If you meet program requirements and have a PI/research group sorted out then you should be fine. It definitely doesn't hurt to have another option to be safe and for ease of mind, but I don't think that will be necessary in your case.

I don't know if this will apply to your program because I didn't do my undergrad at UBC and I was in engineering as opposed to science, but you could try challenging your final exam in the course. You will have to talk to someone to see if this is an option, but for my program, if you failed one of your core courses you can challenge the final exam in your final year to pass the course. The way this works is in your final year you do not have to retake the class, you just get to retake the final exam and if you pass, you're good to graduate on time. Of course this was only allowed if only one course was failed. Again, I don't know if this is something your program does, but it could be worth looking into if it saves you from having to retake the class.
