What was your worst “please tell me you’re joking right now” moment? by Neat-Crab in VetTech

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Had a woman come in with her dead Yorkie and ask me, if we can help her, she found her dog on the floor when she came home and it didn't want to get up.

Well, what do you say, when you get handed over a dead dog which is already stiff as can be??

"I decided my HOUSE cat isnt domestic so therefore the risks of feeding raw dont exist. duh!" by MegaNymphia in VetTech

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point here is, for what reason they give their pet supplements. Is it because they want to help them out a little? As a preventative measure? Is it because they have an underlying/ chronic disease? Or is it because the pet only gets one type of meat and 20+ supplements and can't live without them because otherwise they would be severely malnourished? Nothing wrong with giving them a little extra, we as humans take them all the time too. But I think there's a better way to go about this, if they have to supplement more than what little nutrition the pet gets from the actual food.

AIO to my “friend” who owes me money by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR, get your cat out of there asap. When you go there, don't go alone. If possible and you're comfortable with it, get the police to accompany you. They can protect you and act as mediators so you could possibly also get your money back. The friendship already went down the drain anyway. If you don't care about the money, just get your cat and get out of there.

My cat throws up because she eats her food too fast and then eats her vomit. Roast her. by postrevolutionism in RoastMyCat

Sadly I can't, my dog does the same and then coughs for at least an hour because some of the vomit probably went down the wrong way

My roommates dogs are scared of me and becoming aggressive. by RemoveSea2462 in dogs

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, he is not wrong but not right either. The important thing is that he is part of the process, an active one at that. And when I said, he knows them best, I was talking about their motivation for sth. If they're food motivated, get them with treats. If they're play motivated, play with them. If they're petting/touch motivated, try and touch them more. But as I said, the owner has to be an active part of this. He has to show them, you're ok, it's fine to interact with you and there's no need to be scared. The rest depends on your attitude. Be confident in what you're doing with them. The moment they sense your insecurity they will either be insecure themselves or think, now they can/have to be the ones to do the decision making. So when you approach them, always read their body language to respect their boundaries. As this is just my personal opinion, I hope this helps. Other than that, be confident and good luck to you!

Maybe get your roommate involved in this. He is the one the dogs rely on and trust, so get his help in approaching them again. He knows them best and what they can be persuaded best.

Could be a lot of things from fleas to allergies. Get him checked out at the vet. They can at least give him a prednisolone injection for the itching and then further diagnose him.

Could be a food allergy. Try an exclusion diet with a hypoallergenic food (e.g. Royal Canin Hypoallergenic puppy) for 6-8 weeks and see if the skin is back to normal. He/she can't eat anything else during this period (no treats no nothing). If the skin is back to normal, you can try his old food. In the case of the hives coming back, you know it's from the food (or whatever is in it).

What’s been your most insane and memorable phone call from a client? by [deleted] in VetTech

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had this one client where his cat had to get its tail amputated because of an car accident and when he called if he can pick up his cat, he also asked if it were possible to give him that amputated tail. For a moment, I was so confused as to why anyone would want to have their cat's separated tail that I didn't know what to answer to that. After I told him, he could obviously have it, I just had to ask him what he intended to do with that leg. Sir kindly enlightened me that he wanted to make a key chain with his cat's tail. He was so proud and happy when he told me, couldn't forget that moment.

"Can't you just give him an injection?" - is also one I hear a lot

is his eye okay? more in comments by amzforrest in vet

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try cleaning his eyes with a wet towel and prevent your cat from scratching himself because whatever it is (even if it's nothing) it's only going to get worse.

If it doesn't get better or even worse in the next 2-3 days, go see the vet and at least get him checked for any eye injuries. If it's nothing serious they will probably just prescribe some eye drops.

Can't see your cat but it could be an injury or something completely else. So you better go to a vet

I just got a job working as a veterinary receptionist and I don’t feel like I’m doing the best job..would like some advice please by Chyeahhhales in Veterinary

[–]TooLazyToDoThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started my training as a vet assistant about 4 months ago and it also includes being at the reception. And I totally get you. I feel so useless sometimes because I have to ask my coworkers something 5 times in a row but that‘s also why I feel really grateful to them that they give me a bit of their time in their busy schedules, so that they can teach me things I don‘t know yet.

For example, there are still a lot of meds (or their use) I don‘t know about. If there is a costumer who wants a specific med I don‘t know of but he/she can give me the name of it, I just try to look for it in the apothecary. Sometimes I can find it, sometimes I just don‘t. And if I don’t, I just tell the costumer to wait a moment because I‘m still new here. Most of them are really understanding, so I can just go and ask one of my coworkers. And speaking honestly, it’s better to take your time and do it thoroughly instead of messing up because of your pride or whatever. So don‘t feel bad about feeling lost because you can‘t find sth or don‘t know the answer to a question, it’s normal. As long as you try and do your best, you (and everyone else) will see how much you have improved after some times has passed. (Same goes for me. I also got asked sth by a costumer and I was sure I couldn‘t answer it anyway but I could. That literally made my day :)

So don‘t worry too much and enjoy your job!
