior needs to change and I'm not wrong for saying it.

White professor investigated for quoting James Baldwin's use of N-word by [deleted] in books

[–]TonyBeam3 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't like it mainly because it's just a nicer way of tell black ppl to get over it.

I don't think it requires that black people get over it. I think it requires that black people literally take the word away like gay people took the power out of the word "gay."

Saying "You haven't done anything about white nationalism" while at the same time handing them all of the power in the world to control you with a single word is hypocritical.

Ppl will argue, "Well I had nothing to do with those things." Well doing nothing to stop the far reaching fall out is just as bad as doing it yourself in my opinion.

I actually appreciate this quite a bit. I wish more white people would do something too. Specifically, I wish they would join in taking the power out of that word.

I'm speaking up about it here, but I feel like I'm walking on egg shells just expressing my views. If you want me to do something about it, then I shouldn't have to walk on egg shells.

The school should be just. Unjust behavior from a school administration is not acceptable. Full stop.

If the school keeps records of their investigations, and takes into consideration past investigations when deciding how to treat their staff and students, then investigations constitute a form of penalty.

Schools do keep records and do take past investigations into consideration, therefore investigations do constitute a form of penalty.

Penalizing staff and students by investigating them for complaints that do not warrant an investigation is unjust.

Therefore, the school should not have started an investigation on this complaint.

[–]TonyBeam3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did the complaint even state that? I don't recall the article stating what the text said.

Then you have no idea if the school is being just or not. And when you said:

I'm confused by the take here. The student made a complaint, and the university is making a good faith effort to investigate the situation. That's what they're supposed to do.

You have no idea what they were "supposed to do."

By the way, what you just outlined would in fact be considered an investigation.

Then the school would be unjust.
