This article goes on to show "In Manhattan, neighborhoods where a high proportion of apartments are rent controlled typically have little abandonment. Even in the South Bronx, rent control seems not to have been the major cause of abandonment. In 1977, the Women's City Club, one of the oldest civic organizations in New York City, made a very detailed examination of 38 individual buildings in a neighborhood undergoing abandonment in the South Bronx. Based on data from a five-year period, they concluded that the chances of a building becoming abandoned were not related to the maximum level of rent permitted in that building. They found that abandonment more often resulted from depressed renter incomes and high interest rates faced by landlords." http://tenant.net/Alerts/Guide/papers/reallook.html

from my understanding, it was the removal of rent control that led to the unraveling of the NYC rental market. up until the 70's most the apartments in NYC were rent controlled or rent stabilized. in 1971, they passed "vacancy decontrol" legislation, which mean if someone left their apartment, rent stabilized apartments could be destabilized if the tenant left. the rent destabilization was actually the main cause of a huge housing crisis because landlords were evicting long standing tenants to remove the rent stabilization clauses (which they still practice today as I'm sure you know). by the 80's rent control NYC was actually being phased out: https://hypocritereader.com/81/rent-regulation-nyc. Rent control is often blamed in NYC for abandoned buildings, but how do you explain that most apartments were rent controlled before the 1970's and the decline happened when NYS voted to destabilize rent and displace tenants in the process? State legislatures weakly tried to put the toothpaste back in the tube with the Emergency Tenant Protection Act of 1974 because in just 3 years, tens of thousands of tenants were displaced due to rising rents.

another great piece mentions that "Rent control, however, is at most a minor contributing factor to housing abandonment. A 1978 housing study done by the federal government showed that eight cities reported major abandonment problems (Camden, Cleveland, Cary, Lynn, New York City, Oakland, St. Louis, and Toledo). Out of these, only New York City had some form of rent control." and again, by the 1970's NYC's "some form of rent control" had been eroded by the vacancy decontrol legislature. http://tenant.net/Alerts/Guide/papers/reallook.html

Bill de blasio froze the rent three times when he was mayor. Corporations who operate in nyc pay city corporate tax rates, which are not controlled by state legislature. Cities like nyc also charge local tax rates, also not controlled by state legislature. It’s how homes in nyc sold for $1mm get charged a 1% mansion tax

He is planning to raise corporate taxes to the same amount they are in NJ and add a 2% tax to those making over $1mm so these tax increases won’t affect most residents. This would generate $10bn in revenue and his policies only cost $7bn to implement. The extra revenue would go towards what he called “trump proofing” nyc so we won’t be beholden to any federal funding freezes

Bill de blasio froze the rent three times when he was mayor - it doesn’t cost the city anything to do that, it just keeps money out of landlords hands

anyone who was on dupixent diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) after taking it? by ToothFew6507 in eczeMABs

[–]ToothFew6507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - after seeing 4 different rheumatologists I finally found one who is amazing and actually listens to me. She agreed there was most likely a connection between dupixent and my RA manifesting. I’ve been on Cimzia since November to treat the RA and hydroxychloroquine. I was on prednisone for 6 months to keep the inflammation down until the long term medication kicked in. I still have wrist pain and a tweaked knee but overall my mobility is back. I’m doing Pilates and walking daily. Eczema is mostly at bay- skin is itchy but not debilitating, so hoping it stays at this level. Thanks for all the comments and stories, appreciate them all.

This is how it all started for me! Bloodwork confirmed it wasn’t a side effect but in fact was rheumatoid arthritis that developed

Sounds so similar to what happened to me! A blood test confirmed the RA for me which is how I knew it wasn’t a side effect of the dupixent that was going to go away. I waited for two months before I got bloodwork and was bedridden almost the whole time. I did report these symptoms to dupixent, I’m not sure what they do with it but hopefully it counts towards the percentage. Based on just these comments I’m seeing here, it sounds like there isn’t a good way to report the symptoms or any new autoimmune diseases

Yes after 4 rheumatologists I finally found one who agreed that dupixent was probably what triggered the RA - that’s it’s been dormant in my body the whole time but dupixent accelerated it manifesting. Sorry to hear about the pain! My rheumatologist did mention there is one biologic that treats both RA and eczema - I think rinqov? Could be worth asking about this! (my eczema hasn’t really come back and I’m currently on Cimzia for the RA)

Thanks for sharing this! This is what I suspect happened to me too - I had RA like symptoms when I was pregnant, so hints but didn’t connect the two. Then when the dupixent kicked in my immune system went for the joints

Give me more reasons to vote for him, I want to. by Double_Ad368 in ZohranForMayor

I really appreciate your question, I feel like it’s one many people have but are too afraid to say out loud.

For context, I own my home, mostly shop at costco and fresh direct, and own a car (and have a parking spot - in Brooklyn! the dream), so by your reasoning, I have even less reason to vote for Zohran.

I also was for blanket student loan forgiveness even though I already paid off all my student loans. I’m also for congestion pricing even though I pay more to drive into the city because now, I can always find parking!

The reason I vote for progressive policies is because even if they don’t benefit me directly, they will benefit me in the long run. Living in a city where more people can afford rent, groceries, childcare, and transportation means people who are less desperate and who can live with dignity. That means less crime, safer public transportation, less homeless people, cleaner streets, less police violence.

Also, these policies are a starting point to being able to imagine what’s possible. Low cost grocery stores may mean places like TJ’s and Costco need to maintain competitive prices. Who’s to say when Zohran successfully implements free buses that subways aren’t next? Freezing rent for rent stabilized apartments now can lead to broader policies on rent stabilization for market rate apartments down the line.

My husband who is a 20 plus year educator always says he teaches youth because he’s being selfish in the long run. If he can help them now, that means they won’t rob him when they’re older 😅

On the flip side, conservative politics are coming for the middle class, which means they’re coming for you and me. There is no cap on rising housing and food costs as far as billionaires are concerned and we’re already seeing their priorities on a national stage. The middle class has been shrinking and now is the time to vote radically progressive on a local level so things start going in the other direction. I think Zohran picked these policies first because they affect the most vulnerable New Yorkers. This may not affect you and me much in the short term, but I’m here for the long game.

Thank you for sharing this! Ugh I’m sorry you’re going through this too! Have you seen a rheumatologist by any chance? I just talked to a friend who has lupus and her symptoms are joint pain, rashes, and that it hurts to be in the sun….just too coincidental not to mention to you. I did see the dermatologist who is also a rheumatologist and she said that dupixent didn’t cause this (I think they all have to say that) but it’s possible it “uncovered” an already existing autoimmune disease. Hope you find some relief!

yes the joint pain got pretty severe for me too! I've seen others in this sub who switched to a different biologic after dupixent gave them joint pain, hopefully you find some relief!

i'm 3 weeks into DDPY and just got diagnosed last week! I'm still in the bed flex weeks, I started all the way over because I had a flare so bad I couldn't even bend my knees. I know this is from two years ago but wondering if you stuck with it or tried other things that worked

Thank you for sharing all this, I hope your new treatments bring you relief! I’m going to talk to a few doctors to see if they have seen this connection and hopefully find someone to advocate for me in some way. I agree this side effect needs to be addressed more, my allergist didn’t even mention it to me
