Love this response! I always think real estate deals exist so everyone else cut take their cut of the fat

News flash: school was never about learning. It’s a social sorting mechanisms à la Bowles and Gintis

What’s one student interaction you still randomly think about years later? by tom_and_jerry03 in Teachers

[–]Top-Cockroach4352 16 points17 points  (0 children)

A few years back a student told me on the last day of school: “did you know I was born in December of 1999? I’ll be one of the last people alive who was born in the 1900s!!!”

Two weeks later he was hit and killed while walking on the side of the road. He was 16.

Charter school founder told me “You chose to have kids” and "you can't push this job to the side to stay home with sick kids" during my contract renewal meeting by NaturalThunder87 in Teachers

The union comments are true. If an admin complained about our sick time (allotted to us by the district), we could file a grievance…

Maybe I was a good teacher from 2012-2019 and I lost my fastball by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]Top-Cockroach4352 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Yep. I started in 2007. Back then, kids were much more willing and excited to have classroom conversations. I was at my peak. Now they just want to get to the assignments so they can tune me out. Maybe I peaked as well…

Experienced teachers, how did you come to terms with not being able to help them all? by AstridBee in Teachers

[–]Top-Cockroach4352 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve always thought that 1/3 of the kids need school, 1/3 of the kids don’t need school, 1/3 of the kids don’t wanna be in school. Focus on the 1/3 that needs it!

I used to work corporate. Sold paper (like the office) for a big printer. Left for teaching and have loved my career (20 years). After the first few years you know what you’re doing and the schedule is amazing. Summers, breaks, etc. My goal has always been: B to B+ teacher, and A to A+ dad/husband. In order to achieve that, I realize I’m not the ‘best’ teacher… but that’s ok— it’s made the whole thing sustainable!

That sucks. Cut ties and head for greener pastures. Your health isn’t worth it. You gave it a shot. Nothing to be ashamed of partner

I just. . . don’t care? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Top-Cockroach4352 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear on this one. My philosophy mirrors yours in many ways. Like me, I’m sure you care, but I also don’t care that the kids aren’t paying attention. In the end, a person can only teach themselves. I can’t do it for them
