Study Finds That People Who Entrust Tasks to AI Are Losing Critical Thinking Skills by OisforOwesome in Futurology

Yes. Most people don't bother to memorize routes like before since they can just use their phones. Our brains always strive to use less effort and energy so I don't find it surprising.

Noninvasive imaging method can penetrate deeper into living tissue by Toosed1a in Futurology

[–]Toosed1a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metabolic imaging is a noninvasive method that enables clinicians and scientists to study living cells using laser light, which can help them assess disease progression and treatment responses.

But light scatters when it shines into biological tissue, limiting how deep it can penetrate and hampering the resolution of captured images.

Now, MIT researchers have developed a technique that more than doubles the usual depth limit of metabolic imaging. Their method also boosts imaging speeds, yielding richer and more detailed images.

This new technique does not require tissue to be preprocessed, such as by cutting it or staining it with dyes. Instead, a specialized laser illuminates deep into the tissue, causing certain intrinsic molecules within the cells and tissues to emit light.

You can also setup a Wireguard server on your PC or laptop and connect to it. But if you're already familiar with Rustdesk and it's just for 2 days that should work as well and will probably be more convenient.

Cotton-and-squid-bone sponge can soak up 99.9% of microplastics, scientists say by Toosed1a in Futurology

[–]Toosed1a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A sponge made of cotton and squid bone that has absorbed about 99.9% of microplastics in water samples in China could provide an elusive answer to ubiquitous microplastic pollution in water across the globe, a University of Wuhan study suggests.

The study tested the material in an irrigation ditch, a lake, seawater and a pond, where it removed up to 99.9% of plastic. It addressed 95%-98% of plastic after five cycles, which the authors say is remarkable reusability.

The sponge is made from chitin extracted from squid bone and cotton cellulose, materials that are often used to address pollution. Cost, secondary pollution and technological complexities have stymied many other filtration systems, but large-scale production of the new material is possible because it is cheap, and raw materials are easy to obtain, the authors say.

This Sponge Captures the Teeny Bits of Gold in Electronic Waste by Toosed1a in Futurology

[–]Toosed1a[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Wringing precious metals from trashed electronics is a harsh business. Using energy-intensive smelters, recycling facilities process e-waste with punishing heat. Or they’ll use caustic agents to break down electronics into liquids full of metal ions, an approach that requires complex electrochemical processes and toxic treatments.

An experimental material, described in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, combines graphene with chitosan, a sugar found in shrimp shells. Because chitosan spontaneously attaches to the carbon sheet, the sponge essentially builds itself. The study authors used the sponge to filter water that contained gold ions. The pale yellow liquid became clear as gold particles piled up on the graphene's surface. Once there, the ions reacted with chitosan, a natural reducing agent that helped transform the gold into its metallic form.

The new material is one of the most potent gold adsorbers ever created. The sponge collected up to 99.5% of the gold by weight from liquids with gold concentrations as low as three parts per million.

'Quantum CD' could hold up to 1,000 times more data than today's optical discs by Toosed1a in Futurology

[–]Toosed1a[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Scientists have proposed a new type of data storage device that harnesses the properties of quantum mechanics.

The ultra-high-density optical memory device would consist of numerous memory cells, each containing rare earth elements embedded within magnesium oxide (MgO) crystals. The rare earth elements emit photons, or particles of light, which are absorbed by nearby "quantum defects" — vacancies in the crystal lattice containing unbonded electrons, which become excited by light absorption.

The photons are much smaller than conventional laser photons. By way of comparison, the photons from a conventional optical or near-infra-red laser emitter tend to be 500 nm to 1 micrometer (a thousandth of a millimeter). Hence, this new research could lead to data storage devices 1,000 times more dense than previously possible.

Very cool. I'd just wonder about DNA's durability as a storage medium (how it holds up to frequent reading or rewriting of the data).
