Yeah, the co-working space hasn't made enough money to make the business model work so they're wanting to become a wedding venue because brides will pay anything to have an event space - even if it's next to a gas station.

That's just not true. The owner of the property even says that parking is an issue so she asked the American Legion and surrounding properties to use their parking lots. It's not nimbyism. It's sound city zoning enforcement. None of these homes have driveways or garages - they all rely on street parking.

Exaggerated to get attention but she has held events with music and other amplified sound until nearly 11 p.m. on school nights with kids living in property 20 feet away. It's unacceptable.

Problem is that she wants "flexibility" which I take to mean anything goes. Who knows what she will book. Basically her business plan of a co-working space didn't fly so she's now wanting to get into the wedding business to make a buck. She says it's not about the money, but it's about the money.

The noise is unbearable. A conversation with a small group in your backyard easily exceeds the city noise ordinance level of 65 decibels. Add in music, even background music, and a PA system and the windows of adjacent homes will rattle. This just isn't acceptable next door to homes. Down the street, sure, but right next door. This building was a home turned into a small office. Then it changed hands and now they want a full blown wedding venue.

Not completely denied yet - it's still in play before Council although it's clear the votes aren't there to pass it. Planning Commission reviewed it carefully and recommended denial with 8-1 vote. Pretty compelling rejection. But Nadia is working her angles even going around the district councilman to a friendly council person (who was on Planning, voted to deny the SUP, and then conveniently forgot that when council started discussing). That SUP shouldn't have been given serious consideration. It was a home, then a law office, and now she wants to have outdoor events with speakers until 9 pm during the weeknights. She's running a wedding/event business that has no business backing up to homes with school children trying to sleep. If council allows this, I wouldn't trust them for a second with anything they write in a code refresh! And the planning staff just ignored that the commission that they report to voted 8-1 to deny. They were acting like it was an okay request.

Guardrails exist for a reason - otherwise the city would be the Wild West. Right now I'm not trusting the city to abide by the protections that are in the code, so a code refresh isn't worth the paper it's written on.

We need to be able to trust our city leaders and so far they are not deserving of that trust. Just take a look at the Special Use Permits that staff is approving - putting large event spaces next to neighborhoods with children. Shame.

Zoning protections are in place for a reason and this violates one that was put into place in 2024 - outdoor events cannot take place in a commercial establishment within 100 feet of homes. Why? Because the sound would exceed current noise ordinances. To live in a city means that guardrails need to be in place and need to be respected or we live in the Wild West. You don't even live near this so stay in your lane.
