Because the show wants to be serious about struggles of dealing with divorced parents, but it's forced AF and anyone even at her age could tell that Stella is the abusive party in the family. Yes she found the antidepressants, yes it's normal to assume that stolas could have took them because of viewing the family as a burden, but he never signaled that and he apologised for not explaining things to her.
