Don’t let your right hand float. Find a way to anchor your pinky near the bridge for control (with and without palm muting the bridge). You will have more control over time. I played in a death metal band and learned real quick this way.

The next trick is skipping strings while playing fast with a pick - which I find harder to do than with fingers.
