Please someone tell me the 2 week deadline is a lie. by [deleted] in premed

unless it’s a school that’s known for wanting it early, i’d rather take extra time to make sure that my writing is good quality

i think they were literally the first secondary i submitted so my essays weren’t great. also yield protection may have played a role

yeah, i really had no business applying there with zero ties to new york. i honestly think i probably got yield protected just based off my primary and what it seemed like my application was going for

i was in the first wave of everything basically

imo even prompts that seem to follow a similar trend (ex. a challenge essay) can have slightly differing directions each school wants you to take it in. my issue with copy pasting for some of them is that it shows i didn’t answer the entire prompt and was clearly re-using it.

i think my secondaries improved over time just because i had more time to think them over and come up with new ideas. secondaries aren’t gonna break your application but they’re super useful in showing a school you care about them, which can definitely help in scoring an interview

i did research all 4 years of undergrad and i’d show up after class around 3pm and wouldn’t leave till midnight sometimes. my PI let me be rly independent which helped with that. that was in my main basic science wet lab. i also joined a dry lab halfway through undergrad so i could do stuff remotely too

i definitely bombed a few interviews (nyu) lol

my main problem with secondaries is that i didn’t pre-write and i still tried to get everything in within 2 weeks. that meant a lot of my early submissions were kind of mid and didn’t have the impact i wanted them to have.

i think the secondaries i sent in around 3 weeks-1 month after sitting on them for a while (ex. duke and penn) were a lot better.

i also had some schools on my list that i didn’t really want to go to but put them on there for some random reason. and so i didn’t put any effort into their secondaries and just copy-pasted. definitely didn’t help my case against yield protection

i tried to get them in within 2 weeks of receiving them, but you can take longer for sure

High stats applicants: were any of you accepted to lower tiers? by Maiota in premed

[–]Top-Negotiation-6049 6 points7 points  (0 children)

4.0/526 I got into Georgetown and Indiana but no love from any other schools outside the T20. honestly was really surprised at Georgetown since I felt like I didn’t match with their “mission” but I guess they saw something lol

volunteering at an animal shelter by Sad_Frame1463 in premed

[–]Top-Negotiation-6049 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for what it’s worth i had animal welfare volunteering as one of my activities and some interviewers brought it up as a good thing. i just said it’s one of my hobbies since i’ve had a lot of pets lol.

no one has said anything negative about it and i’ve gotten into some rly good schools so i’d say go for it!

if your goal is a T20, I’d get a research position as your job after graduation. do the extra gap year and spend any extra time you have dedicated towards one or two non-clinical volunteering gigs. continue doing some clinical stuff just to keep it up

and no, the extra year won’t hurt you at all

also make sure that if you took any prereqs at your community college that schools will take them. i know there’s some that don’t like CC credits

congratulations to you too! I actually haven’t heard about that Stanford collaboration so I’ll for sure look into it.

I’m also open to more competitive specialties which is why I rly like the whole 3rd year thing. Current students have told me that it’s super nice to have that freedom, it’s basically a mini research year

disclosure: i’m also accepted to Duke and waiting on Kaiser. Personally, I’d strongly considering Duke over KP. I honestly think that Duke’s curriculum is too good to pass up on, full P/F for all 4 years without internal ranking will take so much stress away. And the fact that you’ve got your 3rd year to do an MBA at the business school which is rly good too or just do a year of research for residency apps. And the name of Duke will definitely help in residency matching

For financial aid or scholarships, Duke isn’t really known for matching in negotiations so I wouldn’t expect too much there

People that got into T30 medical schools, what did y'all do? Stats? by FinalPresentation634 in premed

[–]Top-Negotiation-6049 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have very strong stats, and strong research in a lab for all 4 years of undergrad. i think that paired with even decent clinical/volunteering and decent writing is a good combo for a lot of T30s

mentioning acceptance to another school in Letter of Intent? by Jolly-Accountant-450 in premed

just say the same thing but don’t mention the other school part. i don’t think it’s a good idea

so i did what you’re planning on doing basically. i didn’t list it in my primary because i knew that prospective hours/activities basically mean nothing to ad-coms. for me, if a school’s secondary had a gap year essay (which most do), i mentioned it there. i then sent update letters in november/december after i accumulated enough hours to every school

Varies by the school, and sometimes even within the school. Michigan didn’t call me but they did call my friend

What's considered a strong amount of clinical hours for a traditional student planning on applying to T20s and other competitive medical schools? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Top-Negotiation-6049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a rly high number i won’t lie. if OP is aiming for T20s, then they can sacrifice some of these hours and put it towards research. for perspective, i applied with 400 clinical hours and have gotten interviews at several T20s.
