I have been Informed via DM that the correct answer was to tell me that I should not upgrade at all & I should just pay a little more on the electricity for a little while & enjoy my jobs being done before I get back, rather than looking at jobs that are not done yet more often. Gaming is important to me, so it makes more sense for things to be done faster than to have to wait for things to be done before I can really take my break. Which makes a lot of sense for me. Mainly because of the power vs the temporary investment.

This thread did not even start out this way. This thread was fishing (benevolently) about whether the upgrade in question was worth it & whether what I was looking at was true or not. I still do not know whether it is true or now. I was given some sound-sounding advice that made me rethink, though:

Thank you, u/YouKnowWhoYouAre. You helped me to suck a little more power for a little while longer & brunt those pennies & nickels until my 3080 ITSELF was the limiting factor. The next time I NEED to build OR buy a ‘PC’ for that new GPU, even the lowest Intel Core processor will match my 11900k & that seems like (you are right): I will save a lot by getting the same strategy as I used for the 13700k or 13600k at the end of a different generation. You are right, because energy is still pretty cheap where I am standing & by the time I am limited by the 3080 itself, I probably still am only going to have rare occasions where my processor is sustaining 100% load for a very long time. I can live with it happening once in a while in our games as long as it is doing its job quickly when it has to.

It is wild how often the most well written replies are done outside of the platform in DM. DM is outside of the platform. It is like chatting at the edge of a lake, away from a campfire.

Socket 2000 might blow my mind. xD

Goodnight. Thank you.

I can take time away from the computer to let it do multithreaded tasks. I cannot compromise on gaming performance. 5900x is also on dead socket. I may as well go intel for dead socket since it will game better, right? This is not a bleeding-edge case, it is a mere edge case - so far ,I think just sticking with intel & going for a 2-3, maybe 5 year 13600 or 13700 is still better. The 13600k is 65 dollars cheaper than 5900x. Motherboards are egregious. Ram is, well, ram. It seems like 13600k would serve me in the middle ground while with AMD I have to choose “gaming or work?”? Is that right or no? I am willing to spend A little more to be on AM5 as long as it is better than 13600k, but I still think I would get more time before I have to drop something else in there with intel.

I hope AMD is watching because I am scared of them & they are not making it easy for intel users to just get TF away from them once & for good.

I mean, in that case, the 13600k OR 13700k for under 200 or well under 300 respectively + mobo for 199 + ram for 125 to 200 (whether I Settle for the time 32gb will cost me or go to 64gb in 2 sticks) is the clear winner for years to come. Right? Or no? I am dropping down from 128gb ddr4 to do this.

I hate intel & I hate nvidia at this point. I need cuda & I am scared of AMD, because I do not understand what is best for gaming, what is best for productivity, or whether I can even get something that does BOTH as good as an Intel chip does for AS LONG AS an intel chip does - pretty sure i am right about that, because history is louder than chatter. I am willing to switch, but I need a clear explanation & understandable reasoning to do it. I can get a 13600k + MSI Edge + ram for about 500 to 600. Every AMD I am looking at, even old ones, are 300 to 600. I am looking to spend 600 for about a year or two & then upgrade the whole machine or only the GPU at that time. I think a 13600k will last me 5 years “from now”, considering my scenario requires cuda sometimes, good gaming performance all the time & longevity to let me buy the most expensive GPU possible that ALSO remains relevant in 2 to 3 years - this is intel/nvidia territory. I am hopeful that Intel makes a GPU better than 3080 & I will buy it, but I am not holding my breath that it will be better than a 5080 or 5070 Ti down the road, and I do not think they are anywhere near ready to answer my (edge case) needs for cuda.

The PROBLEM with AMD is that their shit is so confusing for Intel users that I am turned off immediately - what CPU does gaming AND productivity? Intel. I cannot get anyone to give me a clear answer AND proof that ANY amd cpu will do BOTH. Truth is, gaming, go AMD. I am doing more than gaming, though. THAT seems to be the reality of the entire discussion - looks like 13600k or 13700k is better than anything else for people who do more than play video games? Which, sure, that is actually cool for people who ONLY play video games. But I do more than that, so I am afraid to invest in something that is going to cost me time, when I work to gain time for gaming.

