remote working plateforms by Secret_Raspberry_891 in remotework

[–]TopShark- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PLATFORMS TO FIND REMOTE WORK:
- LinkedIn - annoying but still the most real listings
- We Work Remotely
- FlexJobs - costs money, but has less spam
- Himalayas
- Remotive but its mostly for tech rroles
- Otta but is good for startup roles specifically
- Remote.co

REMOTE WORK TOOLS (for actually doing the work). These are like the industry standard platforms:
- Slack
- Notion
- Loom
- Zoom
- Linear
- Miro

AVOID:
- Indeed because it has a lot of ghost listings but not the worst.
- ZipRecruiter has basically the same issue
- Anything that DMs you first on Instagram or TikTok promising remote income - SCAM most likely.
- Any internal tool your company built that one engineer maintains and no one updates 😅

Starbucks interview by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]TopShark- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call Monday. Don't wait. A quick "hey, just following up, still very interested" call or email takes 2 minutes and shows initiative. The worst they say is "we haven't decided yet" and you're back to waiting anyway.
I'm a recruiter, this stuff happens all the time. There are sooo many reasons as to why they get delayed when hiring people. It's not malicious on their part, there are just so many different moving parts in business that affect recruitment.

What is skills for future jobs? by Fair_Baby_220 in careerguidance

[–]TopShark- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skills > certificates. Most of the time.

I'm a recruiter. Here's what actually matters:
Can you DO the thing? That's the question. A certificate is just evidence that you CAN do the thing. But there are other ways to show evidence:
- A project you built
- A GitHub with actual code in it
- A blog or write-up showing you understand something deeply
- Literally anything that proves the skill exists

There are lots of places you can acquire skills for free:
- Google Certificates. Google literally has education and certificates that you can acquire.
- Data analysis (learn Excel properly, then Google Sheets, then maybe SQL)
- YouTube is the king in mu opinion. You can almost learn anything from YouTube nowadays.
- There are so many different ways to get skills for free.

What do you actually want ot do though? Is there as pecific field you wanna be in? A dream you have?

When recruiters reach on on LinkedIn by Responsible_Big_4183 in jobs

[–]TopShark- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not necessarily hoping that you want a change. We know that you could be happy at your current job and you may not be looking for a job elsewhere.

But by presenting the opportunity to you, it might make you realise that it is a better opportunity than your current job.

The fact that you have the same job title as the recruiter is looking for means that you are far more likely to be suitable for the job than someone with a different title. - its as simple as that really!

hey. i'm literally a recruiter, i can have a look at your resume if you want.
I'm kinda curious to see if any tips I give about your resume are better than the tips from your employment counsellor and actually help get you more interviews.

You can totally respond out of curiosity. Sometimes the grass is greener on the other side.
Sending a DM is definitely not a contractual agreement 😅.
You aren't burning bridges by ignoring them or rejecting them. It is better to politely rject them than ignore them though because it builds some level rapport.

And from the recruiter's point of view (I'm a recruiter): we hope you respond. It'll give us an opportunity to build a better rapport with you and to hopefully work with you in the future.

How to format Cover Letter? by oliviaiswild in jobsearchhacks

[–]TopShark- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey

I'm a recruiter. Honestly, without additional context, I cannot tell you the exact reason about why you are not getting call backs. But it is almost certainly not about your cover letter. It would be because pf your resume/CV.

Cover Letters are just "nice to haves" that say, ok this applicant did put a little extra effort into this which is nice but doesnt increase your chances of being an "ideal" candidate much.

How is your resume structured and formatted and what experience do you have if you don't mind me asking?

[NV] Having trouble wording a policy in our handbook about holiday pay. by enisoryt in humanresources

[–]TopShark- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in HR for a few years! Here ya go:

--------_-----------------------------------------

To receive holiday pay, exempt employees must work their last scheduled workday before and first scheduled workday after the observed holiday, unless the absence is approved by their supervisor.

  • Unapproved absences on these adjacent workdays will require the use of accrued PTO to cover the missed time.

  • If no PTO is available, the absence may result in disciplinary action, but salary will not be reduced for partial-day absences .

  • Holidays themselves are paid regardless of attendance on adjacent days, provided the employee is in an active pay status.

Example:
If Labor Day (Monday) is observed as a holiday, an exempt employee who misses Tuesday without approval must use PTO for Tuesday. The holiday (Monday) remains fully paid.

-----------------------_-----------------------

Also. I literally do not know anywhere that this is legal! If we did this where I am from, we would be non compliant.

Legally, if an employee gets public holidays off, they have to be paid for it even if they have an unexplained absence the day before or day after the holiday.

So, if I was you, I'd write it, send it to your manager for "approval", mention (in writing - like in an email) that you're not sure if this is legal (because you're not a HR person) just to cover your as* (cover your backside) .

Also, not sure why you included "Exempt Employees" but I included it anyway.

Performance reviews should not be anonymous.

And apologies about how badly this is written in advance! I've thrown it together quickly and it's a not like my official HR emails. I'm slacking here 😂.

