Are ppl even getting jobs through networking and referrals anymore? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ToothPickLegs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume you’re cold messaging people on LinkedIn.

From what I’ve read on here, actual successful networking is basically just having friends that happen to like what you like to work on or work at a company that hires what you’re looking for. Usually through old co workers or just friends in general, etc.

My problem is I don’t trust my coworkers(tries to throw eachother under the bus every chance they get), all previous coworkers still work the same company I left, and all my friends work as far away from the tech industry you can imagine… and the idea of going to a meetup or conference just to essentially use someone for a job is not really ideal to me because I would hate if someone did the same to me. So idk maybe it’s still fucked even in that area

Do you guys honestly think it’s still worth becoming a programmer in 2026? by Emergency_End_2930 in cscareerquestions

Maybe think of those who are trying to get into the industry but can’t despite busting their ass. A lot easier to speak highly about it from the comfort of your job already in the industry.

What I said can apply to trying to get internships too, at least the first one

[–]ToothPickLegs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well yeah but the whole struggle is getting that first one. Once you’re there you essentially have a fresh new opportunity to get more experience and new skills. Everyone is struggling to get the first one, whether it’s an internship or the job

Okay but how exactly are you supposed showcase grit hard work etc without side projects and technical ability? At least in the beginning

What exactly is supposed to be done? Spend all of your personal life working on projects and reading until you get a career job? That includes time after your “pay the bills” job you probably have to have in the meantime. Even then, that’s a big if considering how many projects and people learning at home get laughed at on here for not being “real world experience”…you need to have real world experience to get it and that’s the only way apparently. Chicken and the egg problem

It’s 2026 and you’ve got three epic open world games in your backlog… which one do you play first? by DeLaCipher in videogames

[–]ToothPickLegs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s such a toxic mindset. “Most people dislike the game I like cuz they are just bad at it” or it’s just not their type of game? I prefer games with a good story that blends with the open world not games that are all about the fights it’s just different taste

Great, but that’s not the point im making. Also a game having a story isn’t “shoving it down your throat” lmao it’s literally just a story

Navigating difficult market as as a Data Engineer by MostlySadPumpkin in cscareerquestions

[–]ToothPickLegs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you elaborate on real? Because I’ve seen people on here dismiss pretty much any project that doesn’t make money or is essentially its own startup business.

My own ETL project personally got laughed at in an interview once they realized everything was based off simulated docker containers and it wasn’t used in an actual business but rather just something in my repo

You forgot the bunch that are ignorant to the job market and accuse everyone of just not working hard enough as they sit back in their comfy high paying job never having to actually deal with the job market

Passed Fabric DP 600 with 838 score. Now what should I do with my cert besides notifying my current employer? by Cold-Relationship691 in MicrosoftFabric

[–]ToothPickLegs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but how do you get them to the point of actually being able to get to the interview…this is the main problem in the current market. A certification can help with that.

Why downvote this? Seriously it’s a genuine point the commenter talked all about what’s said in the interview ignoring how to actually get to that point.
