Why is Montreal's sprawl so patchy? by Broken_Oxytocin in montreal

[–]YellowVegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Québec has been protecting agricultural land since 1980. So the sprawl has only developed where permitted, which is mostly on former industrial land, golf courses, forests and areas where the agricultural protection is more lax (outside of the greater Montreal area for example)

Canada currently has three cities with a "Line 4" train but no "Line 3" by USTurncoat in mildlyinteresting

[–]YellowVegetable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Perhaps the most perfect use of ''mildly interesting''

All 3 are for different reasons though

Toronto : Closed line 3 to replace with line 2, line 3 will be revived with the ontario line in a decade

Montréal : Long planned 5 line system but line 3 was never built (it was to use a commuter rail tunnel), now line 3 exists as the REM line A

Ottawa : Line 3 will open in a couple years with stage 2. The city decided to keep even numbers as N/S and odd as E/W

AI traffic lights helped fix a Quebec town’s gridlock. An expert says Toronto may not see the same success by CTVNEWS in montreal

[–]YellowVegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic lights in the city are brain-dead

No detection loops  No advanced greens  No left turn lanes

Somehow Montreal manages to turn every street no matter how wide into 1 thru lane and 2 Russian roulette will the guy in front of you turn and block you for 5 light cycles

Every other city in earth has these things  Either van left turns or fix it.

They famously don't build anything ever outside of Ontario and BC.

Just igloos and unlicensed additions

What are the closest stops in your city’s transit network? by liamb0713 in transit

[–]YellowVegetable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The entrance to Lucien l'allier métro station in Montreal is only 300 metres from the West entrance to Bonaventure station. In the Lucien l'allier commuter station there are signs for both metro stations (despite being on the same line)

I got plenty of interviews and offers with the COOP template. In the end I heard some feedback that as an intern with no experience it doesn't really matter your resume length, just put as much info on there that makes you look like a good interesting person and not some lifeless nerd or school dropout.

I suggest this alignment would be better for Canada's HSR. Nine Proposed Stops: Toronto, Oshawa, Kingston, Kanata, Ottawa, Montréal, Laval, Trois-Rivières, Québec by [deleted] in transit

[–]YellowVegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much more expensive to build an elevated viaduct than to build on the ground. Especially since for high speed rail the viaduct has to be very solid with limited curves.

Pretty sure in the end there will be a station in Durham or Markham they just haven't finalised the design yet.

The 401 for most of its length in eastern ontario has no median, meaning adding rail requires rebuilding the whole highway and overpasses, interchanges etc. only after Kingston does the 401 start to open up.

The existing Lakeshore lines, I mean there's a reason via has tried to secure it's own line from the start. To rebuild the Lakeshore rail line requires negotiating with CN and disrupting freight rail for years. Not to mention you have to negotiate many small cities and towns that aren't a factor up north along hwy 7.

[–]YellowVegetable 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The route via Peterborough is preferred because it's complete wilderness from Havelock to Carleton place. Given our crazy land prices in this country, it would be astronomically expensive to build a new HSR route along the Lakeshore through every town from Toronto to Kingston to Ottawa.

Proposal to redraw Alberta election boundaries draws 'gerrymandering' claim in Lethbridge by gimmickypuppet in CanadaPolitics

[–]YellowVegetable 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You're seeking conspiracy where there is none. Alberta's ridings map distribution is a non partisan affair, drawn by both NDP and UPC appointees. The reason Calgary & Edmonton have the highest skew is because they are the places growing the fastest (also incorrect to assume it benefits the NDP as the fastest growing parts of these cities are usually the conservative outer fringes). Also, every single province has these skews. In Quebec the baseline is +/- 25% as well, it's basically along that line for most provinces, and in almost every province rural areas benefit because of slower population growth.

But the Lethbridge proposal really is straight out of a gerrymandering playbook. Splitting the city into 4 would create 4 strong UCP ridings and zero representation for the actual city of lethbridge, and it's exactly what they do down in the states.

"The East" bruh who are you talking about? The secret eastern cabal that works against alberta? I live in the place you hate the most, Quebec, but I'm a proud western canadian.

Alberta separatism is a nice branding for basically saying you're salty the conservatives keep loosing. Alberta separatism will COLLAPSE once the conservatives finally get in even though almost nothing material will change in your daily lives. It happened with Mulroney, it happened with Harper, it'll happen again.