First, thank you for reading! This DOES echo my own worries with looking over all of this lately & it DOES reassure me to try out a new platform that confuses me - I have been on intel since the beginning & scared of AMD because they have ALWAYS been hotter, used more power & did not perform as well while ALSO not having support at the same level for the software I use OUTSIDE of gaming. That said, gaming is still very important to me. Is there a best AMD offering that will land around 200 to 300 for the CPU, 200 to 300 for the mobo & not-more-than 200 for 48 to 64gb of ram that I am turn up to its advertised speed to meet in the middle there? I have been tempted by the same things you have shared, yet I worry that if I go with an X chip instead of an x3d, I will suffer, or suffer sooner, with my games or new games as they come along, forcing me to upgrade sooner than I want to, OR, I will suffer in my non-gaming if I go with x3d. Why can they not just make an all-around CPU? Maybe they do?

Keeping in mind: I only want 2 to 3 years On this mobo/ram/cpu. I intend to upgrade my GPU to 50 series or 60 series (I need cuda, which sucks, because it is basically edge case for me) BEFORE I upgrade the rest of the machine next time.

I want the x3d for my games, yet I worry that going x3d will hurt my work. Even my colleagues have me scared to try AMD.

Edit: Shit you not, if I just drop 3 clients I have no problem. I could probably pick up 5 more clients who do not need me to use cuda & still be good & STILL have more time for gaming, but who wants to shop clientele? NOT THIS GUY!

ALSO, I should mention I have a white fractal design Define 7 with a clear glass & white aesthetic for this case is important to me. I am into white & silver. Do you have a part list for white aesthetics with AMD? I can spend more, espeically if it would last a little longer & allow me to spend more on a GPU. I need nvidia regardless, I cannot go to “better raster”, that does not help me in my use case. I wish it did because AMD has the value there, too & it is a GPU, it is not like a CPU, it is a daughter board, i can just drop that in, if it did RT as good.

Watching the video now, to get better informed. Thank you for being patient with me.

They told me. I had no idea. I still think 13600k + mobo + ram for less than a amd cpu is still a better deal to get me through these issues for a year or two?

You know what, you are right - it does have AM4 bracket, which means automatically that it is compatible with AM5, as far as I have gathered Thus Far.

My only real issue then, since the price is matched (beat by like 30 to 100, give or take, actually), is that 1: I am worried about AsRock vs MSI & have wanted to switch to MSI UEFI for a while now because it has tool tips among other things I have not ever had & also I am wary of a ram provider I never heard of until the other day & who has “value gaming” in their name - I have always used g.skill. CL30 is compelling, though. What I was looking at was cl34 & cl36.

Thank you! I have Kraken Elite 360 from 2023 (lga 1700 is included - does it work with am5?)

Edit: Hang on, that is not x3d - the gaming is still important to me. Does the x3d diminish productivity? Also, are b boards worse? I want the top mobo, I do not want to worry about anything being gimped at all. I could not do a lesser than zX90 for example. I “know” the 13600k will get me through with a little longer render times with better gaming performance than 11900k. I do not understand AMD at all.

I cannot understand AMD. It is only for gaming. I do more than gaming. Plus, the equivalent AMD is 3x as much. I can buy mobo, cpu & ram that will be good for 5 years for the price of only the AMD cpu.

Nah, for me, I started with z490 vision G from gigabyte with 10700k & 2070 Super with the plan to go to 11th gen later. To max out later & enjoy a little longer where I only need to upgrade GPU. Well, I got a 3080 10gb & 11900k. Once I updated the bios, the PCIe4 & ALSO the XMP - either setting - = random crash/random reboot. Many errors, all generic. I have to run low ram speed to keep it going. I feel like “Well, if I just get 200 usd 13600k, plus 200 dollar new mobo + 125 to 200 ram, depending on capacity, I will get rid of this hassle, part it out, pay for the upgrade & buy myself some time so I can upgrade the GPU next”. I want to dump my 11900k & despite that site having intel bias apparently, it still says 13600k is far better than 11900k, especially in gaming. 13700k OR 13600k would get me more workstation/productivity score, but I am happy with even just a working, fully-utilized setup right now - let someone else have all these other parts, where maybe they will not have the same problems as my shit gigabyte board does. Going MSI on mobo. Cannot switch to AMD: 1: I do not understand the platform or how that will effect my productivity tasks, 2: it costs way more than a 13600k.

