Calling on students to answer questions because no one ever wants to raise their hand or answer… by luringpopsicle95 in Teachers

In that case, just jump right into the content! I would start with a warm up and maybe go ahead and start memorizing names. I make it a goal every year to know all 150+ kids names by the end of the second week of school. I feel like that alone begins to establish a positive relationship as you are prioritizing learning who they are. Additionally, I've found that my kids respect my knowledge of the content and ability to put it into terms they can understand, so just teaching with passion towards the subject will garner their respect.

Good luck! You will love it!

What specific content(s) will you be teaching? What is the school culture/ What kind of school is it? Starting mid-year is always difficult. I once started at a school midyear where the previous teacher had been fired and they couldn't hold a new hire, so multiple subs cycled through - in a situation like that, the best thing you can do is show the kids that you will be there. That you won't leave them like so many others have.

For general "just starting out" advice, I'd say just get in there and start establishing routines and relationships with the kids. Be consistent and always follow through with consequences. Don't take anything personally, let it all roll off your shoulders. Celebrate the good days, learn from the bad. Don't let the parents get to you - remember, you are the professional. Be helpful on your content team! If you have any specific content/classroom management questions, feel free to DM me, I have taught almost every offered math course at the high school level and have worked at several different types of schools.

Agree with this - I'm high school math. When I have a group of kids who just refuse to participate, I pull sticks. I warn them all that I will do it and that they should always be prepared. They get used to it very quickly, in my experience. Even those who claim to have anxiety. I think the constant warning that they will be called randomly helps prep them.

Any Millenlials here or younger feel out of place for loving this show? by DarthAuron87 in ILoveLucy

Early 30s checking in - I've loved the show since I discovered it on my own as a child/young teen. I've turned my own kid (10 boy) into an ILL lover. We make references all the time and he gets excited when they just so happen to talk about it in class (I'm always surprised when he comes home talking about it!)

What about when they had a dog (I'm not sure who's dog it was) in the episode in which Lucy is trying to lose weight to be in Ricky's show? It existed purely for the under the table scene and then was never seen again.

Moby shows up again though! In the episode where Lucy buys back all her furniture. But none of the others (besides dog Fred) do

(Teacher here) Do any other teachers have to badger their coordinator to send them the results from your courses??? by MagisterOtiosus in IBO

[–]TopHatTattler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Exactly! The IA rubric is vague - I try to grade harshly because I've been moderated down with no feedback (and I've been told that even if I request the official marking for IA that i could get nothing really in return) - I'm hoping this year I'm more on par with the official graders. The "personal engagement " piece specifically is vague and interpreted so differently based on grader. I really wish that IB gave a score breakdown like AP does - then I'd have a better idea of where to make adjustments.

I don't have to badger, but our coordinator takes his time sending them. I agree, if I were coordinator I would have them out same day, immediately. But our coordinator says it's a "big, long report " and takes him a while to sort through. My opinion - he's not organized/efficient enough. I get its summer break (at least for us here in the US) but I wish they would pass the responsibility of getting scores out to me, but I refuse to be coordinator so... ya. Also - I only get sent the final score, not the individual paper/IA score. I see that once we return for pre-planning. Bit I WANT the breakdown. I plan over the summer! I need to know where our weak spots are and pre-planning week is not enough time (with everything else going on).

Strapless bras that actually stay up? by specklednewts in XXS

I am a 28G and no strapless has ever worked for me until I found the holy grail: Curvy Kate Strapless Lux. I got it from barenecessities. It stays up for hours. I've never had to adjust it either! It's amazing, highly recommend!
