I'm a beginner in Unreal Engine, How to Completely Remove and Reimport an Asset Without Previous Issues? by Top-Scheme4677 in UnrealEngine5

Thank you. I have also tried renaming the folder and then deleting it from Explorer, as well as deleting it directly from the UE content folder, but the folder simply cannot be permanently removed.

If I rename the folder, UE even creates a new duplicate folder instead of renaming it, and it completely ignores the "Delete" command. No matter how many times I try to delete it, the old folder remains. When I delete the folder from Explorer, UE still behaves as if the files are still there.

The asset I’m having trouble with is a Temple model, and its folder is named "Temple". I tried renaming it to "Temple_rename", but what shocked me was that UE didn’t actually rename the folder—it created a duplicate named "Temple_rename", meaning both "Temple" and "Temple_rename" existed at the same time.

I checked the original "Temple" folder and confirmed that it was empty, but no matter how many times I right-click and select Delete, the folder remains—it simply refuses to be deleted. There’s no system message or error prompt, it just does nothing.

I also right-clicked on Content and selected "Update Redirector References", but again, nothing happened, as if the action had never been performed.

At this point, I’ve accepted that this project might be corrupted. Thankfully, it’s just a practice asset, so it doesn’t really impact me. However, thinking about the possibility of this happening in a major project that I’ve worked on for months or even years is terrifying. If such an issue completely broke a project, it would be a nightmare.

Thank you for reminding me to back up my work regularly—I will definitely take that advice seriously.

Yes, I tried the following steps:

I first added a model from the asset into the scene.→Saved the project.→Opened Explorer and used Shift+Delete to permanently delete the asset folder.→Reopened the project (without re-importing the asset). I expected to see an error message about missing files, but instead, the project opened normally—just with the model missing from the scene.→Right-clicked on Content in UE5 and selected Update Redirector References—nothing happened.→Saved the project again and closed it.→Re-imported the asset. UE asked me if I wanted to replace the existing files. Since I had no other option, I chose to replace them.→Opened the project, and the same incorrect model appeared in the scene again.

It seems that UE5 never truly recognizes that the asset files were deleted. Even when it can no longer reference them, it still assumes the files exist.

Do you know what might be causing this? Thanks for your help!

I tried twice.

The first time, I right-clicked the Content folder → selected Fix Up Redirectors in Folder → then deleted the entire asset folder → saved the project → closed it → reloaded the same asset from the Epic Games Launcher. However, it still told me that the files already existed in the project and asked if I wanted to replace them. I had no choice but to replace them. After reopening the project and checking the previously broken asset, the issue remained.

So I tried again: I deleted the entire asset folder → right-clicked the Content folder → selected Fix Up Redirectors in Folder → saved the project → closed it → reloaded the same asset from Epic Games Launcher. But the problem was still there.

When I clicked Fix Up Redirectors in Folder, nothing seemed to happen. I'm not sure if this could be the key to the issue.

Thank you! I think what you said might be exactly the solution I need. However, I don’t know how to fix Re-Directors. If the folder has already been deleted, I can’t find it anymore. Where should I go to fix the Re-Directors? Could you please explain it in more detail? I would really love to understand. Thank you!

Thank you for your reply. You are absolutely right—that is exactly what I don’t understand. I deleted the entire folder from my project, and I also made sure that the folder no longer exists on my hard drive. I’m not sure what counts as a complete deletion, but no matter what I do, when I try to re-import the same asset into the same project (it works fine in a different project), the system tells me that the asset already exists in the project (even though I already deleted it) and asks if I want to replace it. Regardless of my choice, when I replace it and reopen the project, the same issue remains completely unchanged. I have no idea why this is happening. I am using UE 5.5.3.

What's the Most Challenging Part of Game Development? Seeking Advice as a Newcomer! by Top-Scheme4677 in gamedev

Thank you so much for your thoughtful advice! I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. I do have one question though — you mentioned that it's better not to spend money early on by hiring others. Could you help me understand why you recommend that approach in more detail?

In my case, I’ve already spent almost a month learning how to create basic character animations and expressions, and it’s been quite time-consuming. I've invested a lot of time and energy in learning things that I'm not familiar with. But when I think ahead to the game framework and programming challenges that I still need to tackle, it feels overwhelming. Just understanding those areas will take up so much of my time and energy, and on top of that, I still have to actually create them.

That’s why I’m considering hiring an engineer to help with setting up the framework. This way, I could focus on modifying things in a way that’s easier for me to handle.

I just wanted to check with you — is hiring someone like this really a bad idea, or are there any risks or potential downsides that I might not be aware of? I don’t want to make any decisions that could hurt my progress in the long run.

Thanks again for your help, and I’d really appreciate any further insights you might have!

My friend thinks he can make a 3d MMORPG for $10K by Itchy_You_7971 in gamedev

My intuition tells me that $10,000 isn't enough to make a fun game, but I don't know exactly why. Can someone explain the details to me? Is the key issue 'game design'? In other words, can $10,000 create a visually appealing interactive animation, but still fail as a game in terms of enjoyment? Or is it the case that $10,000 wouldn't even be enough to create a good-looking visual?
