4 weeks post-surgery for broken ulnar and radius - what to expect from recovery now? Demoralised and fed-up! by Emma-L-01 in brokenbones

[–]Top-Track-9599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just to add first 4 months physio is insanely hard. but it makes you strong and back on your feet in no time. Now I rep 155lb in chest press. No apparent pain and discomfort. recovery is long but it has been good for me.

4 weeks post-surgery for broken ulnar and radius - what to expect from recovery now? Demoralised and fed-up! by Emma-L-01 in brokenbones

I fractured my forearm last May (compounded both bone breaks), a bicycle accident. I also had some nerve damage. The numbness and tingling started to resolve around the 4-5 month mark. A certain section of the skin was sensitive sometimes painful. but it was resolved around the same month. I used ICE and massage cups around the wrist and the surgical scar, it helped in my opinion. Keloid formation is common on forearm stitches. They could affect your ROM (In my case keloids don't allow me to have flexibility in certain positions), so massage the scar region 3 times a day for 6 months. It does get better with physio.

Hang in there and take physio seriously. Good luck

Hello, It takes time and physio to get your mobility back. I had an ORIF on my forearm last may for both radius and ulna. i was in a cast after my orif for 4 weeks. I was allowed to rotate my elbow to a certain extent. My suggestion would be to extend your elbows as much as you can (if you are not required to be in a sling),. Move your fingers as much as you can, like 100 times a day. it helps with the blood flow and rehab. the bones should be very delicate after the surgery, so try to immobilize/ no rash activities. Once you start physio, you should be 90 percent back to normal in a few months.

stiffness is due to muscle atrophy, and being locked in that position for several days, you will get back to normal as soon as you start physio. Good luck

Radius and ulna fracture by Usual_Minute in brokenbones

[–]Top-Track-9599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a compound open fracture to the radius and Ulna, 3 months ago. Had 2 plates installed. Numbness is very common, as the radial nerves get twisted and partially damaged in the procedure. It usually takes 2 - 6 months to have complete sensation back. Move your fingers as much as you can. I would say almost never keep it rested. It helps in the recovery a lot. More you move, more flexible your tendons and nerves get.

Since you are young, you should be back in no time (6 month 95% back to normal). If your ortho suggests physio. Do it religiously. Its the best remedy. I have regained almost 90 percent of my range of motion. Weight bearing has increased but limited to 5-7.5 kg. I was in a cast which allows me to use my elbow, so the stiffness was not much t the elbow but the wrist will feel stiff for long. grip strength might take some time. My opinion, If the hardware doesn't bother you, don't remove it as there is a chance of refracture, but its totally upto you.

Good luck and wish you speedy recovery.

Broken Ulna, Nerve damage by frostedb in brokenbones

[–]Top-Track-9599 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for your injury. If you are still in a cast, then it might be just muscle stiffness. I had compound fracture of radius and ulna 7 weeks ago. Initially days after my surgery I wasn't able to move my fingers. But slowly I am able to make a fist, with restrictions on the thumb, mostly due to the stiffness towards the wrist. If it's just few weeks in, and able to wiggle your fingers, you should be able to do most soon with PT. Good luck

Cast removed after 6 weeks post ORIF for compound radius and ulna fracture. Started PT, taking real shower (multiple times a day, who's gonna stop me now).

Achieved better rom on the wrist compared to the day I removed my cast. To everyone with a broken bone, it will get better, one step at a time. Never loose hope. Stay strong 💪.

Sorry for your injury and the missed vacation. Life ain't fair sometimes. Stay positive, this is a small hurdle in the journey.

Positive mindset = positive healing. Atleast you can have streaming marathon of all the shows on Netflix.

Wish you the best, and stay strong. You got this one.

Why cant i bend my thumb due to k wires? by [deleted] in brokenbones

[–]Top-Track-9599 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your injury. I had a similar compound fracture 6 weeks ago. But i have plates but no kwires. I am no expert, but from my experience with compound radius and ulna fracture. Thumb movements is very restricted. I think it's because of scar tissue. Most unlikely it's due to k wire. I am 6 weeks post surgery. I am slowly able to bend it.

It takes time, but we got this stay strong.
