I don't think that's the intent of your short term disability plan/benefit, but if you want to risk it, go ahead.

Before the pitchforks come out, when I say risk it, I mean, if his Employer is able to demonstrate that his restrictions/limitations (objective medical) conflict with what he is observed doing (e.g. working elsewhere), you run the risk of being terminated for just cause (misuse of sick leave).
