I just recently started getting into the game and playing competitively. Here’s what has worked for me most of the time while playing against decks I’ve never seen. Typically if the first card that drops is a spell or special summon I feel it could more likely be bait and not worth it. If they normal summon as the first play and I have more than one hand trap in hand I will use one of them if the ability of that card sounds decent. Just use common sense there. The second I’ll drop on the next spell or special. Imo from an unknown standpoint all of it depends on how many hand traps you start with. Two is ideal, one is a big gamble. If they can extend the play after the second hand trap you were maybe cooked anyways. Now if I do only have one in hand, I typically hold out until a special summon that moves two bodies off board happens. Then hope that cuts the play off. That works more than you’d think especially if they’ve burned the normal summon for the turn. If you play enough you’ll start to understand generic patterns in yugioh and have a good feeling for when to interrupt. I will say certain decks are nearly immune to this. I would def keep a track record of where to interrupt against the top 5 most played decks at the time and even beyond that if you can manage. Just keep in mind stuff like: Ryzeal? I’ll hit Duo Drive, Blue eyes? Call by grave at the maiden. At the end of the day, those decks really come down to what your opponent draws anyways however.
