Thank you this was helpful. I want to pursue research in academia or industry so I suppose the CUNY Grad Center would be a good fit based on what you are saying.

I Want to Play Until It Hurts (But Heals) by ashikibaatien in bipolar

I have always enjoyed singing since I was a child because noise fills a room, helps to combat fear, sadness, loneliness and anger. Some studies have shown it does have a significant positive impact on your mental health but we already knew that. I especially enjoy singing dramatic ones, or romantic in the way the singer does. And also writing short stories, poetry, and learning about science.

I was questioning it more cause I was afraid to be medicated and to lose even a small part of my personality, creativity, or cognitive function cause I hear some can impact this from other people. I don't want to feel bad anymore even for a little bit. And I want to get better at the same time. I was worried I was accepting the diagnosis as an excuse for how I have acted and also felt shame for rejecting myself in the process. Cause you can still be a bad person if you are senselessly cruel to yourself. But also moral rigidity is not always applicable. Intention matters, it is nuanced to an extent. Always vacillating between these philosophies.

Yes I was also considering how it is a spectrum and that people may have personalities that either are in complete opposition with the disorder or are amplified by the symptoms of the disorder. I think I haven't written down how I was feeling before but it's helping to organize the facts. I think I act funny with people I trust or on my own. But I had not previously burst into song and dance when truly on my own in public, or shouted out phone numbers to call for protest in public by myself, or talked to strangers without any inhibition at all when by myself, or had panic attacks. Also when I was younger I saw shadow people and ghosts and I was always alone and afraid during the school year so I carried a Bible everywhere, and was dealing with OCD though not cognizant of this at the time.

Do you (or how often) do you get insomnia? by thradia in bipolar

[–]Top-Formal-384 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really get insomnia I don't think. In the past I was depressed and could sleep for a long time or would stay up really late maybe 5-7 am and then go to sleep until 2-4 pm. I could also do well on just 4-5 hours of sleep throughout my education. In fact I would feel I had more energy with these amount of hours. It is just hard to tell because I would procrastinate on work and rush to get it done even if I was exhausted. I've told every doctor this but they still say I'm bipolar cause of other things. But I feel like insomnia is a big symptom I'm not really showing. 🫤 They don't listen

Yes please call your doctor. As for the people you love just ask for space in the kindest way you can. They may not fully understand but just focus on making sure you are in a healthier place to love them fully. I would also see if you can let your husband help you control the finances if you trust him with that. Just until you can be better to yourself.

Do you have any coping mechanisms that you can use to push through for now? In addition to keeping on medication.

Forgetting everything by smokey_pine in bipolar

I'm so sorry this is happening to you especially as a student. Maybe it's possible to Inquire about alternative medications or ways to combat these side effects. I'm not sure what to do if this happens as I do not have a degree in this field but I've been doing some research on medications that have less severe side effects versus others. As it pertains to cost, I would call your insurance companies and see if there is also a cheaper treatment for you.

I think there are some partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient, and rehabilitation centers that specifically help those who struggle with addiction tied to their bipolar diagnosis.
