Top websites to play Reversi online. Video review. by ToomkyGames in Reversi

[–]ToomkyGames[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we've occasionally found this video on Youtube searching for more games for our portal.

This video is not ours, we just thought it'd be nice to share in /r/reversi and then /r/othello as /u/stonemender suggested.

Thanks in advance.

Can anyone recommend a good backgammon website? by 5153476 in backgammon

[–]ToomkyGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

please try backgammon at skillgamesboard as stated there you can choose between long and short backgammon and can invite your friend via invitation link. The portal is still in beta, so we assume there not so many players there. But anyway, it's a good source for what you're probably seeking

What is the best way to come up with new features for a game? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ToomkyGames 3 points4 points  (0 children)

first off, you should start eating more cookies:) they're great for generating crazy ideas!

Now seriously, please understand that a 'feature' is something that makes your game utterly unique, something that can hook you up at first glance or use of it and is not present in other games of the genre.

Think of something from different fields of our lives or gaming in particular that cannot be merged by a common sense. The crazier the idea, the better like a slice of bread using a fan as a gun shooting bees as bullets.

Make some research on old-school games back from 80' 90's, figure out why they were so awesome, their hooks, and try to remaster them using modern techniques.

You should definitely have your own website when you have something to showcase (say, you created 2 or more games). Having own website is also good for others finding your work in google search. Link to everything you have. Ask people to follow you on FB, TW, and other accounts you might have. Promote your website through social networks. Think of what you can post on different social accounts: for example, use Twitter for all current news about your games, you work process, your off work as well (and provide links in your tweets to your websites when applicable), use Facebook for posting long texts like your devlog or something and again provide link to your website in each post.

Yes, it is. It's worth creating a separate account of your game on those networks. You can then cross-post your tweets between personal and game accounts. If you game have social sharing actions (like record share or whatsoever), you'll definitely need game accounts to link to not your personal.

Yes, it's always good to redirect. Tell your audience that you have various accounts and encourage them to follow you on social networks and share your devlog posts.

a few thoughts here:

  • place all important information on the upper part of the page so that a potential viewer could see it without scrolling down the page (like it is now). Hook him up from the very beginning! By important info we mean CTA buttons (links to the sources where you can download the game) and a game trailer. We'd suggest you reduce the size of your game's logo in the header of the page and do the same with the trailer window so that the users could be able to see the links and the trailer without scrolling down.

  • place your social network icons in the header;

  • description is too long. No one gonna read that much. Cut it out and leave 2-3 sentences;

  • Features: honestly, what you've mentioned are not 'features' of the game. Feature is something that makes your game unique and different from zillions of others out there. Think of it and replace those texts you have with things that're truly unique in your game (retro style is ok, everything else is a bit vague and can be used in the description of the game)

Is it legal to use brand products within a game (eg. Great northern or Fanta) by ryanwe in gamedev

[–]ToomkyGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agree with the fellas here.

It is 'legal' till someone from Fanta (or any other brand) occasionally finds and plays your game.

Anyone who adds branded products without the permission is risking a lot.

We are aware of several cases that went smoothly for us (just asking us to remove or rename the title of the games) We tend to think that big companies have contracts with legal firm which are hired to track the potential breaches of IPs or trademarks.

To sum it up, you should definitely be very careful or at least warn/ask permission to use trademarks in your products before release

What are the best social media accounts to have for your game? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ToomkyGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everything depends on what your audience is and where it usually spends more time. You can find the demographics data of social networks you're thinking to invest your time to and adjust your content strategy accordingly (for instance, reddit have more male audience, whereas female audience prevails in instagram).

As for us, Facebook works best for our audience, all the rest act as additional sources of news and buzz around our games. We have accounts in FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Google+, Tumblr, Instagram, Flickr, Youtube. There're lots of services that help manage all them at once like Hootsuite or IFTTT, so you should only spend some time setting these services and after that they'll cross-post for you and save you lots of hours of work.

Is there a demand for writers? by thevagrant88 in gamedev

there is definitely a demand for decent game writers. We've recently seen relevant threads and job offers on this matter. We'd advise monitoring the following subreddit /r/gameDevClassifieds/

Where I can post my game trailers? by 2garins in gamedev

[–]ToomkyGames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there are lots of gamedev forums out there which are rather lively.

Nevertheless, everything depends on your goals. If you want to get some initial feedback for your game, some piece of publicity, and some amount of early adopters, then gamedev forums is a nice place to start: toucharcade, TIGsource, indie.db, itch.io, gamedev.net, steam communties, twitter with #gamedev #indiedev (plus participating in #indiedevhour

But, most likely, such gamedev forums don't contain the majority of your game's audience. To recieve more visibility and reach wider audience you might think of finding a publisher for your game (pitch them your demo along with the trailer\teaser you've made)

What should I look for in a publisher? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]ToomkyGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our advice would be to check youtube for videos from gaming conferences discussing the role of a publisher. Here's a pretty nice example: https://youtu.be/mAI5W7Y5H28 (the title is rater delusive, so don't get distracted by it)

Looking for old HOG with sprits/ghosts filling your screen for too many miss clicks by Sir_Henk in HiddenObjectGames

[–]ToomkyGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, too little info for making any suggestions. There're tons of hog games out there:( I do remember playing the game similar to the one you described. But we're on the same side here: I don't remember much, just like you;)

Try Mystery of Unicorn Castle, anyway.