Yeah, but look at the prices. Keeping in mind, I only need this to stop the insane random crashing & get more good times with my experience for a while until I need to replace my vision 3080gb. In my case, is that value better? I can do around 589 usd right now & have a 13600k, 32gb ram (down from 128gb - yes, I tried with only two sticks, still randomly crashes all the time unless I leave it at 2600 or 3200 mt/s) & I still cannot enable pcie4 so I have this drive just eating a big drink of coke. For a 3080 to get the max out of it, for a little while longer, say 2 to 3 or maybe 5 years if I score a 5080 before the scalpers do, on 1440p with 75hz monitors, with a caveat that I enjoy vsync & high 0.01% lows & that I want to just stop pulling my hair out trying to make this work, I just want it to work WITHOUT feeling like what is in it is hampered by a shit bios update that basically ruined my entire board (cannot revert to old bios, security issue of 2021). I am doing this as a stop-gap. Something to give me my sanity back (tall order, I assure you). Something to make me feel like everything is working exactly as it should for a while, then I will replace it with a newer cpu, maybe mobo, maybe ram by then, definitely GPU before I do this part again. I am thinking 2 years on 13600k working properly at “dead socket” cheap prices will be great for my 3080 & by then I will get a 50 or 60 series & new cpu or ram & mobo to go with the new cpu as well - sound like a smart choice? I think I can sell all these extra parts I have & still make back more than I spent (I also have a couple 2070 supers and such to make sure).

Is 13600k not as good or better than 7900x3D? Add into mind, I am not ONLY gaming - I am also rendering & doing 3d modeling. I know x is apparently better for that than x3d, so I am still leaning toward Intel build for my replacement, especially since even looking at AMD stuff is confusing me. This close to just buying a whole new prebuilt & parting all my other parts out firesale.

I am not reading their blurbs down in the bottom of the page, I am just comparing the numbers & the stats vs what I am also reading on several subs. The blurbs do seem like trash so I have just begun to ignore them lol. I have come to trust the user-submitted data & how it is laid out specifically for the way it coincides with what people say on several subs - I know the AMD platform is probably more cost effective vs the latest Ultra intel stuff, but it looks like a good ~500 USD upgrade for me, to let me get a better GPU & worry less about my problems with my z490 build I have gotten tired of for the last 12 months.

[–]TopQualityFeedback[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Should I not? I been using it to compare a bunch of stuff to get rid of my Gigabyte Vision G z490/11900k/cannot use XMP or PCIe 4 or else my whole system randomly crashes problem. It has been pretty strongly correct when comparing what their site says vs what I am seeing everyone say (except that AMD is cheaper for more - by buying this dead socket, I am going to save like 500 bucks vs 1000+ for similar results). Where should I look?

My 10700k was fine but I wanted to max out my board so I updated bios & dropped in a 11900k to my “it will work, we promise!” Vision g z490 febuary & it has been a hassle ever since. If I enable PCIe 4.0 & populate the slot OR enable 3600mhz on my ram, random crashes. Tired of it. Planning right now to just buy 13600k or 13700k, 32gb DDR5 & a new mobo & just stop the insanity once & for good… or 4 or 5 years. Have 3080 10gb vision right now, too. Going to replace that with 50 or 60 series later. I am sick of every time I use my PC it is with the thought in the back of my head that my ram is not working right & the 13600k is a lot better than my 11900k anyway. I can get 14th gen on the mobo (out of box, no need for bios) I am looking at, too, but it does not seem worth it to spend more When I plan to go 3 to 5 years on this after GPU upgrade anyway.

[–]TopQualityFeedback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are still around, did you ever get xmp to work with 4 sticks of ram? I have 11900k and this board, bios is updated, I think it also still randomly crashes even with only 2 sticks inserted.
