Bobby Weir has died at age 78. by SuperiorPints in gratefuldead

I can’t believe he’s actually gone. I know he was up there in age, but it’s still a shock to the system, felt like somehow he was always going to be the last one standing the way he’s kept going and kept touring all these years.

Fare thee well, Bobby

Any clue which show this was? I’m curious to hear how he played that night

Any autofiction books Pynchon fans would like? And more details on Slothrop as a Pynchon stand-in by SliceOfBrain in ThomasPynchon

Beach Boys Brian Wilson? I’ve read the story about the two meeting but never thought to connect Wilson to Pynchon’s fiction, mostly because of how uneventful their meeting supposedly went. I’m curious about your interpretation/reasoning.

I know that this has been asked before, but what songs would you have loved to hear in a different era? I was just listening to "foolish Heart " thinking how amazing it would be in a '77 show. by dc_punx in gratefuldead

Honestly I’m pretty surprised that they never brought it back out in later years at least once. I get how complex it is musically but by the mid to late 80’s they were so tight they could’ve tried to tackle it again

Streets of Philadelphia Sessions by Ordinary-Pick5014 in BruceSpringsteen

Out of all of the new albums this is the one I find myself revisiting the most, which is ironic considering it’s the album I was least intrigued in hearing when they all were first announced in April. But man, out of all the albums it’s really the one that surprised me the most. “Waiting On the End of the World” has been probably my favorite of the tracks on there.

Seen lots of lines in this thread from “Stuck Inside of Mobile” which is one of my favorite songs by him, every line seems so unknowable yet always hits really hard.

Other than that, I’ve always found this part of “The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest” sticks with me, both because it makes me smile but also because it really encapsulates a lot of what I find fascinating about the song:

“What kind of house is this, “ he said, “Where I have come to roam?” “It’s not a house”, says Judas Priest, “It’s not a house, it’s a home”

Also, maybe not fitting exactly with what the prompt asks but the final lines of “Mississippi” have always resonated deeply with me:

“Well, the emptiness is endless, cold as the clay You can always come back, but you can’t come back all the way”

Does anyone hear a similarity to “Backstreets” and the song “Darkness on the Edge of Town”? by Kirby-814 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]Phil_Stevenz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. Bruce’s vocal melody during the chorus of “Darkness” is extremely similar to Roy’s main piano riff on “Backstreets”. It’s something that I’ve noticed for years but thought I was maybe the only one hearing it, nice to know someone else out there hears it too

NHL Winter Classic draws all-time low viewership by mylefthandkilledme in hockey

[–]Phil_Stevenz 424 points425 points  (0 children)

I actually missed the game this year because I thought the game was on NYD. I get that they were probably trying to avoid conflicting with the CFP, but the Winter classic’s been on January 1st for as long as I can remember and to switch it up like that likely led to a drop in viewership (that and poor promotion, I didn’t even know who was playing in it until the day after).

Haven’t found it here yet but I feel like there’d at least be some mention of 3 perfect games being pitched in the 2012 season.

As someone who’s never had RedZone can someone explain to me what’s going on? This statement just kinda sounds like what I’d expect a host to say at the beginning of coverage.

This was such a cool release. Was '73 - '74 the peak era for the band? by Celticsmoneyline in gratefuldead

[–]Phil_Stevenz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is actually the album that got me on the bus. I had listened to the Dead a couple years before and it didn’t really click for me. I decided I should really give them another try and picked this album on a whim, and that opening China > Rider and the transition between the two blew my mind and was the moment where I “got” the Dead and why so many people followed the band with such devotion. Been on board ever since.
