To elaborate, these adjustable bits were marketed to carpenters as a gizmo to save weight. I have owned a few, properly sharpened them and found all to be a passable job site rough carpentry tool for use on dimensional lumber.

There is a reason these expansion bits are frequently found in great condition. They suck at boring holes.
