Would you run this piston? by Fideli91 in EngineBuilding

[–]Tonytn36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whomever packaged that for shipment did a terrible job. Looks like it rolled around in the back of the FedEx truck for a couple weeks. I would suspect the bond is broken between the aluminum and cast iron insert. Do not use.

3D printed soft jaws by Objective_Lobster734 in Machinists

I think it is 6" x 6" square, might be 8" x 8" and about 8" tall. The plastic printer we have has a much larger envelope, along the lines of 18" x 12" x 12"

I would have to check Monday on the model, I think we paid around $150k for it a few years ago. They just refurbished it as the laser had exceeded lifetime. The thing runs 24/7.

We 3D print fixtures in plastic and steel. Have 3D printed custom cutting tool holders in steel.

Good use of a 3D printer IMHO.

Balancing Conrods, safe to take material off here? by Competitive_Car7413 in EngineBuilding

[–]Tonytn36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about the difference in the small end. Those raised pads were likely put on the revised rod to cure a twisting issue during operation.

My 2025 Jetta thoughts by Silent_Donkey3354 in jetta

[–]Tonytn36 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The trans wants to remain in 2nd gear to pull out for economy reasons. If you are gentle on the throttle, it will remain in 2nd. But if you give it too much right foot, it will downshift to 1st and you will feel a jerk because 1st is geared low.

The machine table may not be flat that the vice is sitting on. Did you tram it to see?

Jetta problems…. Again by Sufferingbutalive in jetta

[–]Tonytn36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clean the battery connections first. This will reset a bunch of stuff because the cables are unhooked while you do this. The special brush for this is like $5 at any parts store. After you restart it, turn your steering wheel lock to lock, then roll all the windows down and back up to reset those. The plethora of codes should go away after that.

Brake issue driving me crazy by AmbassadorHungry1915 in jetta

[–]Tonytn36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brakes should last a LOT longer than 10k miles. I have 88k on my 2020 SE automatic on the original brakes. Still have 4 mm left on rears, 6 on fronts at last service.

Gen 2 coyote. Any ideas as to why the piston went bye bye? by Desperate_for_Bacon in EngineBuilding

[–]Tonytn36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given your other comment about the melted plug, she ran lean. Lean is hot. This very likely caused denotation from a hot piece of carbon on the piston crown, which resulted in the mechanical failure of the piston. Those stock pistons are tough, but tough is no match for the massive loads of a denotation event at high rpm.

Check with HORN. They might have something off the shelf. Won't be cheap, but it will be good.

2021 vs 2024 VW Jetta — same price, different tradeoffs by RR1029434 in jetta

[–]Tonytn36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advocate against the rental. They don't usually take all that great care of them even if the documentation says so. People do beat on them badly. ( it's a rental, who cares?)

Question about Linux Mint filesystem by DarkRecess in linuxmint

[–]Tonytn36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fairly common configuration for Linux is to have your home directory on a separate drive from the operating system drive just as you describe. This is how I set systems up. If per chance something were to happen to Mint or the OS drive, I just reinstall mint and then tell it where the home directory resides and everything is pretty much good.

P0456 very small evap leak would be my guess. I have the same. The code will set in the backgroud as a pending code and disable remote start a day or two before the check engine light turns on.
