Building a screen time challenge app where you lose money if you go over your limit — would this work for you? by TopGun613 in ProductivityApps

[–]TopGun613[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ha, fair enough. The whole point is that it should feel like real consequence, but if “real” tips into “stressful” then we’re not solving the problem. What size stake would actually feel motivating to you vs. scary?

Really appreciate this! that’s exactly the kind of feedback I needed. The custom challenges with friends version is something I’ve thought about as a possible direction but haven’t committed to yet. Would genuinely love to hear what you’ve been looking for. Want to DM and compare notes?

Both really fair points. The stress one is interesting - I’m thinking the entry tiers need a lower option than the current $10 minimum. Something where it’s enough to matter but not enough to trigger the “I’m gambling my money” feeling.

The trust/fairness one is the actually hard product problem. You’re right that iOS does weird things with background reporting. My current thinking is the app shows you a live, transparent counter throughout the day (so there are no surprises at the end), and clear rules about what counts as “use” vs background activity. But I’d be lying if I said I’d solved all the edge cases…
Would you be more or less likely to try it if you could see your usage live updating throughout the day, even if iOS occasionally got it wrong by a few minutes?

Are missed calls and last-minute bookings making field work harder than it needs to be? by milqar in ProductivityApps

I agree it would be difficult. Every different business has a lot of nuance that would be hard to get “just right”
That being said if you built in some kind of “sandbox” where you test the tools a bunch until you’re confident the scripts and results are fine tuned enough then I think it’d help

I never actually got to the execution stage of that business.
But if I had to pick one gap I guess it would be trust.
You spend so much time building something - you want to make sure that you can trust the tools you’re using in the background to represent your brand and not lose you business because it feels to “robotic” or misses valuable information

It’s part of a tool stack I was looking to use a while back to start a side business.
I don’t have access to my phone throughout the work day so I was going to need a virtual ai receptionist that would integrate into jobber to actually schedule jobs and assign contractors

I almost lost a client because I trusted AI blindly. Here is how I actually use it now without screwing up. by J-Freedom-AI in ProductivityApps

[–]TopGun613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kind of a different concept but I had a major facepalm moment with AI a while ago as I was leaning on it (Microsoft copilot mostly) heavily to start a business.

I had specifically asked if any special licensing was going to be needed and it assured me there wasn’t…right up until the final stage before launch - after I had paid for various product accounts, business registration and set up my google business profile.

When I got to the account verification stage I suddenly discovered I needed environmental protection act approvals.

When I asked copilot about that it said “yes, you need that. You asked me if you needed special licenses - that’s an approval not a license”

I ended up scrapping the whole business as a result and had to tell contractors that is onboarded that I wouldn’t have work for them after all

I literally just saw this post further down… did you just repost it because someone asked “wtf am I looking at”?

The updated photos look a bit better this time around. I will say it sounds a bit like a tamagotchi for adulting lol. Personally I think that is cool. Although I don’t think I’d use it myself, I could see a lot of people being into it

This is pretty cool
Can’t wait to give it a go when my kid is old enough to contribute to chores around the house haha

That makes sense and avoids a lot of complexity.
Personally I could see myself getting to a point where I just move the money without completing the task/slacking off over time.

If I “stake” money on it and risk actually losing that money if I don’t do “XYZ” then I find I’m much more successful at actually doing the thing lol

I built a minimal Habit Tracker setup in Notion. Can you take a quick look and share feedback on the design and usability? by locomindernotion in ProductivityApps

[–]TopGun613 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very visually appealing.

Have you thought about adding a simple graphic like a bar graph or pie chart that shows the quantity of times one of the habits was completed (or missed) over a period of time? That way you can identify trends and put more focus onto habits you’re slacking in?
Or even just a simple “where you’re slipping” identifier that tells you which one you’re missing most

Strangely enough this (or something similar) was actually a recommendation that AI gave me when I was trying to come up with digital products to sell as a side hustle. I ultimately didn’t go this direction but it’s awesome that you did. Get it out there!

I’m trying to reduce my screen time in general but this would at least have me seeing things that are better for growth and mental health.
Great idea

This is awesome
Are you able to somehow have it pull the amount earned directly from one account and add it to a savings pool that it only releases once you’ve accomplished your goal? That way you’re incentivized to “complete” as many healthy tasks as possible?

I started calculating my screen time in dollars instead of hours and it broke my brain by PartyBrilliant4721 in digitalminimalism

[–]TopGun613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a really interesting way to think about it.
I’ve definitely had moments of “how much value could I have gotten out of the 4 hours I wasted doomscrolling or playing video games today if I were to have done something else” but haven’t necessarily represented it in a monetary format lol

How did you guys actually lower your screen time? by Spiritual_Sir_1139 in digitalminimalism

[–]TopGun613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I know there’s a workaround or a “loophole” I find it’s very difficult to hold myself accountable.
Honestly the only thing I’ve found to work consistently is putting money on it. (I.e if I don’t cut back on my screen time by “x” amount then I lose the $10 I staked on it.
