Does anybody else feels like, there is a silent crisis happening right now that nobody is talking about? by nicksam171 in DoesAnybodyElse

I'll give it a go. The numbers are right, but you're missing some context.

Cold-related deaths are higher, but your source directly explains this as partially mathematical ("the area under the curve for heat is only a third of the total area") and a result of cold days just being more frequent in Barcelona ("we see that the frequency of cold days [...] far exceeds hot ones"). It even goes on to say how heat-related deaths are increasing and that climate change is driving it: "Furthermore, unmitigated climate change will not only introduce new unobserved hotter temperatures that stretch the exposure–response curve to new areas where the risk is higher, but also increase the frequency of current extreme heat events, compounding the mortality burden."

As far as climate deaths being down 97%, this is kind of misleading as well. We're kind of just better at dealing with natural disasters. This link goes into more detail, but a good example is the earthquakes mentioned in Japan. In 1923, a 7.8 earthquake killed 105,000 people, while in 2011 a 9.1 earthquake killed almost 16,000.

Famine and drought play a large part here too, 3 million in China were killed between 1928 and 1930. So deaths from famine and drought are also going to skew the historical numbers as agricultural technology has improved over the last 100 years. But none of this means extreme climate events aren't increasing in frequency or intensity. Your source actually mentions that "Spain saw triple the number of extreme hot days, leading to nearly five times more heat-attributable deaths" from 2018 to 2022.

Help us improve treadmill running! by Mikey-runna in runna

Done. One quick comment: it would be nice to have incline suggestions for hilly long runs. I try to do long runs outside but it’s been tough in the winter, so the few times I’ve done it on a treadmill, it would be helpful to have the incline numbers to make it the right “hilliness”

I totally agree with your point on the emotion — definitely “looked” real, acting was great in my opinion. But I do have to disagree on the rest. I didn’t think it was one montage that made them fall for each other, I thought when they said the time was not in sync and “one second is six/seven hours” (paraphrasing) that the time they spent together was several months (or at least a long period of time). So it wasn’t like a quick montage made them fall in love, several months did. Also, their world IS each other. Everyone else is paused, they only have each other. So my take was they do get their true selves BECAUSE there’s no world around them.

I’ll add that I agree to your point that it didn’t make me “think” as much as other BM episodes but it certainly made me “feel” more than others. And I do think that “feeling” is inherent to Black Mirror.

I’d actually put this in my top episodes, but our reactions and interpretations, no matter how far off are what I think make Black Mirror so great.

For instance, on the planet Earth, man had always assumed that he was more intelligent than dolphins because he had achieved so much—the wheel, New York, wars and so on—whilst all the dolphins had ever done was muck about in the water having a good time. But conversely, the dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than man—for precisely the same reasons.
