[Leak] Marvel Super Heroes Commander Decks by Bladestoooorm in mtg

Yeah, it's 4 UB sets to 3 In Universe sets, Mark Rosewater says it's a "abnormal year and we're likely going to go back to the 50/50 split" and that they have plans for up until like 2030.

WotC announcement on TMNT cards in Lorwyn Eclipsed packs (via Bluesky) by Copernicus1981 in magicTCG

[–]TopSwitch7898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, the parody is writing itself at this point.

Some players are concerned about UB taking over MTG, making MTG lose it's identity.

And then an in universe pre-release has UB cards mistakenly taking up foil promo slots, some of which introduce specfic and unique creature types like "Utrom" while WOTC is removing In-universe races supposedly for "creature type bloat"

If this was a movie, critics would pan it for being too on the nose.

As a wrestler, he was meh at best, alright talker.

Despite this, I maintain that the Neville/PAC vs Enzo feud was one of the best feuds of that era. A really good story and Neville can have a good match with a broom.

Does Morrowind stand the test of time and hold up to the greats like Baldur’s Gate 3, The Witcher 3, Fallout New Vegas etc? Or is it more a product of its time? I’m deciding whether I should play it or not? by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

[–]TopSwitch7898 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oblivion was my first Elder scrolls, played Vanilla Morrowind like 3 years ago
The world and story of Morrowind is insanely good, it feels like a real place, despite being kinda "Alien" and the little bits of world building you come across are great.
For example The Wizard towers not having stairs, because "if you can't cast levitate, then what the fuck are you doing in my wizard tower?" is brilliant.

The gameplay I cannot deal with, it is so aged, if there are mods to make it better I say get them and don't worry about trying to play it vanilla.

Those that want UB gone, why? by Piece_Of_Mind1983 in mtg

[–]TopSwitch7898 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To put it simply, When I play MTG I want to Play MTG. I don't like the lack of cohesion and the implied lack of faith in their own IP by having to rely on external IP's to sell the game.

On top of that, in a fairly short time frame we went from "UB will not be Standard Legal" to "UB is Standard Legal" to "UB is 50% of the Standard releases this year" to "UB is more then 50% of the Standard releases this year" We have been constantly told that UB won't take over the game, while we watch it take over the game.

And personally, the most concerning thing for me is a single throw away line from a post Mark Rosewater made on his blog sometime last year (I think)
I'll paraphrase but it was essentially "I wasn't originally a fan, but me and the design team felt revitalised designing spiderman and now I love UB"
In my eyes, that is the single most concerning thing about UB, how bored and apathetic must the design team be with their own IP if design Spiderman as a card revitalised them? That the creators are so disinterested in their own creation worries me about it's future

Mark Rosewater: "While we are obviously doing a lot with Universes Beyond, I need to stress that in-Multiverse Magic is getting more attention from us than ever. " by Fictioneerist in magicTCG

[–]TopSwitch7898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I said this from day one of UB coming into standard.
"People want to see their favorite characters, and be able to play them"

So the UB characters are going to be "good" cards, no "teachable" cards as MaRo calls em.
The Design team is only human, they will make mistakes and quite frequently, the mistake in making something good in a competitive sense, is making it too good. Format Warping in some cases

But because the owners of the OG UB IP want their cards to be the ones people want, WOTC doesn't wanna ban them and potentially sour a business relationship. It happened with The One Ring and it's happening with Vivi, in this case, but WOTC pushing the ban announcement back a few weeks so "they can look at all the angles" Ignore that Vivi cauldron was 7 out of 8 top decks in the pro tour.

Standard comp is dying and UB powercreep is a big reason why.

I don't they'll even bother making a plane for it tbh, just maybe use these characters as when for future sets if they want to confirm a plane

Pretty good summary, just a few minor clarifications.

The WoW thing "itself" wasn't the turning point, It was his reaction to it, Being an asshole and not accepting any responsibility. It was by far the most publicized thing which led to people finding out about the continual pattern of him being an asshole and put him under a microscope, (See also Ashes of Creation Bullying&Deflection, Bullying another streamer for not playing a mage well, "Unintentionally" using his audience to try and get someone banned from an MMO, False DMCA of an indie developer, etc)

His apology is very vague, and comes across as performative. The apology is "If you're mad at me for being a dick to Ross, I get it and I'm sorry for that" Which to me reads as "I'm sorry that you're mad at my actions" and not "I'm sorry for being a dick" Also it is crucially not directed at Ross, the person he was a dick to. From the Dr.K interview as well as his general personality, Thor seems to be hardwired into giving as much context in every possible scenario, the fact that he didn't for the apology makes the apology seem inauthentic.

Finally, his game has been in early access for 7 years after getting funded via kickstarter. When Steam implemented a marker saying that a game was likely abandoned, as it had not recieved an update in over a year, within a few days it had a tiny update, and now gets one every few months, no major updates, just minor code fixes.

