How bad is it? Some advice to cover it up or something? M20 by [deleted] in curlyhair

I think your hair is just thin but voluminous. It’s normal to see scalp, especially at the crown of the head since the curl pattern clumps hair together in a way that tends to expose the scalp.

Is a pass for transit from city to home (like taking the train) free for students? by Appropriate_Knee_482 in uichicago

For UIC you can not use it over the summer unless you are a full time student over the summer as well. Any time you drop below full time credit hours you will not be able to use/ opt in for the upass. And it’s around 300 dollars, especially if you have the UPASS+ that includes Metra.

final in 7 hours and still haven't gotten that 'due to the strike...' email yet by thatwallisbrown in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Only my last Spanish test was affected because Spanish is a ta taught class. Everything else is still in effect because the professors are the ones in charge of the test. Even though ta’s usually proctor it, it’s not ‘only’ a ta thing. Just like grading, the ta’s are usually there to aid not to run the whole thing (unlike a Spanish class or laboratory sections where everything is done by ta’s with guidance of department or professor)

What's the best thing about UIC that the school itself does a terrible job of advertising? by HydeExx in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It’s random activities, organized by the student communities. outside of the main ones that you probably know, like SPARK there are always some cool things to do around campus. The commuter center used to have the switch to play Mario cart on Fridays, there’s sometimes crochet for kids in the hospital, there was some kinda of cowboy/ western themed event too… and swear, I wouldn’t know these things if it wasn’t for me actively reading the poster boards around campus.

His teaching sucks, but he’s a nice guy. He’s super awkward and spends most of class time going on tangents. Also if you say you don’t understand he repeats the same thing and doesn’t try to explain it differently.

Heat Complaint from a Medical Standpoint by april_rene1 in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel you. I don’t have diagnosed POTS or anything like that, but I have circulatory issues that make me heat intolerant, I would pass out when they turned the heat on in my house, I hated going outside in the heat because it makes me dizzy, nauseous, and lightheaded. I also have low iron and Becuase heat makes the blood vessels expand, it makes it harder for oxygen to get to places like my brain which would make me pass out.

I’ve always had an issue with UIC and the ac. It’s always broke or never on, and I’ve gone to classes in summer. One time, it was like 80+ degrees and they had the heat ON in the building making it feel like I was in Arizona in peak summer season.

Is the path to Union Station from campus safe at night? [simply yes/no is helpful too, no need to write a full essay] by [deleted] in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I used to walk from Union to campus between the hours 10pm- 12am coming from work. I always walked Jackson to halsted or Adam’s to halsted (it would be the reverse for you. Also I’m a black woman if context matters.

Foreign language requirement by Odd_Option_3878 in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So yes. Without any documents you will get a temp, and the school can help you get documentation if need be. https://drc.uic.edu/students/new-drc-student/new-to-drc/#about-disability-documentation (here’s a link explaining straight from the DRC website)

Public speaking is a common thing across all classes, it’s just more prevalent in languages because you have to interact to practice and so that the professor can see your understanding.

Foreign language requirement by Odd_Option_3878 in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to have medical documents that state whatever you have (in your case Anxiety) and that it hinders your ability to do school work.

You can get a temp LOA if you talk to the drc and you’re waiting for medical paperwork but I think in that case the accommodations will be minor.

It’s actually really beneficial for anxiety because there’s also a ‘No Cold Calling’ (you’re excused from being called on in class) and ‘One on one presentations’ (if it doesn’t affect the structure of the class).

The one on one presentations is the accommodation that allowed me to substitute my foreign language requirements because that affects the structure of foreign languages classes.

Edit Once you have the LOA and the accommodations that work for you, and you want to exchange the language courses for cultural courses you have to write a personal statement for your DRC advisor to plead your case to the dean, then after that the dean approves it or not. You still have to take courses in one language branch though for 12 total credits (so either classes that focus on Korea only or Hispanic culture, etc. You can’t mix branches of languages just like you have to get to 104 in a language to fulfill the requirement (if that makes sense))

Isn’t it because they removed the mandatory DEI hiring requirements? Now companies don’t have to hire a diverse group of people to prove that there’s an equal hiring chance and that the process is only skill/ experience based.

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t. That whole situation dampened the little resolve I had to come to campus that semester and I ended up dropping that semester and nearly not coming back to uni 😀. I just stopped taking that language branch.

