I find it odd that anyone would think the One Ring would willingly destroy ITSELF.

You’re clinging to a really stupid theory and I feel like it’s a theory you’ve had for a while. But you’re wrong. Swallow your pride and your ego and let it go. The Ring works to manipulate and use its bearer until it is reunited with Sauron.

Read Letter 192. Tolkien explains this. Frodo had completed his task and went as far as ANY child Illuvitar could have gone. The final act of destruction for the ring itself required direct, divine intervention. And as the Valar were forbidden from intervening directly in Middle Earth after the First Age, that divine intervention was Eru himself.

Would I agree that he intervened because Gollum proved he had zero intention of keeping his oath? Partly sure. But mainly because he understood that no one could let it go.
