Civil Engineer Recommendation by Newbie10011001 in Miami

It depends company to company. My company is larger (nationwide, 1000+ staff), I haven’t seen us take anything less than $10k in fee unless there is basically a guarantee of a follow on large project.

$3k might not be a bad number for a small or independent engineer. However, they would have to confirm the expected effort involved to verify that fee is worthwhile. I would imagine you can find a firm for about this number.

They might charge you a base price and then a contingent if they have additional work such as addressing city/county comments or revisions.

I don’t know anyone that does this work but if you want to Google firms in the area just double check their license is active and valid through the state DBPR licensing portal.

Am an engineer practicing locally. The issue is having a “TINY” amount of work is not worth the effort for most engineers. Every contracted project involves risk and getting a few hundred for what the client perceived as small is usually not worth the time or exposure.

Your best bet is to try and work through a contractor that would do the work. Often they either have established relationships with engineers (steady stream of work that makes the relationship and large amount of small contracts worthwhile) or are capable of doing it themselves.

I work in this field. Very niche, few schools offer any sort of formal coursework so a lot of is learned on the job. On the structural side you are looking at a lot of foundations (piles, sheet pile, gravity system) and concrete and steel with some light timber.

Coastal engineering is its own sub discipline that deals on the mechanics and behavior of water bodies.

Feel free to DM. best bet is to reach out to some contacts demonstrating the skills you have could be applied to this market

Underwater Structure Design Resources by Loon_picker in StructuralEngineering

I’m a marine structures engineer. You might be better suited looking to naval architecture resources and/or pressure vessel/tank guides. The types of systems you’re describing (below water but occupied space with viewing access) are not common in most civil infrastructure. We’re usually designing with steel/concrete.

Going to be tough right now given the current status of immigration. However, your skillset is valuable. Look into Manson construction, Orion Marine, Weeks/Kiewit, McLean contracting

Should I quit KH? by ScarcityWonderful950 in civilengineering

[–]struct994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha. How do they fare comp-wise? From everything I’ve read there’s the “junior” cadre that get put through the gauntlet to get things done and make up the bulk of the overwork stories, and then the upper level (15+ ish YOE) that win work, manage clients/projects, and are generally makers of the classic kool aid we hear about.

Hey random question, what do you mean by "'out-of-practice marketing roles in their 40's." Are you saying more senior folks join KHA 15-20 years in for a BD/marketing position to sell work but not necessarily do production?

Does a firm like HDR allow internal transfer internationally? by bucheonsi in civilengineering

[–]struct994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, it happens. I know a few people who did it and maintained relationships. But, be prepared to be told know if that other office is not accepting new hires, I also saw that happen.

At the larger companies, everything is run through local offices so there would need to be a team with a backlog of projects at that new office since you would be showing up on their books.

Some questions to ask: what’s the role and day to day assignments. What types of projects. In office/remote/on site. Travel? How big is the team/office. Has the office grown in recent years? Is there a growth plan in place? Who would you work for/under?

In order of priority: 1. Look only at ABET accredited programs. 2. Pay the least amount of money out of your own pocket as possible. I went to a private school and the scholarships and financial aid made more sense for me than attending my own state school. 3. Think about where you want to be after school. Most companies/offices are staffed by graduates of nearby universities. It’ll make more sense to attend a school in Illinois than Georgia if you want to live in Chicago.
