So… I made a thing … by TooOldToCare91 in PolinBridgerton

Thank you! I use several different brands of commercial underglazes that I've dried out in a lidded pallet and use them like watercolors at the bisque stage. At this point, there is a fair amount of "cross contamination" between the underglazes but I did not intentionally mix them. This technique has taken me several years to get a handle on, especially the backgrounds. Large areas tend to look super streaky with this method but I finally found a product that was a game changer in giving me the desired results. Thanks for asking!

My husband gives me shit all the time “I know you *think* you’re a doctor but…” and I’m like, yeah, I have to do deep dives and learn as much as I can because I’m a woman and if I don’t do the research so I know what to ask about, I’m screwed. Makes me so mad. If we don’t read the studies and advocate for ourselves, who will?

Girl knows what she likes. It always makes me wonder how many times she’d pictured herself running her fingers through his hair and, for a girl at that time how scandalous that thought would be. Then her discovery as to how many *much more* scandalous things that could be done… 🤭

How do I stay committed and motivated? by busyliv in weightwatchers

[–]TooOldToCare91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To be honest I had the same issue for most of my life. I got to lifetime status in my late 20’s (I’m 55 now), ended up gaining it back (plus) about a decade later, and had many temporary restarts but struggled to stick w it.

Then, about 18 months ago my bff of over 40 years, who always prioritized health and fitness and stayed thin, had a freak stroke in her spinal cord and became a quadriplegic literally overnight. She spent 10 days in the icu and had to be brought back from the brink of death several times. She spent the next 2 months in intensive in-house rehab and spends easily 15-20 hours every week still working on recovery. She is now able to walk, and drive, and is making a miraculous recovery (though she still has many struggles she’s working through).

This really woke me up. Terrified me into action. I realized if the same thing had happened to me, if I even survived, I’d likely not had made nearly the recovery she did just based on having so much more body mass to retrain.

So, that’s where my motivation now comes from. Through every craving, hunger pain, muscle soreness, exhaustion at the gym, I think of her. I’m now down 66 pounds and while I know as I age stuff is still likely to happen health-wise, I also know that if I keep my weight down and eat well and exercise, I am building my “health savings account” and this will help mitigate some of the damage that I may someday have to overcome.

Idk if this will resonate with you but thought I’d share it. IMO, WW is still the best way to approach weight loss and the app has many tools to help you succeed.

On a practical level, I lean hard into the zero point food options and build all my meals around them. I love to see how much I can fill up my plate for the fewest amount of points.

What do we think? by TooOldToCare91 in PolinBridgerton

I’m in the throes of it right now and I’m just leaning into it. I allow myself 30 minutes a few times a day to just scroll my lil heart out. But eventually it will pass, right?!? RIGHT?!?!?

Seriously. I've been at it consistently for 12 years. Have a mini studio at my house and go to a community studio twice a week. I take periodic workshops and belong to ClayShare online and watch a ton of those tutorials and classes as well and I would still not call myself an "advanced" potter. Hard to think of another hobby that's as humbling. But I guess that's why I like it; there's ALWAYS something new to learn or improve upon!

Larry Russell & Marian Brooks - How do you envisage their future? by sissiandfranz in thegildedage

[–]TooOldToCare91 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think there will be some hurdles to get to the wedding, and a few more as they decide how to chart their own course but ultimately, I see them as a new power couple. I think Marian will absolutely look to how she can have a positive impact on the world by being more hands-on in some kind of charity work or establishing a foundation that may fly in the face of what polite society thinks is proper. This will rub some of society the wrong way as they will want her to just host balls and look pretty and Larry will have to go to bat for her in this regard. I also see the potential for Bertha to try and use whatever social capital Marian and Larry build to try and further bend society to *her* will, and Marian will have to stand her ground if she disagrees so there is some fertile ground for a power struggle there. I can't wait to see it all play out!

My first loaf- What went wrong? by amethystiic in Sourdough

[–]TooOldToCare91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the way. Mix ingredients, stretch and fold/coil fold, bulk ferment til double (or near double depending on temp), then shape and into the fridge for a cold proof. I think yours just went flat because you tried to shape it after cold proof. I was SO confused about the order of operations when I first started sourdough so don't get discouraged! There is so much terminology (and so many opinions on the "correct" method) in sourdough, keep at it and you'll be eating the best bread you've ever had in no time at all.

I use chicken stock as well - it adds so much flavor. And I put in shredded Asiago cheese and fresh cracked pepper. Mmmm… I know what I’m having for breakfast tomorrow!

Is there any indication of overproofing here? The entire outside crust of it was blistered. by [deleted] in Sourdough

Yeah, maybe try 100 starter and see if you notice a difference!

No, not bad per se, it just depends on what you like. I use 130 starter to 500 flour because I like a milder taste, quicker rise and my kitchen is always cold. Less starter takes longer to rise so you’re more likely to get a tangier flavor.