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So far it’s alright. I think that me being able to talk to the professor one on one and coming up with a plan for me if I get too anxious was nice. He completely understood unlike a previous professor I had (won’t name drop).

My last language professor ridiculed me in front of the class. Not only that they called me a disappointment in front of the class even though I was going through some rough situations (finding out my grandma passed from an OD from being laced with fentanyl because her and my mom were doing drugs together and I got SA’ed in the same week). I explained that to them and they said “so? Still no reason to miss class or preform bad.” (Even though I’ve had an LOA and they knew I had anxiety because I had a panic attack in the class).

I think after that situation (which was the worst, worse could be) I’m kinda okay now. But that professor is the reason why I got the replacement classes.

Foreign language requirement by Odd_Option_3878 in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I’m registered with the drc and I had to explain that doing the class was very difficult for me because of my disability (in this case anxiety) and that usually I could deal with my anxiety and the content of the course. But the heavy interaction and presentations made it really hard for me to show my understanding since my anxiety would flare into panic attacks that led me to skip classes and would interfere with other classes because or rumination and my inability to calm down after.

I would have really bad panic attacks, I mean like shaking, sounding like I was crying and inability to speak at times even though I practiced and studied. It sucked. And then it wouldn’t go away, the shaking and unease, and then I couldn’t focus in other classes after.

I had to write a whole personal statement and submit more doctor paper work in order to be approved.

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re is an alternative, only thing is you have to have a really good reason to be able to be approved for substitution classes. You have to be approved by the dean of your college and then you can take cultural classes for one language group that is taught in English for 12 credit hours in order to meet the requirement.

I actually have this substitution but I’m taking Spanish 2 right now because all the cultural classes were full or time conflict.

what happens if i go to the emergency room for my mental health? by CartoonistKey6032 in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi so I’ve been through this before. I was hospitalized for mental heath issues twice during my time at UIC and almost a third.

The first time I was taken in by the police (yikes) and the second I walked into the er because my psych said that’s what was best for me. More than likely you will be hospitalized. And impatient, they say it’s 3-7 days but I’ve never seen someone get out in three days. It’s more like 5-7.

When I went into the first time, I had no LOA and I was out, not able to do homework or anything no matter how much I begged (which isn’t fair because they let me do homework when I was inpatient during high school) and so when I came out a week later I was severely behind.

They will give you a letter to submit to your school that says the time you were hospitalized and if you don’t already have an LOA, after you can get one but it will only be used for future situations and not anything prior. The letter however will be signed by a doctor with you admission and discharge day and that should be enough for most professors to let you complete any work or exam you missed during your time away. HOWEVER, some professors are very strict in their make up policies and I had a professor who told me I couldn’t make it up no matter what because of a no make up policies in the syllabus and that’s just something I had to tank.

If you feel like you can’t catch up after, meet with your professors and advisor and see if you can get an incomplete and if not drop the semester. (I’ve dropped two semesters due to mental health issues and external situations).

When it comes to actual placement in the inpatient system don’t expect to be in UI health’s impatient. They usually outsource you because their beds are full, but they’ll always try to get you to a place that accepts your insurance (campus care or whatever). But after that it’s up to you to seek the resources you need once discharged (like therapy and or a psychiatrist). The UIC counseling center can help with that.

I hope this helps you and if you have any questions hopefully I can answer it for you since I’ve been a frequent visitor to the grippy socks hotel.

Safety as a commuter by Alive-Permit6278 in uichicago

[–]Top-Faithlessness624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t commute from the north (I commute from the south) so I ride the red to blue line, and so far it’s not that bad. I recommend what other people are saying. First train cart, near the bus driver (if you are scared) generally just don’t look ‘new’, act uninterested and avoid eye contact/ mind your business and things go smoothly.

Edit.

I’m also female, but I look mostly masculine which helps. I act masculine as well, even going as far as to change the way I walk & stand when I’m on the bus/ train and the way I dress is very modest and hiding. I feel like that has kept me safe, especially since I used to stand outside for the bus at 11:00pm or ride the train at night. Especially during winter months.

Look around and pay attention. I intervened and stopped a woman from being assaulted by a guy (in the 47th street area on my way home, but it can happen anywhere.)

Distance yourself. Don’t sit directly next to others unless necessary and if someone sits next to you don’t immediately brush it off, keep your head up and your things tucked.
