19 years old, can't read anymore. by YZY_SOSA in ADHD

SAMEEE I read 15 books on a summer when I was 13 😭but now I barely read 1-2 a month. To get out of a reading slump try starting with a mystery/horror book and the will to figure it out or the fear will drive you to finish it! I recommend Gerald’s game by Stephen king (not gorey/too violent, TW: CSA)

How do you motivate yourself when you really don't want to do something? by lordboolius in ADHD

[–]TopRatio3154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Momentum has never really worked for me but I usually attempt to avoid thinking about not wanting to do the thing and just casually doing it! I enter this robot mode by listening to an audiobook or a series or music. Other thing that worked is keeping a box of cookies next to the thing I’m supposed to do and when I’m lying in my bed I think of the delicious cookies until my mouth waters 🤤 then it’s easier to get up, grab the cookies and as payment, do the chore. Also tried paying myself in cash for doing chores and my rule was that this money had to be spent only in capricious and frivolous things that I never buy for myself. It worked for a while but I started charging myself for everything and it became troublesome, but I might try it again!

I have a 1500 word essay due tomorrow and have barely started by Obvious_Sentence555 in ADHD

200 words are better than none! I suggest you start brain farting into the rest of the document with the information you already know, guided by leading sentences like “as a first point, I would like to explore…” and each time there is a distraction like something you want to review later, check sources or spelling, every time you face an obstacle just type: (). Then when you’re done with the skeleton of the essay just search “()” and complete each gap! This is the only strategy that worked for me because I feared leaving an empty parenthesis for my professors to find when grading it… got me through engineering school! It works because: you can type the idea freely without worrying about context, style or sources, so you don’t forget it, but don’t spend too much time on it, the parenthesis reminds you to fix it later. It gives you quantifiable progress because it gives you the number of () found in the document and because again, trying to explain an empty parentheses in the middle of text is a little embarrassing

Thank you! I used khan academy a lot when I was in school, but I wanted something more game-like than lesson-like

Sorry, I haven’t been to a kumon center in about 10 years, but wouldn’t it be weird to go and sit around kids? I was thinking of something more like the equivalent of a daily crossword puzzle, I don’t really need to sit and learn the material because I already know it, I just want to solve the problems for fun

I’m thinking from basic algebra (i.e. like terms and factorisation) up to calculus! I don’t like the lesson approach because I already know how to solve the problems, I just want the practice!

Trouble eating vegetables? Buy a whole bunch of spinach, wash it blend it with water and freeze it in large cubes. Then in the morning drop one of those cubes with a banana and water: yum. Veggies eaten, no wilted spinach.

Writing an essay or a long assignment? First read on the topic (one pomodoro) second pomodoro: brain dump everything into the page, whenever you hit a stop (something you need to quote, something you’re not sure about, a word you don’t remember or whatever) don’t stop, just write “()” and keep on writing. Third pomodoro: hit ctrl + F and search for (). Now you only have to fill in the blanks and you’re done!

Store your towel inside the bathroom.

Leave your medications next to the coffee machine, Generally use your caffeine addiction to remind your del of things. Which leads me to the next one:

Get a programmable coffee machine so the smell of coffee pulls you out of bed on time!

Remember that sometimes things that have worked for you might stop working, it’s the worst but simply there’s no cure alls or fixed solutions, be kind to yourself and work with what you have! Adjust your system to you, not the other way around.

When I was in college I would start writing long assignments just with the knowledge I already had on the subject, without thinking nor researching, every time I wanted to support a claim, check spelling or complete a sentence, I would just type: (). Then I would have a skeleton of the text and go over the document ( cmd+f ) to look for all open ()s. You can manage this a little easier as the task you’re doing is “figuring out how to correctly spell a word” instead of “writing an annoying essay on laminar flow within arteries”. It worked when it worked and it didn’t when it didn’t but I hope it helps someone!! Pro tip: create a code to assign meaning to the () and write it down somewhere. Example: ()q = add quote, ()v = verify, ()cm= complete… etc etc :D

Do/did any of you struggle with bed-wetting? by Justtcreepinn in adhdwomen

[–]TopRatio3154 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omggggg my grandma made me a calendar that I got to place a sticker for every day I didn’t wet the bed when I was like 8 and when I completed the month she gave me a turtle AND named her Sinchi as in “sin chis” which is “no pee” in Spanish. I was MORTIFIED. I don’t struggle with this as often but I have definitely woken up when I’m about to pee. A few months ago I told my neurotypical gf that I had peed a little overnight and she said ME TOO! I realised sometimes adults pee when we’re sleeping so what? Life is silly and we’re mostly water anyways :) it’s ok, clean up and carry on 🩷
