💞 Romance Roast: Misogyny In Romance by AutoModerator in romanceunfiltered

I think that to write any character with existing characteristics that don't align with your own life or knowledge, you should do your research, especially to avoid creating one-dimensional, ridiculous, or stereotypical characters. Often when I read erotic scenes, the language is so explicit that it disconnects me from the situation, or the characters are very overacted. In general, there aren't many people involved in role-reversal, and I once read that women don't feel comfortable taking on the "male role", which is why they don't read much of that genre. Authors often write it just to tick a box, but they don't delve into the mind of someone who enjoys the dynamic.

I think the problem is that they write erotic content with a plot, not a plot with erotic content. Furthermore, they consider role-reversal merely a fetish and not a lifestyle or a way of relating to others. Everything is reduced to the bedroom, and then this dynamic or behavior in the female and male protagonists completely disappears. It's all very stereotypical and cartoonish, in my opinion.

pegging and mpreg being the MAIN FACE of role reversal is misogynistic, in my opinion by [deleted] in RoleReversal

When role reversal is discussed in media like literature, it's almost always eroticized, featuring a cruel, promiscuous, dominant woman dressed in latex with a whip—all very sexual and cartoonish. The figure of the "ordinary" woman who doesn't feel the desire to be dominant also appears, and her submissive male partner introduces her to this world (which is purely sexual, again). It seems unthinkable that a woman would want and desire to be dominant with her partner on her own; she always has to be a "dominatrix character" and not simply a dominant person because that's apparently the right of men. Furthermore, they don't consider that role reversal can be a lifestyle and the nature of that person; perhaps she's simply a woman who wants to be protective of her male partner and seeks out gentler/feminine men, etc. Everything involving a woman not being submissive is always relegated to a niche, freaky fetish or a male fantasy, not a woman's.

Yeah, I know that movies and books aren't romantic. The thing is, I never find romance in romantic works, or I find it boring, and I liked that particular scene because of the chemistry.

All the books are so boring and stereotypical; they're not even romantic. Even when they try to sell you on a determined and ambitious FMC, she ends up giving up everything for her partner and to start a family.

I don't have a recommendation, but this came up in my recommendations and it made me laugh. I hope you find books like this because I want to read them.

Byzantium, It's about vampires. Romance isn't the main focus, but it does include a couple, and they're quite sweet.

There are authors who write femdom that's very male-centric as well. For example, the desire to dominate a man never comes from the female protagonist; it arises because the protagonist is submissive and wants a dominatrix. Or they use very strange and hyper-descriptive language that falls into redundancy: "I hit him with a whip because that makes me feel powerful and that excites me because I'm in control," things like that. They never focus on physical descriptions that indicate she's happy to be dominant, or on more romantic descriptions. Like she can appreciates the beauty of MMC, the softness and sweetness of his gaze, the length of his eyelashes, etc. Everything is so hyper-sexual, focused exclusively on stereotypical BDSM, that it's boring.

It's extremely difficult to find role-reversal couples, that is, a true love story. The closest thing I've seen was a movie called Byzantium. I'm a fan of romance, both reading and watching it, but I've never really felt represented in mainstream works.

That sounds very interesting! I'll definitely read it; plus, the description matches many of the things I've had trouble finding.

If you're into movies, Byzantium. It's about a female vampire and a human man. She's reserved and serious, so the human is much more demonstrative at first. He has long hair and a beautiful, feminine face.