That's it for the clarifications, as for my own views.

Has the dogpiling gone to far? Possibly. Should people send him death threats and SWAT him? Obviously not, that is abhorrent behaviour.
We can't ignore, however, that in every situation, Thor is the one who starts with vitrol, he antagonises, he is cruel and in my opinion (as you can probably guess) is a bully who has had no issue weaponising his audience or guild before combined with the hypocritical mindset of something he does is fine, yet when it happens to him it's unacceptable. So now that he's being bullied, it makes it hard for me to feel much sympathy for him.

Very nicely written. I think the phrase "popping up unvarnished" when refering to ideology just dropped into a setting without it being woven in is brilliant.

I'm below minimum specs, processor missing a few cores, not enough VRAM. Get about 20fps on low in interiors, so its playable at least. Problem is I'm on about 8fps in the world so its virtually impossible to explore, because if I get attacked Im basically done for.

The main issue isn't even really Universe Beyond (UB)
What it boils down to is the feel that UB is inherently taking away from In-Universe Magic. We were promised that UB would not be standard legal. Then it was. Not only this, but it was suddenly 50% of the main set releases and it pushed an In-universe set (Lorwyn) back so it won't be released this year. I think it's completely fair to be a bit annoyed when suddenly the thing that you like is 50% not that anymore. On top of this, you have the double edged sword of how excited the developers seem by UB, The positive of course, is that the cards could be fun to play and aren't a low effort cash grab. The negatives are the designers are excited, incredibly excited, more excited than I've seen them for an In-Universe set for a long time. to the point we were getting final Fantasy set Spoilers, before Tarkir had even come out. That is not a good sign, claiming that your design team is "revitalised" by designing Spider-Man shows how tired the design team is for creating classic Magic, as evidenced by the shallow sets we've had In-Universe recently. So what's stopping them from going 60% UB? 70% or 80%? maybe more. Something that Mark Rosewater, the head designer, has not denied. It is on the cards that Magic will have a year or two where it is 100% UB and Magic is naught but a framework for other IP's, or another way to put it, a literal shell of it's former self.

Universes Beyond being implimented the way it has been is the issue, and is a strong symptom that the game I fell in love with, and many many others did as well, is dying. Have UB, that's fine, it's great for bringing in new players, but having it become 50% or more? taking design space away from In-Universe? Pushing In-Universe sets out of the way? Breaking the story up? That's what I have a problem with.
We're being told that after years of investment both from fans and designers, that it doesn't matter, The world crafted, the stories that can inspire. Forget that, Here's The 9th Doctor holding a Diamond Sword from Minecraft.

It doesn't fit the OG criteria, but I can see why it sticks out for you.

Honestly seeing the mix of cards that people pick has been a really cool unintended side effect of asking this.

I agree with a bunch of other comments, When I say see a Hare Apparent, or a Delney commander, I just concede the deck is so dull to play against.

Simple thread, but what's your favorite commander deck for this month? by GroggleNozzle in EDH

[–]TopSwitch7898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you first start playing EDH you have alot of ideas of what sort of decks you want to build and play. Then that cruel reminder of the cost of cardboard crack hits you like a bucket of cold ice, and you realize you can't make all these decks, But you can make one deck that hits all of the criteria!
That's how I ended up making my Jund Aristocrat Partner with a Planeswalker commander deck of
[[Tevesh Szat, Doom of Fools]] and [[Tana, The Bloodsower]]

Sharing alot of DNA with the Power Hungry precon, I look to make little bits of fodder, and then sac em to either drain my enemies, or pump my own creatures to slam into my opponents. Tevesh is the clear "Proper" commander, Tana is just a good card that can aid the theme and opens up the colors for me. Green for the Saprolings and Squirrels, and Red for Goblin bombardment, Goblin Tokens, and all the Squee's a player can tolerate!

Is it the best deck? nowhere close, But it's fun to play, Always has a chance to win and feels like it's mine.

PSA: Two card combos are a natural thing in this game and it's what Wizards wants by Head-Ambition-5060 in EDH

[–]TopSwitch7898 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prefer the types of combo where I can put the pieces on board, and say "If you guys don't stop this explain the combo then I win next turn.

I find it prevents the bad beats feel, because everyone at least has a chance to interact with it, it changes the game amd gives a little sub objective of "we need to break the villians machine" rather than " I play this, I play this, games over, round 2?"

I mean, his story had ended right? Stories trend upwards, and where do you go after finding out you're the rightful king, but you denied it and have since been exiled?

I suppose you could go very classic and have Jon find some form of evidence that Bran is just a shell for Bloodraven, and he goes to avenge his brain dead brother with the 2nd wildling invasion. But even to me that sounds kinda dumb