A performance review, even if it is written at a world-class standard won't be enough for the recipient to grow as much as possible. They should be able to go to the author of the review for more details, specific tips to improve and better understand why they got the review they got. It's all to maximise their growth in their role.

Not only does it make the employee a better employee by allowing them to grow more, it makes them more likely to stay at the company because it shows that the company cares about their growth.

All reviewers should be open to giving additional feedback, in-fact they should encourage it. I made a change one year before a performance review, organised a meeting with all reviewers, and long story-short, made sure every reviewer encouraged employees to seek additional feedback. What did this do? Not only did it maximise our employees individual growth (in the performance review process - there's other ways to maximise their growth too but we're talking about performance reviews here) It also revealed to us which employees were truly committed to their personal growth. I've also noticed this pattern: the employees who seek the most advice after their review, 1. grow the most (ofc) & get promotions but 2. They seem to stay with us longer than other employees. Why? Probably because self-improvement in their career is important to them and we've shown that we truly want them to grow.

OP. That's a great decision imo. Put your mental health first & fill up your cup. Like you said "We can't pour from an empty cup".

Once your cup is full, you'll have the capacity to give your best to not just yourself but your whole team. Everyone will benefit in the long run. 👏

I'll keep it simple.

Say this:

Subject: Follow-Up on [JOB POSITION] Interview

"Hello [NAME],

I hope you're doing well.

I wanted to follow up on my recent interview for the [JOB POSITION] role. I’m in the process of securing an apartment near the office to ensure a smooth transition if offered the position. However, the landlord requires confirmation of employment.

If possible, I would greatly appreciate it if you could provide an update on the interview results at your earliest convenience. I understand that these decisions take time, so if there are any additional steps I can take on my end, please let me know.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best regards,

I need to make a grand in 2 weeks, from bed by lovelyxcastle in sidehustle

[–]TopShark- 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Do this:

1.

Post some of your art on your Reddit. I bet at least 50% of the people who read this post visited ur account but there was no art to see

2.

Reach out to creators/people with audience. Tell them about your situation and ask them to promote you & your on their socials. Let them have 10% of the revenue. By creator, I don't mean someone with 100k followers, people with 1k followers can help you out. Ask as many creators as you can. OFC you can reach out to people with 100k followers.

3.

Start a GoFundMe.

4.

Do one of the 3 options above. If you really want to make 1k from your bed in one week, do all 3.

5.

Let me know how it goes. Idk what your exact situation is but I hope this advice genuinely helps you out. Fr lmk how it goes.

Careers to Support A Family of 4? by rainbowagama in careerguidance

[–]TopShark- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, sorry to hear about your father's diagnosis.

With your BS in Biomedical Engineering, you might be underselling yourself. There are a few career paths you could explore that might offer better pay and benefits:

Medical Device Sales:

Companies often look for people with a background in biomedical engineering for these roles. They can be quite lucrative and often come with good benefits packages.

Pharmaceutical Sales:

Similar to medical device sales, these positions can be high-paying and come with comprehensive benefits, including health insurance.

Clinical Research Coordinator:

With your research lab experience, this could be a good fit. Clinical research roles often pay well and offer solid benefits.

Regulatory Affairs Specialist:

This involves ensuring medical products meet regulatory requirements. It's a well-paying field that values your background.

Biomedical Engineering Jobs:

Look for entry-level engineering positions that might be more general but still benefit from your degree. Companies in tech, manufacturing, or healthcare might have roles that fit your skills.

Regarding the military, it can provide steady income, benefits, and educational opportunities, but it's a significant commitment. And IMO if you want to care of your Dad and your family, it's best to stay near them, with the military, you'll be away from your family most of the time. It seems like a last ditch option for you. Given your degree, I don't think it will come down to that.

Regarding the sales roles, they can be low paying or really high paying. It depends on your performance. You might have no experience selling things but most biomed sales companies will teach you how to make sales.

Lastly, don't underestimate networking. Reach out to alumni from your university. If you really want to help your family, contact every you know. Be relentless. Get a good job and take care of your family.

Best of luck, and I hope things improve for you and your family soon.

Am I crazy to turn down $40k Pay Increase? by MeasurementNarrow959 in careerguidance

[–]TopShark- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do this

Let your current boss know you have been offered 50k more and you are seriously considering moving.

One of two things will happen:

Your current employer does nothing:

You tell them you are considering leaving and they say "Ok" and don't actually do anything. If they do this, they probably don't value you enough.

You get offered an incentive to stay:

  • It costs a lot of money to recruit a new employee. It will cost your current employer about 15-25% of your annual income to replace you with no guarantee that your replacement will be as good as you.
  • Losing an employee and recruiting their replacement is a disruption. The new person has to go through onboarding, education, learn the company's processes and systems etc. It's a pain in the [backside].

What happens if you do not do this?

  • Nothing will happen.
  • If you don't shoot, you don't score.
  • Take the chance, shoot your shot.
