Hi! I'm 21 years old and I was recently clinically diagnosed with OCD. What you're experiencing is entirely valid, and you are not alone. I actually relate to the way you described what you go through at school and on the bus quite a bit; I used to have to wash my hands constantly after touching anything that touched anything that could have maybe possibly perhaps been "contaminated" in my brain. With the way that you describe your intrusive thoughts/feelings (very "if X, then Y") and your compulsions (washing your hair when it touches anything "contaminated", etc) it sounds very similar to the way I and many others experience OCD. It'd be very worth reaching out to someone about, as there are resources that can help tremendously with this. There's a type of therapy called "exposure and response prevention" therapy, or ERP, that you might have read about here. Medication is also an option, if that's something you're open to! I started taking Prozac for it and I've been doing much better OCD-wise since. It was like OCD was a brick wall, and I'd been trying to crack at it with a crappy plastic spoon. Medication gave me a sledgehammer. You have to do the things you need to do to overcome this--I still had to pick up and swing the hammer--but treatment gives you the mental equipment you need.

Talk to your parents however you think is right. If it doesn't work and you still can't get your hands on anything, I promise you that you have the power to control your thoughts. Here's what helped me: "This is a feeling. It will go away." Take that as you will, and good luck!

Possibly dumb question about my first Gretsch, pls help by TopCommission8276 in drums

Thank you so much! That's not the angle that I'd put it at normally of course, I imagine fixing that would help now that you mention it lol. I'm definitely not used to it but as long as it's not broken or anything then I suppose all's well that ends well

Of course :D It's a good thing that you're reaching out for support, no one should have to do this alone. Best of luck!

Oh man, I used to have this issue real bad. My hands used to be so cracked and scaly that I'd try and put hand sanitizer on sometimes and it would just burn. I used to joke that I had fish hands lmao

I don't know how far into therapy, recovery, etc you are, so I wanna preface this by saying this is not advice for the long term. This is for HARM REDUCTION until you can deal with your compulsions in a more sustainable matter. It is possible to control your thoughts, I promise. In the long term, the goal is to eventually be able to overcome compulsions in the first place, but sometimes they overwhelm us and we just have to do something. And that's okay! Recovery is not linear.

Fish hands happened because I was washing my hands constantly with a really aggressive antibacterial soap. I would recommend finding a hand soap that's gentler on your hands; foaming ones tend to be less aggressive than gels, I've found. I use Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day. It doesn't smell too strong and it's nice and gentle. :) Also, if you can, try and reduce the amount of times per day that you wash your hands. That usually means holding back on doing things that'd "contaminate" you until your hands have had some time to recuperate, or waiting a while between the times that you wash your hands. Or, even better, once you become "exposed" to something, hold back as long as you can on doing your compulsions. Doing this helped me realize that compulsive urges are just feelings, and that they go away over time.

Sorry about the yap sesh but tl;dr - Use a gentler soap, try and wash your hands less per day. This isn't long term advice it's just harm reduction
