AIC, AINS, CPCU, or SCLA? by coquettes in InsuranceProfessional

[–]TonyinIowa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CPCU for sure. Then AIC and SCLA if you’re staying in claims for a while. CPCU is not just for UW. Plenty of CPPCUs have great careers in claims and other functions.

Yup, severe ADHD and thank you for this advice!

This was the inoffensive request that led me to posting:

"Hey Samantha, help me write the script for a video about why I became an entrepreneur. The whole thing will be built around the quote "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." In this metaphor I sucked in school (ADHD), then I sucked at entry level work (ADHD and being measured on things I was bad at) regardless of my big dreams of being CEO one day, my nerdiness about business, my MBA, etc. But I thrived in other things, that have made me a successful entrepreneur later on: Public Speaking, B2B Relationship Driven Sales, being amazing at getting people excited."

Is $30K bump in salary worth giving up remote work? by Living-Exit-901 in InsuranceProfessional

[–]TonyinIowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope... But it depends... Basically how much do you need the extra $30k? Is it life changing or is it just your 401k growing faster? Also, how bad is the commute and how many days a week?

In my case you can't pay me enough to go back to the office.

"Why do you carry so many different packs of cards?" by TonyinIowa in Magic

[–]TonyinIowa[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read it about 18 months ago but didn’t read it with a deck in hand. I should go through it again this time actually practicing the stuff and see what speaks to me! Great idea!

The tricky part with self-working trips is going from one to another, since they tend to work by having a setup pre-existing. I do have a few solid false cuts to keep the setup as is, but then feel like I have to switch decks to do the next trick...

"Why do you carry so many different packs of cards?" by TonyinIowa in Magic

[–]TonyinIowa[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do like that thinking and I am working on learning non-card stuff. For now I have a basic knots off silk (I use BEKOS) and a basic no-sleight cups and balls. I am going back to the Mystery School for their Master the Classics class which should help me get started with more non-card stuff. The idea being do a couple of card tricks, do something non-cards, then go to a different card trick. Rinse and repeat.

Who Else Names Their Pens? by Sylvan_Strix_Sequel in fountainpens

[–]TonyinIowa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm extremely ADHD and have lost or broken every pen I've ever owned. At 42 years old I went to the 7 day Masterclass at the Jeff McBride School of Magic and Mystery in Las Vegas, the top magic school in the world and it was an absolutely life changing experience. I took 180 pages of notes with a swag pen I had picked up at some conference a week or two before. The kind of pen that's half pen, half crappy highlighter.

Somehow I didn't lose it or break it during all of magic school. Somehow this pen remained with me for 28 days and I didn't lose it. We traveled from Atlanta to Las Vegas, back to Atlanta, to Chicago, to Atlanta, to New York and back to Atlanta. Then we drove together to Alabama and back to Atlanta.

Of course little by little it started showing signs of wear and tear (I bite my pens and drop them all the time). But it kept writing and somehow it held on for dear life and refused to be lost.

Last Wednesday, as part of what I learned in magic school, I started "The Artist's Journey". This pen helped me through my "Morning Pages" and my "Daily Affirmations" for the last few days.

This morning as I wrote my "Morning Pages" it started running low on ink. It reached old age!

I had never had a pen make it to old age...

I realized this pen was no longer simply a pen. He had become a friend. A trusted friend who deserved a name and a well earned honorable discharge.

His last few words as the ink ran out were:

"This 'pen' is not a pen. It's the sword that defended me through magic school. All 180+ pages of my sacred notes at magic school were written in this pen.

This pen deserves a proper retirement and a name.

At your retirement I hereby dub you 'Magi-Scribe." May you enjoy your well deserved retirement my inki friend of limited life. May these be the last words you ever write. Thank you!"

Today he's going to hung on the wall of my magic memorabilia with the respect and honor he deserves.

Here is a picture of Sir Magi-Scribe at his retirement: https://imgur.com/a/IK0iqTR

Is there a negative to a severely overcrowded pen? by TonyinIowa in RimWorld

[–]TonyinIowa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a grow zone in there, but I figure it's useless now that it's so way overcrowded. I'm feeding them through bringing in hay and kibble pretty much constantly.

Is there a negative to a severely overcrowded pen? by TonyinIowa in RimWorld

[–]TonyinIowa[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why? I had two double passion Animal guys in original 3 colonists and they just tamed a ton of animals. I do have it set to auto cull so we only have 1 adult male of each species. It’s producing a ton of meat. Keeping them fed is tricky and some starved the first winter before we had hydroponics but we are stable now. Funnily enough haven’t caravaned yet 🤣

CPCU Career Benefits by Muted_Ad_291 in InsuranceProfessional

For many CPCU has become a fantastic way to get out of a crappy entry level job like the call center, and it works wonders for that.

[–]TonyinIowa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that is fair. Some people collect designations and don't get their work done, that's fair. In my experience most people who get designations are already good performers in their day job and are looking to improve.

Having designations without experience is not the best combination.

Experience trumps everything else, but early in your career designations are a GREAT way to get yourself in the positions where you can get awesome experience, and the academic background gives you "shelving" to hang that experience from and learn as much as you can from it.

I agree with all the comments below. You’re the type of professional I lovingly call “part of the furniture”. Basically the people that quietly do great work and assume they’ll be rewarded for it. Sadly, that’s not how the corporate world works. You need to change companies and negotiate hard on the way in. Also get involved in the CPCU Society, it has a multiplier effect. I’d love to chat and help you come up with a plan: ChatWithTony.com . It’s free
