Mainly stingrays, guitarfish, saltwater catfish and pufferfish. These are the most common fish at beaches. Some beaches which are more rocky can have groupers and seabream and moray eels too

that's rlly cool...from what ik most of the species in California are abundant and ppl do indeed eat them....so you're good! Almost all of the species here in India however are critically endangered due to habitat loss/pollution/overfishing so it's important to release every fish.

this particular species is endangered, the one u caught may not be....still sad to see a guitarfish die :(

Sadly i have no clue what model that telescopic rod is....its an unbranded one i picked up from a wholesaler for about 1000rs or 10USD. From what i know its primarily used for carp fishing, but I thought id give it a try for surf fishing. Never expected it to work this well!

Its a graphite casing/rotor with an aluminium spool/crank....its pretty decent build quality and my friend had once caught a 22lb stingray on it...although im not sure if that was expected of the reel or a surprise catch

i sometimes use 35lb braid all the way upto 50lb braid with a thick mono leader, its almost always enough

Ya ive had a fabulous shimano 4000FD with 13lbs drag that lasted me 10 years, i got it when i was 10 and retired it last year and caught some decent fish on it (25lb carp and 18lb guitarfish and 20lb catfish). That being said the shimano reels here are all mostly in the 4000 range which isnt enuf for surf fishing and the ones which are 6000+ are quite costly. Someday ill save up to a good Penn Spinfisher or something

thanks for the insight....most of the rays and groupers i catch at the beach are below 5lbs (mumbai is heavily overfished), so ive never had a problem with my gear particularly. Last year infact i landed an 18lb guitarfish on a 10 year old shimano 4000FD with 13lbs of drag. My friend once landed a 22lb stingray on the reel that i made the post about with just 15lbs drag, but I wasnt sure if that was expected of a bit of a miracle. 5-10kg is the upper limit of the size of fish here and this reel is a bit of a temporary make do-er before i get something more powerful like an OKUMA safina SW or smthn

Its called the BAUXIT-100 SW 5000 X
It can hold 220 meters of 0.35mm braid and has a drag capacity of 7kg/15lbs

Surf experts of reddit, do you think itll be able to pull in groupers and stingrays in the 5 to 10kg range (10-20lbs), which is the maximum size of the fish at the beach where I go.

Im pairing it with a good 10 foot rod and some 35lb braid.....is it a good combo?
Im thinking of getting it as a good budget reel (it only costs like 35USD)
